View Full Version : Intel or AMD? the Great Debate

Now I know some of you guys may have heated words about this subject, but keep it to a minimum.
The reason I am bringing this up is because I can buy a 2.3 black edition quad core from AMD for 100 bucks ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 2E16819103244 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103244) ), and I can easily overclock that since it is a black edition.
But for the same 100 I can buy a Intel Dual Core 2.4 Ghz CPU ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 2E16819115032 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115032) ).
Now I have a limited budget, and I cannot get a CPU over 130, so those are the limit for me.
So Left 4 Dead 411'ers, which is better and why?
Also please no fan boy'ism, real facts, links would be nice.

I have AMD, but only because it's been more cost effective for me, if I had more, I'd go with Intel.
Intel has faster raw processing speeds, and is tested to be faster even at the same clocks. I can't remember what link that was...

I say the amd only because thats a E4600.....now if it were e8400 or e8500 different story
I made the decision of going quad with a q6600 still an amd fanboy LOL!
+AMD has cooler cpu stickers!

Intel's CPUs have always been better over clockers by far and they do have the best stuff right now and for the forseeable year or 2

I know that is true, but I only have around 130 to spend on a CPU, money it tight right now... And that $100 quad core looks really good right now... But if you can show me how that dual core can beat this quad, I'll jump on the Intel bandwagon...

Intel for a while... we'll see when AMD catches up.
Quads aren't twice as fast as a core 2 duo. I run a quad (q6600), but only because I multitask like crazy.
The intel e8400 can go toe to to with most phenoms and core two quads.

100 dollar AMD quad? I'm pretty sure they suck, I don't remember.
I have a AMD X2 5600+, the last in the line of the energy efficient 65w, at least for what they have in dual right now... 6000+ meh, 120w for 100 mhz???

decided on buying the
Intel Pentium E5400 Wolfdale 2.7GHz 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor

95 bucks, but the reason I am buying it is because I can upgrade to a quad later... And it seems to be good with games, though the quad does better slightly...

Sounds good to me, just make sure on what mobo you're getting, that's what matters. I remember the E8400 is like teh best though, I don't know where I got that from

Intel is the best now because amd had that GPL bug

This was a horrible thread. I came in here getting ready to debate something only to find out the question you are asking it NOT AMD or Intel but which cpu of two should you get.
Massive fail.

I know what you mean! You came here wanting a flame war, but were sadly disappointed and just found someone asking an innocent question! I mean come one people, why cant you all be assholes?
/sarcasm
OT: I use Intel and love it, but my friend uses AMD and it works fine. My vote goes to the AMD because its almost the same frequency and quad core.
Always used AMD and always will.

If you guys want a flame war on processors, fine by me, go create a thread about it, you are free to do so...
It is only up to the mods to decide if it is bad, and if they lock it, then it is locked.

Now, I've seen comparisons of the same frequency of both, and seen that Intel has won, but I do not know why... any explanations?

Wasn't looking for a flame war, but an actual discussion about the topic the topic calls for. Not a discussion about a similar but different topic.

AMD is usually cheaper.

Intel all the way get a e7400 for 100 bucks overlock it to 4ghz with any decent air cooler, its the same core 2 duo as a e8600 with just half the cache and 3mb of lvl 2 cache is fine. As far as AMD goes all there dual cores suck intel blows them away, there quad cores are on par with a intel core 2 duo, I wouldnt waste money on a AMD quad core they are significantly slower then intel and nothing really uses quad core technology yet and wont for some time. My opinion get a e7200 e7300 or e7400, that nice thing about that is the same motherboard that fits those will work on a core 2 quad also so you can upgrade for the future for cheap money since u wont need new ram board or heatsink just a new cpu.
This is an intersting look at the current state of the AMD / Intel question: http://anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=3521
As for which to recommend it depends partly on what you intend to use your computer for?

Intel is the best now because amd had that TGL bug
there i fixed it. hahaha if you know linux you know why its funny i wrote GPL first

AMD failed on me and their customer service abandoned me.
Intel.

If you're getting a Phenom, make sure it's a Phenom 2.
Phenom 1s are not good performers or good overclockers.
Phenom 2 is a *whole* lot better than the buggy phenom1's, if these 2 are your only choices, you can get a much better perforance/cost ratio out of the intel chip. (the bug name is "TLB", and most bios' now have a workaround for the issue, but it still decreases performance)
Wait a couple of months for phenom 2's to show up with AM3 socket compatibility, then get one of those if you can hold off a while. AM3 phenom 2's are AM2 compatible, so you can get a cheap am2 mobo and ddr2, then upgrade to am3/ddr3 later when it's cheap.

Intel have the better up to date cpu's out on the market at the minute.
yet AMD are known to be good overclockers.
AMD are more budget CPU's. If you have a budget you can get a very similar performing pc powered by AMD for more than half the price of an average of an Intel. Yet the new i7 Intel's Quad core are just top of the line. lets see what AMD can bring outa the bag huh

Meh, I think Intel is a little better at overclocking actually.
I got my 5600 from 2.9 just to 3.04 ghz. And it's been confirmed it can't get much higher.
