Has anyone ever joined a game then been put through to spectating?

Just want to know if this happens to anyone else, why it happens, and how once spectating i can actually play if there is a space free.

Yes, but only once. I have been in a couple of games where there has been a spectator and he/she kept trying to kick everyone.

My experience as a spectator is pretty funny, because I knew I wasn't a survivor because I saw they had 4 humans on their team. So I was waiting to spawn in as an infected, and after about two minutes I was like "This is taking forever." Then I press select and see 4 survivors and then 4 people as infected. I then proceeded to leave the game.

Yes, if you join in as a spectator you will stay as a spectator until you leave. I believe this only happens when you join a game at the same time someone else is joining, and they get in first.

I didn't know about this until a few days ago, when it happened to me 3 times in row, weird.
