well. is the "explosion" effect a placeholder or is that how it's going to look?

it looks like absolute crap when it hits the ground, but they haven't started showing it until recently, so that makes me think they're done with it. but at the same time it looks so bad I can't believe that's final

Yeah, I wouldn't usually care about that kind of thing, but can you imagine how awsome a good explosion effect would look in this game?

right now all that happens is the bottle disappears into the ground then a lake of fire rises up.

a huge blast of fire would look sweet but would probably finish your computer off

I was very sad when I saw that. The molotov was one of the things that I was most excited about. I really hope that is a placeholder.

It just doesn't look on par with the rest of the game. It looks like someone turns on a giant gas stove slowly with little flames shooting out of random holes. I've got a feeling that Mr. Booth would not let that fly.

If you ever experiment with large amounts of gasoline you would know that there are no explosions or huge puffs of fire, that's the movies, its just a chain reaction at a running speed causing everything else to ignite, mostly blue flames and some red and yellow. No smoke as it is a gas based fire, smoke comes in after a burning length of a minute aprox.

They have improved the looks of explosions/fire recently. You can see the gas staion blowing up at the Gamespot Gameplay Movie 4 (link (http://www.gamespot.com/video/937406/6178263/left-4-dead-gameplay-movie-4)). Looks much better already. :)

Yeah, there is no explosion from the molotov, the fire is crap... but there IS no explosion. So I don't know what you're complaining about. It's obviously not final considering its the same fire source has been using since HL2.

They should have those bottles filled with gasoline light up like a nuke man! Booom! Massive apocalyptic mushroom cloud, blinding white light and everything in slow mo as the buildings get obliterated by the blast wave!!!!

Haha, joking aside... a little incendiary artistic license wouldn't go amiss but a bottle filled with flammable liquid ain't ever really going to explode. There's simply no pressure in an open bottle, for starters.
