View Full Version : Taking a break in Versus

I'm so tired of not being able to take a break in Versus Mode. Can someone please explain to me why the **** Valve didn't make it possible? o.O
I mean, how hard can it be? Automatically let the A.I. take over the Survivor or Infected player after 15 seconds and if the player doesn't come back within 60 seconds, the player is automatically kicked from the game. Same goes for manually taking a break, if the player doesn't come back within 60 seconds, kick him/her.
I hate it that every time I have to take a leak or do something else real quick, I'm forced to quit the game, cause I can't take a break...

yeah this does suck, i dont want to let my team down so i just quit. even if its just to turn off the oven or something it could make or break the game.
i suppose its so that people actually set aside the time to play vs. i mean it wouldnt be very team oriented if you took a break every 5 minutes to text your friend or do something other than playing the game. why start it if you arent going to actually play it? but small breaks like you suggested yeah sure. that would be a nice fix.

Yeah, that's absolutely true. And like you said, small breaks are indeed what we need. I don't want to abandon my team every time I have to do something.

Well if you have fair opponents, tell them that you're afk for 1-2 minutes and then they wait. Even if they don't wait, your mates can protect you well in the saferoom! And if you are infected, well then attack and when you die you have your 25-30 seconds!

It's highly unlikely you'll have fair opponents every time you have to go AFK.
And if you are infected, well then attack and when you die you have your 25-30 seconds!
True, but I don't think that should be the solution to such a simple problem.

the reason why they didnt put it in is because, if you have played vs in single player against bots it is impossible to win, they see through trees, own tanks and move lightning fast and all without nades. whole teams would just take a break and let the bots do it for them to get a really good score.

True, but this is only in the most rare cases IMO because it defies the whole purpose of the game. Personally I find it easier to play against bots than pro L4D players.

pro players will stop and look for supplies, and stay in the same area for a cresendo event, bots wont look for supplies and during events as soon as the door/path is open there are out of it ASAP, I have tried beating the bots on NM1 with 3 friends and they shoot you out of the air as meele, break your tongue as smoker and clear hordes in seconds. The only thing that can seem to beat them is witches because they stop and dont go near her
EDIT: i would agree tho that maybe 1 person from a group should be able to take a break

and stay in the same area for a cresendo event
This makes it harder, 4 pro L4D players can easily save each other when something happens.

That's true.

4 pro L4D players can do the same.

they do it with such ease tho >:(
and its completely the opposite if a comp gets to play as infected, the tanks just run straight through fire and solely try and kill 1 person

Yeah, but think about it. The A.I. will focus on one person, which allows other players to take the Tank down. A human player incaps a Survivor and moves on, this allows an other player to rescue that incapped survivor, which makes it harder for the human player that controls the Tank. Especially when it's on fire.

I don't mind this type of thing while I'm playing infected, the respawn countdown is usually enough for me. For the survivors though, I think you should be able to go to "take a break", but unlike its campaign counterpart it would start a big 60 second counter, and then you have to wait a little bit before you can use it again (unless you end the countdown early). The countdown would stop it being abused (people doing it on Blood harvest for the AI's x-ray vision etc) while giving people a chance to pop off for a second.

Maybe there should be an option to vote to pause the game? While many people would simply vote no, it may be the easiest to implement option, and it could auto timeout in 60 seconds or so and only be usable, say, 3 times for any particular campaign. I did see a cvar for making a server pausable, anyone know if this works?

I can't see how allowing one person per team to take a break would be an issue.
Even if only survivors had the option, infected players can simply *not* spawn when they need to go afk, if *one* survivor at a time could do it, it would be just fine afaic.

I wouldn't mind the ability, but maybe it could be a vote to allow the person to or not.
Just an idea.

Haven't played versus for... let's say, 2 months.

this would be a nice feature, and potentially give the zombies a fun advantage :)

But then there's always the issue of slight abuse. Playing Blood Harvest and you know an infected is in the bushes somewhere, just go afk and let the bot shoot them through the trees then go back.

We need this. I drink gatorade when I play versus, and nearly I piss myself with laughter or anxiety and have to wait for the saferoom each time I need to take a leak.
But like KPlus said, there is a chance it can be easily abused. A high chance at that.
I wonder if Valve has tested this before?

I've gotten my cousin mad at me a couple of times in versus when we're playing a good team and I had to go to the door to get pizza.

I could really use this feature. Phone calls suck when I'm playing versus.

When did the "take a break" button vanish in development!!
well gosh darnit, I don't know why a temporary bot would make the game harder or easier for either team.
Except for infected bots, Boomer bots = PHAIL!

Well, first of all, not even the most pro person with high pressure bladder can get up, run to the toilet, push the pee out with 5 bar pressure and run back in 60 sec... oh, wait. They can, but it's pretty rare and depends on the size of the appartment/house.
Second, there's about 1-2minutes time from the moment the survivors close the door of the saferoom to the start of the next map with the load and all. And if you're the survi next round, this means, that you have even more time as you can tell your team "Brb... fast bio" and I'd assume that they'll wait for you to return without opening the door. If they won't then that's not a team to play with in the first place.
Third, if you happen to be infected, the few seconds in the beginning of the map isn't gonna make you lose.
So basically, what I'm saying, that everyone should be able to take their breaks during map changes. If you can't, then you're doing something wrong. The overwhelming urge to pee won't come suddenly, unless you have some chronic problems or you're drinking beer. In the latter case, you're not playing too well anyways, so you can rush to the toilet when you're dead in survi/infected side. And the oven can wait for the few minutes... and if it can't then you've yet again done something wrong, when you joined the game during such critical times.

If you wet your pants, then you know that the 60sec break is not enough and therefor it would be the same thing to actually just disconnect ;) Or take the break during the map change. :P

I've tried it. It's possible (I came back in 53 seconds xD), but I almost broke a leg running down the stairs and I didn't wash my hands afterwards (Not that I don't do that every time...). =P

I have my toilet 3 meters away from my compu (benefits of having a 23 square meter apartment). :P So I can pretty much rush to the toilet, pressure-pee and return in the time I've died as inf and gotten to the ghost. I can almost run to the fridge and grab a beer during that time, but I usually grab it after the next death :D

Yeah, and the next death you'll run to the toilet again because of the beer! Which causes you to grab another beer! Which causes you to run the toilet yet again! Which caus-...

That's basically it. I have, otoh, developed a beer bladder, so I can play about 1 full map without going, when drinking. ;)

An idea to stop it being exploited. 60 second time limit, once per round, if all on a team go idle by pressing the "take a Break" option in the menu they automatically lose the round, only get distance traveled, no suvivor multpilier, no health multiplier.

I mean, do you honestly all have the bladder control of a child? Start doing the pee-pee dance in your chair cause you can't hold it for 10 min? What do you do when your out in public?
As for other distractions, oh well.
