View Full Version : What locations / areas would you like to see in this game?

More of an ideas thread really.
Kind of a "what buildings / scenarios have to be in any good zombie movie".
I think in a game such as this it would be really cool to feature everyday locations that we go to ourselves.
I would love to see wrecked versions of:
- Hospital (I think is already in the game)
- Shopping Precinct
- Bowling Alley / Cinema (homage to Duke 3D :) )
- Residential / Housing areas / tower blocks.
Any further thoughts?

Use the search button, kthxbye.
Bowling Alley would be cool, with a burnt out nudie bar!

I'd like to see them running through a school hall, which is hosting a lan, dozens of geek infected sat there playing l4d on the screens. If you creep past them, they don't notice you and you can get out without trouble :D
Zoo, Library, Museum, Theatre/Cinema, etc...basicly everything a big city has to offer.

Giant estate with hidden secret corporate facility underneath/
Welll ... I mean, there HAS to be a mall. Somewhere in there. An entire scenario set in a mall would be pretty great. Dawn of the Dead ftw.

My house. Same for the rest of you, you know you want it. I can make maps now, so you can have it too.

They should have umbrella symbols scattered all over the place in that level. Also, make sure Neptune's water-filled lab is included. Zombies coming out of the water to attack you would be awesome.

Nice! He he!
How about an airport? Gotta make it from the basement of an airport hotel, across a stupidly large car park, through the terminals, across the runway and into a hanger where a plane is waiting.
How's dem apples?

A school would be really freaky/fun to play in. Ever played silent hill when all you had was your flashlight in the local school? The word scary is an understatement for that.

I think a school and a mall are must haves. At least in part of a scenario.

How would you guns in the school level? I'm not trying to bash the idea because I like it, but I don't like games where there's no thought to where the guns and items are placed.
I would like a ship type map, where the final stand is when you call for coast guard or something.

And theres regularly M16's and shotguns in an Old Navy. Thats SO much more of a common occurance than having a stash of guns on a boat. Hell, comparing a stash of weapons on a ship, compared to a stash of weapons in a subway, the latter is plain and simply impractical.
Note: It wasn't actually an Old Navy.

I'm assuming you mean the clothing store on a mall level. Some malls have sporting good stores where weapons are sold.

I think a Skycraper level would be cool where maybe the elevators were broken. So you had to use the stairs but some areas were on fire/destroyed so it turns into this big upwards traveling maze or something.
Mall's are kind of overdone but I wouldn't complain if they add one in. Hopefully with barricades an stuff instead of just traveling through it. Could make a good finale area.
Consider, there are gonna be guns all over the damn place. Anytime a cop or a soldier dies and drops his gun, do you think the Infected are gonna pick it up? Seems to me, if there are "safehouses" set up, and carnage to the extent we've seen in recent vids, that the infection has been rampant for at least a few weeks. Which leads me to believe there could (and will) be stashes of firearms pretty much anywhere and everywhere. At least, wherever humans have attempted to barricade and defend themselves ... the mall included. The entire world is a warzone, everyday logic need not apply.

A mountain that's next to a coastline with houses built into the side of the mountain. It's like a complicated cave system with mountain houses you emerge into from the caves, and you fight your way to the beach where a ship is waiting for you, but the ship can only send you a smaller boat since it can't get too close. When you get into the smaller boat, it has a machine gun that you can use to gun down zombies as you speed away to the larger ship.
Next level is on board the ship WHILE IT IS TRAVELING ALONG THE COAST. You can see off the sides of the ship through the windows as you work your way to the bottom. after you come back up you'll be docked at a city... That's where this chapter should end and the first city one getting to the hospital begins.
Also, you can see the sun setting slowly as you get to the ship, and halfway through the ship's travels it turns to night.
That would be so awesome with the moving coastline you see from the ship and the setting sun that you can actually watch setting XD

