Hey everyone.
I've been browsing these forums for about 2 months now and have finally decided to sign up. x]
Anyways...I'm developing a survival horror modification for RO (Ragnarok Online) called Oplex. L4D is one of the "greater" influences of this mod, with the AI system and weapons.
Open Beta testing for this game will begin sometime around October, so it'll probably be something that'll -hopefully- entertain you until L4D comes out.

Duckyp, tell you what. I can help you on this. cause by the pics and all it looks promising and I know how it is to do a "Project" this big all by yourself. So if you want, I'll help you. Maybe fix up somethings and stuff like that. Thats your choice though. But good job on the whole thing by being a 1 man team. No harm meant on the "I'll give it till september" comment. Its just that many people have done stuff like this and just give up. I was working on a mod with some people as well, then they all bailed on me and I didnt have the files that they had and such so i just had to stop it.
Just tell me if you want my help and I'll happily do it just so that this project can live. Do you have a MSN?

Oh yeah, for the characters, IMO I think their size should be a little bit more taller. And the colors of the characters should be more....... Darker, instead of the light colors they have.

I'm a fast learner trust me. So whatever you need help on the most or anything like that, just give me 2 days and I'll be a pro at it. But I'm mostly good with graphics, models, anything that has to do with making objects or the characters physical features, I can do that. I'll need a program for it cause I uninstalled all of mine. Cause I thought I wouldnt ever do it again, but HEY someone has woken up a slumbering graphic making beast :D

That video is the "old" version of the game. The first beta test.
Anyways, the music is from the Resident Evil: Apocalypse CD, I think.

what sort of direction will the gameplay take? will it follow the RO style of things, or will you make a new combat system? If it stays the same will you change classes and skills, etc?

Wonderful question. I'm using certain RO class sprites (Not actual classes) as placeholders before I make unique ones.
The point and click system is still there, but the leveling system is completely different.
The point of this game is not "let's see how many zombies I can kill", but rather "how long can I survive?". There are no levels. Instead, you gain stats in two ways:
1. As time passes by, you gain more stat points, which you'd be able to spend in 6 stats: STR, AGI, DEX, VIT, INT, and LUK. Each stat will benefit you in it's unique way; for example, AGI will increase your movement speed and dodge while VIT increases your health and immunity to disease. YES, you will have to eat and sleep to survive.
2. You gain stats from doing things. This idea, originated from Haf from Exanimus, is basically: If you build a barricade, your STR increases. If you run alot, your AGI increases.
I have scripted and coded my own unique items, skills, and job. Everyone will be a survivor (no plans for "zombie" players yet). Everyone will start on the same playing field. It's a game of the survival of the fitest.

Oh one question, how is the combat system? Can you attack yourself or will it be like one of those Final Fantasy kind of combat system? If so, then plz just change it. Make it were you yourself can shoot and attack and stuff. No final fantasy crap ^_^

Remember this is using an RO game engine (I chose RO because of the large community and resources avaliable).
Well, the combat system is sort of RO's click and kill system. Sort of like most MMORPGs out there - WoW, Trickster, Guild Wars, etc.
BUT...it's sort of different. For example, the shotgun.
When using a rifle, you have the option to use a:
1. Normal shot: Just the click and kill
2. Head shot: The user takes some time to aim at the head and deal massive damage
3. Joint shot: The user aims at one of the enemy's joints and deals damage, AND possibly cause external bleeding status.
4. Ankle shot: THe user aims at one of the enemy's ankles and deals damage, AND possibly cause stun or slower movement speed.
I would do something like "press mouse to fire" thing like L4D or some FPS, but it'll be pretty weird for RO. Haha.

Maybe OTS (Over the Shoulder) kind of aimin would be real great. but the aiming over the shoulder thing only happens when you pull out your weapon. When you put it away, its just a third person thing.

Yes. It'll definitely feel slower than an FPS, BUT will obviously be faster than a regular RPG like Ragnarok Online or Guild Wars.
After all, zombies coming after you relentlessly? A pain in the ass. :[

I will release an installer 1 week before the beta. You will not need RO at all.
The official RO servers are pay-to-play.
However, most RO Private servers don't cost anything.
Also: Tanks will sprint after you and knock you over if they see you.

thats what it is. Thats what makes it fun. Just a suggestion. It would be cool. Cause then you can lock doors, go up the ladders and find other online survivors and such. The whole "Pick attack" thing is kind of.......... gay imo. But I'm still looking forward for this.
OH YEAH BTW ducky have you heard of SCZ? Survival Crisis Z, it would be cool if you can make a game like that but online. Or even better, download the game and MAKE it online. GOD I WOULD LOVE YOU FOREVER!

