If it is used in a derogatory way then, yes, I don't like that. It's a word that has an actual meaning, but I'm not going to judge on whether "retarded" should be used as what it was inteded as or not at all, because English isn't my first language.

It doesn't matter why or how certain disabilities exist and if you think that they are all heritable, then you are wrong. It can happen to any baby or adult, but that's beside the point.

The point is that there are real people with real disabilities and they are living in every community around the world. As I mentioned above, using the word "retarded" as an insult is discriminating on the same level as discrimination based on ethnicity, sex or sexual preference and you are a hypocrite if you ignore this fact.

I have to add that "Stop the "R" word week" sounds like a very dumb idea to raise any kind of awareness. It's not educating, it's just yet again more demonizing of the problem.