I'll tell ya, after watching all the L4D gameplay videos a million times now, seeing how intense and spooky it's going to be, and being so excited to finally have a zombie co-op game on the way (and built with Source no less, an engine that excels at gritty, realistic environments, atmosphere, and lighting), and also taking into account the fact that I'm just salivating at all the maps I wanna make for it, the subject of this thread is one I'm spending a lot of quality time daydreaming about lately! Though actually, I've been doing this for years. :)
Anyway, here's some of my dream levels (or locations, as the thread says) for L4D:
1. Abandoned Insane Asylum
A huge, Isolated one ala SESSION 9, on a fiercely stormy night. Picture the mood inside the military estate from the ending of 28 DAYS LATER--all dark, stormy, and shadowy! Place would span acres and have multiple levels and annexed buildings to work through.
2. Sprawling Underground Mine Complex
Ala DAY OF THE DEAD, naturally, and complete with creepy labyrinthian caves (full of zombies) that you'd have to work through, just like in the film.
3. Abandoned Prison
Which others have already mentioned. I agree. That would make a very creepy level to be chased around in by screaming, ravenous, infected hordes! As for place and atmosphere, picture the spooky prison areas in the Nova Prospekt chapter of Half-Life 2. Just put zombies in there and we got it! Gaming bliss man.
4. Huge Metropolitan Airport
Again, already mentioned by others before and I concur. Great possibilities for fun zombie encounters and action here!
5. Abandoned Carnival/Amusement Park
As others have suggested, yes. Only the kind I'm picturing is more like the eerie one near the water in the original CARNIVAL OF SOULS, for anyone who's familiar with that great movie. There'd be areas with decaying rides and all outside, as well as a huge indoor dance hall pavilion. Time would be dusk, on a chilly, gloomy day, with the wind whistling through the entire place. Yes, you gotta work your way through the funhouse, too, as someone else suggested already! :)
Oh, and yeah, zombies are everyfreakinwhere!!!
6. Suburban Neighborhood Settings?
Yep, gotta have that. And while we're at it, why not throw a huge trailer park in the area to fight through as well? Maybe an old drive-in theater, too. Just cool locations to run and gun through.
7. Dark Spooky Woods
OK, you have to have some lonely rural country areas, too, so this one is obvious to everyone already and has been mentioned: gotta have some dark spooky woods to fight through! Picture us running through said woods with mainly our flashlights and gunfire lighting the way, as infected hordes race for us through the wooded hills and valleys under a full moon and junk! I'd dig that. We take refuge and re-supply in cabins or a big lodge we come across, maybe even happen upon some kind of nuclear plant or military base out there in the boondocks, which we escape into (and have to fight inside and throughout, of course).
Think BLAIR WITCH & EVIL DEAD woods look & feel on this one.
Which could lead to...
8. Giant Fog-Shrouded Swamp
Hey, if TRS can put a rural cornfield in the game (which they are), then is a big foggy, swampgas-filled swamp so crazy? :D Hmm. Maybe it is. So what, it's fun to imagine. Heh. But if you just stop and picture this, it could work I think, if handled right. Picture THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK, with zombies.
9. Massive Arctic Outpost
Yeah baby, THE THING... with zombies!!!!
10. Creepy Ghost Town Type Setting
Like Ravenholm in Half-Life 2. Really, just fill that eerie place with the L4D infected crazies and I'd be happy!
11. Slaughterhouse
Huge one with adjoining packing plant, office building, shipping warehouse, etc., etc. But man, zombies chasing you around inside a dark, blood-soaked slaughterhouse! Meat hanging everywhere and everything!
12. Shopping Mall
Yeah, like in DAWN OF THE DEAD (the original, thank you very much). I agree with many of you, a game like this cries out in agony for a shopping mall level! To me that should be a given. My ultimate dream would be for it to literally be closely modeled after the mall in DOTD, Monroeville Mall. But if TRS doesn't at least do some kind of mall level, I'll be very disappointed. And then begin making it myself.
Well, OK. Enough for now. I've got lots more ideas. I'll share some more later.
Yes, that's a threat. ;)

