ORLY? I was just curious as to why you're a chemical engineer and why you look down on a philosophy degree. The fact that you answer first with "Money" is the answer there. I'm going to answer your question, but I wanted to figure out your view point first.

Anyway, I'm doing Philosophy and Sociology because they pertain to my interests and I enjoy them. I'm also good at the kind of analytical thinking they demand and am interested in the question they seek to answer and concepts they seek to explore. I want to learn about them to flesh out my world view and be able to back it up with thorough and logical argument. I'd like to write, and a Philosophy degree is a great way to learn to write, and Philosophy and Sociology are good for what I'd like to write about. As for the minors, at my school you NEED a minor, unless you go into an Honours program, and I'd probably choose English Lit to make up for my lack of electives.

Oh, I didn't mean to give that impression. Here and "arts" degree is a selection of any courses that together amount to basically nothing and doesn't necessarily concern the arts or humanities. Sorry if I sounded arrogant.

If I look any way at a philosophy degree, it'd be a suspicious sideways glance like a bartender in the Old West would when a stranger enters.

We have a department here (McGill) called Humanities Studies or something, it's got 2 required classes for minors and 4 for majors; other than that you take mostly whatever you want. It's a major/minor for the Renaissance (Wo)man, basically. I see no problem with it, college isn't vocational school. I think doing things for money is distasteful, anyway.
