View Full Version : losing connection after safe rooms

I keep losing connection to the server after the door is shut in the safe rooms. It either goes a second or two after that or right after loading the next portion of the level.

I then get the "retrying connection" screen and after the 25 seconds it quits out of the server and back to the main menu - I don't think it's ever succeeded in retrying.

The frequency is variable, it may or may not happen on any given safe room. I guess my chances of finishing a game is about 50%. While it still happens on good servers (e.g. today I had a smooth game with a steady ping of 40-44 and it happened at the end of part 3) I get the feeling it's more likely if the ping starts out poor.

Occasionally it happens at the very beginning of the level, and very occasionally during the game, but not to an extent I'd consider unusual (bad servers etc).

Vista 64
4gb ram
Core 2 E8400 (3ghz stock)
ATI 4850
otherwise reliable 24/1.5mb ADSL2+ connection using Ethernet to router
just using windows firewall

Is the server yours or does this happen on any server?

hmm... I am tempted to blame crappy servers. As if it was your computers fault. I think youd get an error or total crash with no error. Not a time out.

Do you experience this in any other game or while browsing the net or anything?

In your config.cfg locate in the left4dead/cfg/ directory find the variable
cl_timeout "30" and change it to cl_timeout "180" or at least "90" that's the number of seconds it waits to timeout. Some of the servers hang loading files and they will continue on after 30-60 seconds and you'll start up again. Setting your timeout higher gives the server time to get past the hang up. I would suggest that everyone do this but most likely you'll be the only one that will be in the next level when this occurs.

eh... all that seems to me to do is make you wait longer when you get DCed. As if there is a problem. Making him wait longer to DC doesnt seem really useful... But try it. See if it works.

AWESOME!

thanks 4 the reference Viper on how to change the timeout...I always thought 30 was a bit to fast on some servers
