View Full Version : CAUTION!!! BeWARE OF NEW WAY TO GET YOUR ACCOUNT JACKED!!!

Dioroxic

-Beware of FAKE STEAM COMMUNITYS. Hackers are sending them around to people and they look normal like www.steamcommunity.com (http://www.steamcommunity.com), but then they have weird symbols and numbers at the end.

-BEWARE IF A FRIEND SENDS IT TO YOU ON STEAM. Hackers will hack your friends account and then send you the link and say "hey man check this out" or something like that. It might not actually be your friend.

-BE CAUTIOUS

Q: What if it happens to me?

A: go to the steam support page (https://support.steampowered.com/) and get them to reset your password.

Just make sure you dont type ur account name and pass in on those fake sites. They ask you to log in, but really its just going to get your info and send it to someones e-mail or something.

I know this is a new kind of way to get your account jacked because it happened to me and a friend of mine. We are all good though thanks to the support letting us get our passes reset.

EDIT: Aparently most of these sites (if not all) end in .tk. I dont remember what the one that got my account jacked was, but it was probably .tk

I actually saw one of these spammers spamming in the 411 community chat in Steam. Reptile was faster than a speeding reptile and banned his ass, tho...

The site ended with the free ".tk", so never ever trust those site anyways. They're the "free" domains, everyone can get. A kind of publicity stunt from Tokelau

I got 1 some time ago from a random person, he sent me a link to a site named steamcommmunity.com
I think you see why it's fake: steamcommmunity.
There's 3 m's, don't enter it and Don't enter your Username or Password.

But I've also gotten many of the "Get Free Steam Games Here" and they ended with a .tk

Basically, if anyone just randomly posts a link to what looks like Steam Community, don't click it and especially don't enter your info there.

Well , not a lot of reasons to use firefox instead of the steam browser to visit steam community pages. Said browser will only show links to valve's sites so there is zero risk afaik.

Thanks Dioroxic, 'tis good to be wary.

TheHidden

Thanks for the warning.

Also, if you use another browser, than the steam integrated one (which some of us will have to do, if they check those sites from work or similar), note that the original steamcommunity.com page will ALWAYS redirect you to a secure server (as noted by the https://).
At least FF3 will show you the identification of the site as "Valve Corporation (US)", in the navigation bar.
If any of this is missing, it's DEFINITELY not the steamcommunity.

Fun Fact:

Steam chat has a white list (As you should know) where all steam sites are added (Along with other trusted sites like youtube). If you don't know what this means, if I send you a link from an official steam/valve page, a dialog box will NOT pop up (The one that says "Are you sure you want to go to this page?"). Going to those fake websites will make the dialog box pop-up, and that is your cue to GTFO.

It's not hacking, it's stealing.
They can't hack your computer through steam.
They steal your accounts if you are so stupid that you try to login in those sites, and then you will lose your account.

It's phishing!

SupremeHumanBeing
03-27-2009, 06:02 AM
How is this new?

This is alos not hacking. This is phishing. They mislead you to believe that you are entering your details into a legit Steam website.

You can only lose your account if you are a total idiot. Never use your steam network username and password except in Steam.

Never click on links from people you don't trust.

Losing your Steam account can only be your fault and not some l33t haxxor with epic skillz and bulsshit like that.

There are thousands of these sites out there. If you use FireFox, you can report a website to the FF community. Next update will include this website and future users will be warned.

DethPenguin
03-27-2009, 06:14 AM
How is this new?

Agreed. I thought this was always how people jacked your account? I remember clicking on one, and good ol' FireFox told me something among the lines of: "This site is impersonating an official website and has been logged for: phishing."

I emailed a pic of it to VAVLE and got my account back in like 3 days so yeah dont be a nub like me be aware.

Pretty obvious really. Steam doesn't just release new websites out of the blue and tell you about it randomly in a chat. Steam/Valve doesn't need the assistance of free web hosting. Steam/Valve doesn't go around on youtube comments telling their users about free content.

4. Make a separate FTP server
5. Tell people to join you or "check it out"

I merged your thread with this sticky. The best thing to do is just to report him and move on. Pointing out individual people isn't very effective, considering the size of Steam's userbase.

It's simple really,
It's late.
You're half-drunk.
You're on the mic with a good friend.
You're bored and curious.

All of these things add up to be quite the combination for failure.

Here's my tip for never ever getting hacked ever.

Never give your login information to ANYONE. There are no "free game" deals and if there were it wouldn't be worth it. There is no-one on your account so Valve don't need to "confirm that you are the rightful owner of this account". There is no reason ever to give your login information to anyone. So don't.

one of them

That's how they got me too, like you I imagine it was just a window of brainfart where you're suggestive - you see what looks like a steam login thing and type your info in, it's almost a reflex. Still, "never give to anyone" means anyone, including Valve. Why would they need your login info anyway? They already have it.

And Mini Moose: HL2: DM isn't worth it.

Well, now that I think about it, when I link you to stuff out of the blue, it's usually Youtube or Wegame or a thread. When we're talking, that's when I usually do other sites, usually for downloading things or giving you information for something.

I've heard this somewhere before.

I got my steam account hacked once, I e-mailed Steam Support on Wednesday, they responded by Thursday with instructions. I followed the instructions and had my account back in my possession and working perfectly by Friday.

IMO Steam Support is really good compared to some other companies I've had to do something with. Either I got really lucky or people are too impatient.

Him: Oooooh My goooooooooooooooood

For those who use steam trading, you should check this out:

New Scam! Do Not Click Links! (http://www.reddit.com/r/tf2trade/comments/s0h1z/new_scam_do_not_click_links/)

Basically don't click any links while you're in the trade window, because it's possible to gain control of the trade and the inventory of others via web scripts. Worst case scenario would be, you lose all your items, games, guest passes that you have in your inventory.

Elite
04-12-2012, 04:30 PM
TF2 trade is serious business.

Stuffinator
04-13-2012, 03:10 AM
Of course it is. There are people who make around $1000 every month by scamming and then trading those items for money.

And it's not only TF2, theoretically this scam method can be used to obtain games as well.