I've been planning to make this since October 2006. On June 2007, I started working on it. We had a closed beta testing of the original version on July, and since then, I've changed alot of the gameplay. So I guess...not that long? The "main" art - the character sprites - is not done by me, but by Gravity.
also, keep it how it is, (regardless of what the one says) for now, if there are any unsuccessful or just plain stupid aspects of the game, they will get ironed out in beta testing. Is there going to be any PvP in this? I know some games use a system where you can choose to have a PvP only charecter that cannot use any freindly NPC's and cannot go in towns ect. Or will it be a more some areas are pvp some arent? Also, it would be pretty cool if stuff you built (traps, barricades, ect.) Stayed where they where even if you logged off. So you could fortify a building and such. Especially If you could get freindly NPC shopkeepers/guards and place them in your building. I'm having a nerdgasm just looking at those screenies. Good luck with it mate :)

Yes, it's going to be a PVP game. Kill zombies and other survivors, haha.
I'm thinking about the barricade feature...maybe not for the beta, but it'll come. Traps are in, definitely (Snares, bombs, etc).

I'd prepare for this possiblity. Without much in the way to fullfill zombie killing desires, you might get a bit more than you're expecting. At least till the fall 'heavy hitting" games come out.

2d anime guys in 3d world? They did that in Survival Crisis Z and it worked well even though it wasn't anime-style.
Actually, just put survival crisis Z online and it's the ultimate mmorpg zombie game.
btw, if anyone could tell me how to put games online in gamemaker that would help since I'm actually working on L4DN now :D no online because I don't know how to add it, but I want to.

Oplex Beta has finally begun.
It's a shame that it's not 24/7 right now. I need to get the main host, but school's been keeping me really occupied.
So the server is being hosted on my home computer.
The uptimes are probably:
Weekdays - 18:00 - 22:00 PST
Weekends - 12:00 - 23:00 PST
Minimum Requirements:
Operating System: Windows 98/me/2000/XP
CPU: Pentium III - 600 or higher
Memory: 128MB and higher
Sound Card: DirectSound or compatible/ Support 3D Sound Effect

So this looks awesome nice job. I see the sprites are placeholders. I'm not a huge anime fan, so I'm wondering what is like the timeline for new 'uns? Or am I being dumb and are there already new ones? Eh, I'll download, it looks sweet. Nice job.

Yeah, I look through these forums once in awhile. Mostly for inspiration when I start losing my will to work.
Sikboy1029: From my perspective, it could have been a lot better. It was actually more of an alpha test, actually.
It's been about 9 months since I started the first testing.
I liked to lay low and be vague, but...
Oplex is completely revamped. If you thought the first open testing was good, you'll be blown away by the next one. If you were like me and thought that the game wasn't as good as it could be, then...you'll find that the new Oplex is a vast improvement.
The new main city map is about 12 times larger.
Almost all buildings are accessible.
Day and night.
There are wild animals in the day and zombies at night.
Over 30 different weapons; in addition, each weapon is unique and customizable.
Example: Player A and B might have the same type of spear, but Player A's spear is faster, but weaker while Player B's spear is stronger but slower.
Three different categories of skills. In one of the categories, skills can only be learnt through a "player teaches another player" system.
Sewers are now a type of "dungeon," rather than a safe haven.
PVP commences. Long live the Gangbangers organization (only players from the first testing period will get this).
4 different bosses, located in 4 key areas of the game.
Much more aesthetically pleasing than the first testing.
New stat system. No more stat points based on duration of gameplay.
Stable servers.
When the website is fully functional, you will know that it is almost time to begin open testing.
An MMORPG that says, "We want to be different. Forget the fantasy adventures, let's dwell in the world of chaos."

Just thought I'd mention that it seems like this game is back, and I'm checking it out now.
In the first version, I had some fun, but pvp and items weren't quite what I would have liked.
I'll see what the new version is like.
Edit:
Well apparently the newest version isn't released yet.
And it sounds like PvP will be much the same. =/
