Yes, if you downloaded it, steam will most likely fuck it up in the process and you'll have to delete everything and reinstall steam. That goes for any steam game really.

Maybe for you but so far every one I have downloaded has worked flawlessly

just finished instaling my l4d steam download. everything works perfectly :)