I liked the long list... I'll just have to make one of my own! (poor spelling is a given)
1. Alcatraz, Going along with the insane aslyum/prison theme it would be so awsome to blast zombies in that place. A prison would be the best place, just think of a prison hall with all the infected in their cells, clawing at you and as you make your way down the corridor the doors suddenly open and they rush out!
2. This may sound weird, but it would be awsome to fight zombies in bagdhad! You would have the that great atmosphere with a wartorn city, and it would be more intresting than your generic city street. You could have some zombies that where soldiers and would be covered in body armor so they are harder to kill.
3. Washinton D.C. Shooting zombies in the white house anyone? You could also use all the monuments and the reflecting pool for zombie related mayhem. Or it would be perfect for that moment you bust into the oval office and realise that you don't notice anything different about cheney :P This could also be the center of a cool "save the president" plotline (although who wants to save bush?)
4. Space.
5. Japan/China, it would be pretty awsome to fight zombies there. Alot of funky japanese bars and tightly packed alleyways. Or anywhere in asia, as long as you get that cool oriental feel. Especially if you had a teahouse fight, or a martial arts school that has npc's kicking zombies asses with kung fu.
6. A Giant cruise ship. The pleasure cruise kind, blasting zombies into the pool, climbing the rock climbing wall with zombies at your feet (yes, some do have rock climbing walls). You would have to surivive on the ship for a certian amount of time untill the pilot (who has baracaded himself in the wheel room) gets the ship to land. The cramped quarters would provide a crazy enviroment and
7. Stalingrad, It has that perfect grungy atmosphere, just think... zombies lurching everywhere amid snowswept concrete; Mowing down hordes of undead in red square...
Its great. Its also a really great city, and has lots of dingy apartment buildings and poverty struck areas as well as some really fancy clubs and mansions.
8. Zombies attacking a castle... Its wierd but oh so cool. They would climb the walls and batter the gates, and you would have to slowly fall back to the inner walls, and finally the hall for a final defense.. actually scratch that, zombies at helms deep! or even better... minas tirith... oliphant zombies... hell yes.
9. Amusment park, kind of like coney island. With a funhouse, various rides, (one with a fake zombie that pops up, but people would shoot it because they would think it was real :P) and of course, a funhouse filled with the undead.
10. A surburban neighborhood, with enterable houses and lots of undead. This has been done alot, but its still a really cool idea. Not much to more to say on this topic
11. Of course, there must be a mall. But I'm betting the left4dead guys have included one somewhere, so its not to big of a deal. And its been done almost to death, so I'm sure we all know what would be included.
12. Central park and its surrounding buildings. You could pop the zoo idea in there to just for kicks with some exibits filled with zombies, although the real question is... Zombie lion or no zombie lion?
13. I heard somewhere that this is going to be in the game, but a rural area with plenty of cornfields and barns. You could also have a woods area in this one, but it would have to be really thick, thick woods. And a abandoned cabin somewhere in there what would be a great place for a seige.
That's it, I have way to much time on my hands, but I thought this was a pretty good way to spend it :)

I really like the skyscraper ideas. Something about fighting towards the rooftop of a colossal mall like (SimTower anyone?) tower where you have to worry about what might come from above or below or maybe even through the windows. Not to mention some decent elevator action.
Hmmm, I seemed to think of the city back during WWII when you were describing this. Which made it ten times more interesting. WWII zombies have hardily been done.

Thanks! Glad someone did. :) Hey, I like yours, too! Lots of great ideas.
4. Space.
Yes! I contend that this could be done--if handled correctly (as crazy as it sounds). I have some in-depth ideas on how to make this scenario work and not turn out goofy.
6. A Giant cruise ship.
There's a gorgeous ship level for CSS (called Meridian) that pulls this off well. Just take out the T's and throw in some L4D infected and it's a done deal!--though for this I'd actually.rather have a huge, dark, derelict ship or freighter.
7. Stalingrad
Hmm. Yes... Interesting idea. Could work well! Even be cool to see a zombified Normandy level, too! Think about it.
9. Amusment park
10. A surburban neighborhood
Yep, we all are in agreement on these for sure.
11. Of course, there must be a mall. But I'm betting the left4dead guys have included one somewhere
Man, I hope so. L4D positively has to have a shopping mall to explore or run through.
13. I heard somewhere that this is going to be in the game, but a rural area with plenty of cornfields and barns. You could also have a woods area in this one, but it would have to be really thick, thick woods. And a abandoned cabin somewhere in there what would be a great place for a seige.

Umm, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the levels were organized in sort of a campaign style, more like the TF2 CP maps. Like, you complete one area of the 'map' and move on to the next, progressing through the city and buildings. Alot of these suggestions seem to be just one location, or one building. Wouldn't they have to be part of something bigger?
I have lots of ideas for things I'd like to see, but mostly I want a Resident Evil inspired map done right hehe. I know, these are fast zombies, this isn't Resident Evil, blah blah blah.. but I can still hope lol. And I see the campaign style (if I'm right) as the perfect way to do one.
Raccoon City would make for a great environment, and players could progress through familiar places, and new ones. Include things from the games, like the hospital, sewers, town hall, etc. Hell, even the forest surrounding the city could be used. And not to mention, the infamous mansion could play some part. This just a small idea in my head, but I think it has loads of potential.

