Ok I decided it would be best to get a new Core Duo Processor.

I have a Asus P4SD-LA Motherboard, with a 478 socket. My one friend insists I buy a new motherboard, but if I can find a decent duo core processor, I would be happy.

Just from some random browsing, it seems like I can find a processor compatible with socket 478, but can anyone confirm?

Are all desktop Core Duo processors not socket 775? I think the 478 Core Duo is only meant for mobile (laptops). I could be wrong, though.

Damn. You're probably right. That's similar to what my friend said.

I really don't want antoher motherboard. I have an AGP graphics card (Practically Brand New), so most likely I'd need to get a new one (PCI-Express).

Edit:

I think this Motherboard should work fine: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtool s/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2366188&Sku=M452-2652&SRC CODE=GOOGLEBASE&CMP=OTC-GOOGLEBASE (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2366188&Sku=M452-2652&SRCCODE=GOOGLEBASE&CMP=OTC-GOOGLEBASE)

Post any other boards with AGP/Socket 775 that may work better.

Take into consideration that the mobo you posted only supports DDR2 533/400MHz.

You lost me. Believe me, I'm not very tech savy.

If I have to, i'll get a motherboard with a pci-express card: But I may have to put it off a little while since I have to buy a new graphics card then (The new AGP card I bought was an Nvidia 7600 GS with 512 MB memory: $200).

The Core Duo is not the same as the Core 2 Duo. The Core Duo is not much of a gaming CPU while the Core 2 Duo is a gaming beast.

The s478 Core Duo is a mobile processor. While it has the same amount of pins as your motherboard, they are arranged differently. So the s478 Core Duo wouldn't work correctly in your motherboard nor would it be much of an upgrade, if at all.

Yeah i hardly know any tech stuff either except for select few lol.

What i was trying to say is that when you get RAM, mostly nowadays its 667MHz or 800MHz, the motherboard you gave the link to only supports RAM at 533 and 400MHz, correct me if im wrong :).

Gotcha Duck. I need to do some research into this, probably won't start buying for a few months. Plenty of time before L4D comes out.

Edit: Here I am again. Now this seems way to expensive, but would this http://www.keenzo.com/showproduct.asp?M=INTEL&ID=1 008658&ref=GB (http://www.keenzo.com/showproduct.asp?M=INTEL&ID=1008658&ref=GB) Core 2 duo processor work in my computer? If so perhaps I can find a cheaper one on Ebay/misc. sites.

I really hate to bother you guys, but I'm an idiot when it comes to my computers innards. I bought a PCI-Express card awhile ago, not knowing my computer was still AGP :)

The reason it's so expensive, it's mobile technology meant for laptops. You prolly won't find it for a whole lot cheaper, elsewhere. Can you use mobile processors in desktops? I guess so, assuming the pins are the same (though I don't think they are). But there's absolutely no reason to do so. If you're gonna drop that kind of coin, you may as well pick up a decent mobo for $120-$150 and grab an e6600 or something for a couple hundred more. Better price:performance and future-proofing, that way. AGP has gone the way of the dinosaur, I'm afraid. Your mobo is reaching the end of it's useful life.

Ok thanks for being blunt. If that is the best route, I'll have to do it, even if it's against my stubborn judgement. :)

Yeah for a processor i would highly reccomend getting an E6600 or a Q6600, ill be getting one of those when i buy my new computer this month (hopefully).

E6600 is only about $230 on Newegg. (Just so you know)

No problem. In fact, I'm sure you can find a mobo for under $100 that will suit your needs, if you're not overly concerned with 800mhz RAM, dual 16x PCI-e slots and all the other bells and whistles.

You can also pick up a low end Nvidia 8-series PCI-e DX10 vid card for less than $150, such as the 8500. It won't be top shelf, but it will do you proud.

DUCK is right. The e6600 is the best Core 2 Duo processor in terms of price/performance. But you can go even lower if raw power isn't important to you, maybe the e6400.

Fact is, you can probably make the entire upgrade for less than $400, if you shop smart and limit your expectations. Thought you might need new RAM, too ... and likely a new PSU, because most PCI-e cards require a direct link to the power supply, and old PSUs lack the proper connections. =P

I have 1 gig of ram right now, so one more wouldn't hurt.

You need a complete PC overhaul. Your not the only person who is going through this crisis either because it's deja vu all over again. We all upgraded for HL2 and Doom 3. You need a new P35 mobo and a quad core CPU. Only thing you can save is your HD, optical drive, and keyboard/mouse/headset/case. In fact you could get a beast of computer for $1,500-$1,600. *Never use tigerdirect btw. They have insanely high prices. Check out my new comp in fact: http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/wishlist/Publi cWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=7309927 (http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=7309927) Take into account of the savings and rebates.

You don't NEED any of that, though it would be the ideal if you are at all concerned with future proofing. However, keep in mind that Quad cores have come down in price quite a bit, and aren't that much more than Core 2 Duo, and I would at least consider a mid-range p35 mobo.
