Here are the official system requirements:

Minimum:

* Supported OS: Microsoft Windows XP / Vista / Vista64
* Processor: Pentium 4 3.0GHz
* Memory: 1 GB
* Graphics: 128 MB, Shader model 2.0, ATI 9600, NVidia 6600 or better
* Hard Drive: At least 7.5 GB of free space
* Sound Card: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card

Your FX 5500 is below the minum (6600). I doubt it would run the game, even with the latest driver.

Back before I upgraded to my current card (an Nvidia 9600M GT) I was on an Nvidia 5200FX. I was able to play TF2, CSS, HL2 and Portal. The trick is you need to make them go into DirectX 8.1 mode. 6XXX series cards and above default to DirectX 9, so you'd need to use mat_dxlevel 81 in the console to switch the games to that. This will allow you to play every Valve game up until L4D which is DirectX 9 only.

So to answer Gammahey's question, the 5500 GFX cannot handle L4D as the card has very little support for any DirectX 9 technology (no support for the advanced shaders either). It isn't a matter of video drivers either, it's the hardware itself. I'd upgrade to at least a 7XXX series video card to play the game. If you can afford it, go with an 8600 or better. How old is your computer however? If it's more than two years old it may only have a PCI expansion slot. If this is the case you'll need to upgrade the motherboard. The best card for PCI slots is an Nvidia 6200, which is below minimum system requirements. Some company recently ported the Nvidia 8600 to the PCI slot, but it will perform only half as good due to the bottleneck in PCI slots. Might still make L4D playable however.

So basically you're fucked.
