I have the same problem both in single player and multiplayer. The game runs smooth 70% of the time even in graphically intensive areas. But sometimes when I do something like turn around really quick it freezes up, stalling the display and audio for about 10 seconds. After sitting there frozen it catches up and then it's back to normal, soon to happen again after a few minutes.

I have no other programs running in the background besides Steam.

My computer's specs in case you are wondering:

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ 2.7 GHz
2.00 GB of RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS

I also have Verizon FIOS High Speed Internet.

You just get the game? Sometimes sounds load slowly, because they aren't cached. Yet.

Updated everything, defragged, antivired... I dunno what else to say.

Nope. I got it soon after it came out. I'm pretty sure I have heard all of the audio at some point. I didn't have this problem at first. It just started happening a couple weeks ago.

When you say updated, do you mean there are patches out for the game?
If so, where can I get them?

Edit: And it also only seems to happen on L4D and no other game.

lol, they download automatically, I mean your 8600 gts drivers.

Oh lol...
I'll have to check those and I'll let you know.
But if the drivers are out of date, why would it only be happening on L4D?

I'm just trying to cover all the bases, troubleshooting requires everything to be in order, before you know that you got a serious and annoying problem, like freezing while turning.

A recurring problem... finally, it's all starting to become clear.

Well it looks like I did need a driver update but after installing it, the same problem is happening.

Turn off Multi Core Rendering in the video options that will fix your problem it is well documented or go download the latest Nvidia Drivers that came out march 3rd that will also fix your problem.
