Is there a way to join a server as a spectator?

For example, If there is a co-op going on and I want to join just to watch the people, is there a way to join as a spectator, without first becoming a player and then taking a break?

Afraid not. I think thats there to avoid unneccesary lag for the people actualy playing. Also to avoid the Heckling from the bystanders.

Also, why would you want to? I'd rather be dismembering zombies than watching other people have all the fun.

It was more so that if a 4 player slot game is full, I can watch my friends play while I wait. But I guess I am used to CS where I can join, but not pick a side
