View Full Version : High Speed Internet

I currently have Roadrunner for my internet connection. The only game I'm playing online right now is L4D, although I have played others (Quake, Doom) online in the past. The speed feels OK to me.
My local phone company is offering a deal to hook up to high-speed internet through our phone line. My only concern is the speed of my online gaming.
Does anyone here use a high-speed hook up through a phone modem for playing games like L4D? If so, how does it work? Do you notice any lag? Are there any specs or questions I should be asking about when I speak to the phone company?
Many thanks,
AW

dsl can be really good or really bad depending on your distance from the communications station. this (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/4676) explains it a bit, and this (http://www.dslreports.com/distance) shows the speed and types available based on distance per company. all estimates of course, but reliable.
so, figuring out your distance is the most important, since it'll determine what types and speeds of dsl is available to you and weather or not it'll be better than or competitive with cable internet. also, because of that, any answers you get really aren't relevant, unless they're from your neighbor.

WATEVAR you do, don;t get AT&T. It is really fast, I mean super fast, but it is so unreliable. I had to save this post three times because it crashed three separate times. Thankfully, it doesn't normally screw up in game, just when I'm surfing the nets.

If your stable in game and screwing up web surfing you probably have some sort of trojan or spyware using your browser.
