<div class="quote">Xbox Live user posts message advertising sale of woman's daughter
PUNTA GORDA -- Christa Manos isn't laughing.
Someone posted a message to users of a popular online video game community advertising the sale of her 2-year-old daughter. They even offered free shipping.
Authorities aren't taking the matter lightly either, having launched a criminal investigation.
For Manos, the phony message crossed the line.
"I don't find anything funny about it," said the 23-year-old Punta Gorda woman.
It started Saturday evening with a telephone call.
The person was furious Manos would consider putting a price tag on her child.
At first, it sounded like a prank. But the phone kept ringing, with more and more angry voices from across the United States.
Some just cursed at Manos. Others called her a bad mother. She didn't know what they were talking about.
"By the 18th or 19th call, I knew something wasn't right," Manos said.
According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, the message originated from Xbox Live, where a member posted Manos' number, along with the statement, "selling a child, will pay for shipping."
The online community features thousands of subscribers, all of whom can send messages, download content and play video games with other Xbox 360 users.
"When I saw it, I wanted to hurt someone," Manos said.
And she has a good idea who is responsible, even though the case remains active.
Sheriff's Office spokesman Bob Carpenter said the person could face charges regarding criminal use of information.