I want to see a surreal or supernatural level like silent hill. If it's not completely weird and has to be realistic still, at least make it in an odd location like in underground caves where sections of the cave are submerged in water and you have to swim through it.
Although, I would like to see bloody fences everywhere to replace buildings and the ground...

How's about an army/navy base? Plenty of fixed gun points, sandbags to shore up doors, heli/plane/boat escapes.
Or, and I know they'd never be able to secure permission, but what about Disney World!!! They'd have to run thru 'It's a Small World', the ride gives me the fucking creeps anyway so why not add zombies!

i just wanna see some ppl create some "experiment" maps, that really arent amazing as full-fledged maps..
example: It would be really cool to see a map where its Normandy, and ur inside the bunker with lots of ammo, and the zombies come off of boats and up the hill. And mind u, there would be a shitload of zombies to make up for the advantage of higher ground. Once the zombz got to the bunker, they could hop thru the little opening, or run around back and smash thru the door behind u... It could possibly be very epic, although not a zombie style location.

....and some bad ones.
Raccoon City, Silent Hill, WWII, outer space, etc.

edit : actually WWII might be cool, but thats as much models and guns as mapping
(but NO 'overlord' beach shit... i hate that for some reason)

WWII,
outer space,
Well, atleast he's specific.
i just wanna see some ppl create some "experiment" maps, that really arent amazing as full-fledged maps..
example: It would be really cool to see a map where its Normandy, and ur inside the bunker with lots of ammo, and the zombies come off of boats and up the hill. And mind u, there would be a shitload of zombies to make up for the advantage of higher ground. Once the zombz got to the bunker, they could hop thru the little opening, or run around back and smash thru the door behind u... It could possibly be very epic, although not a zombie style location.
Zombies can't use boats... and the bunkers were huge, definately too big for four people to cover... A similar scenario would be cool, this reminded me of the overlord map in Zombie mod, but any reference to Normandy and it'd put a foul taste in my mouth. Unless of course something epicz0rz happened to the game and the Source engine that allowed for double the zombies to be on screen at once... then it might be cool.
Could be a cool "defense" scenario, contrary to the escape scenario we've all heard about. Could be divided up into the beach, and then the bunker, and maybe even if the bunker falls, an escape... I was thinking more in pillboxes on the beach level... so you're not just out in the open. Still, 4 people ain't enough.
Shit that sounds cool, like dynamic play field in TF2, where maps you play vary with victories/defeats.

The last map of the level is a train yard, kind of like when you get the crowbar in HL 2. You have to fight your way to the only functional train left.
One aboard, you have time to explore its length, setting things up before someone starts the engine. Once the engine starts, the countdown begins!
The train slowly goes through the city, picking up speed as it advances. Infected jump down from overpasses, run alongside the tracks and climb on board, or less pour out of the train cars left unattended. With the constant changing scenery, you never know where they might come from next.
And to make things worse, some of the cars are detaching! The group absolutely has to stay together as anyone left behind will be overwhelmed.
And explosions for some reason! Yeah!

Okay, so you start on the back of an F14 that's in flight! The survivors run around (circles) as infected pour out of the cockpit and engines!!!
Then the plane crashes on a Carrier that's falling down a waterfall! The survivors have to make it to the front of the ship as Infected come out of the torpedo tubes and waterfall!1!
Then the boat crashes on an island that has an active exploding volcano! Now Infected are coming out of the volcano on fire and can spit lava!
And for the finale the Survivors have to launch a space shuttle because the moon is crashing into the Earth!!! Moon Infected!!
... I think I may be losing my mind waiting for this game.

Hey, how about climbing up a really steep mountain? There'd be ledges, caves and rope-bridges!
Keeping the rope-bridge intact would be really hard, but crossing it would shave off an enormous amount of time from the travel!
I really look forward to making maps!

i would like to see the battle of bastonge map, and i know what you're thinking, but it could work. The first stage is running through the forest and slit trenches, the second the city itself, the third getting to the crossroads beyond the town, and finally having the army come pick you up at the fall back point.
