View Full Version : Can't edit old posts?

Sorry, I know that you're probably going to close this and tell me to post in the other thread about the new forums, but I thought I should bring this to peoples' attention if they didn't know already.

Yeah, we can't edit any old posts that we made in the past.
Normally, I'd be okay with that, but those of us who have been working on our stories in the fanfic competition now have all of our quotation marks replaced with """, making old chapters difficult to read, and we can't change it!

Also, all the links to other threads/posts have become obsolete and we can't change them if we can't edit our old posts...

Any solutions? Thanks.

EDIT: Shit, feel free to move this to Off-Topic if you feel it's necessary...

I actually made a post about the same issue earlier today. Rather than repeat myself here, I'll just link (http://www.left4dead411.com/forums/showpost.php?p=266378&postcount=183) to my post. It appears that after a few hours, we lose the ability to edit a post. Suffice to say, this is incredibly irritating and should definitely be looked into.

Also, the timestamp doesn't always appear. I edited this twice and still don't see the timestamp at the bottom of my post. Edit's definitely a little broken.

Oops, my bad. I thought I had searched hard...
Still, most people seem to have ignored your post.

We must be able to edit! For teh interweebz' sake!

Indeed, my post got lost in the sea of posts, so this thread was like an island. I shall join your cause!

Bring editing back!

Yeah, actually it's always been that way, but maybe not this severe.

If it's super-important I'll edit stuff for you.

You have to add more text. you can correct grammer without it caring, but when you add more text such as a whole sentence it appears.

 You mean to tell me that all vBulletin boards disallow editing after a few hours?? That's pretty fail. Off the top of my head, I know that Invision doesn't finalize posts, and I'm pretty sure phpBB doesn't either. I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've heard of this.

I don't know if I'll be able to snag a moderator every time I want to edit...there's seriously nothing that can be done about this?

vbulletin has an option settable by administrators to alter the time limit, and possibly even remove it. you should ask one of them.

I sent an email through the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the page. Here's what I wrote:

Subject: Edit timer removal

I have already posted about this and there is also a topic dedicated to this:
http://www.left4dead411.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11319
http://www.left4dead411.com/forums/showpost.php?p=266378&postcount=183

Basically, after a few hours, our posts become finalized and we are no longer able to edit them. This is a problem for those of us with ongoing topics that wish to constantly update the original post. It also provides frustration when a typo is spotted in an earlier post or if a member simply wishes to edit a previous post.

I've done a bit of digging, and it appears that this is a feature built into vBulletin. I've found that it can be turned off as well. It appears that the reason it was implemented was to prevent people from changing previous posts and causing confusion for readers later, but I feel that it does more harm than good. With it in place, errors that may be caught several hours later cannot be removed, nor can topics be updated, meaning we must constantly post insted of update the topic post.

A poster on one of the sites I found stated that this can be removed by going to

vbulletin Admin > vbulletin Options > Message Posting and Editing Options > Time Limit on Editing of Posts

and changing the value to 0. Please consider removing this limit as it will only cause more frustration later on. Thank you!

P.S. Here are the sites that came up while searching for a solution to the problem:
http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=298196
http://www.rollitup.org/support/177904-time-limit-editing-posts.html
http://forums.tizag.com/showthread.php?t=1034
http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=98443

Hopefully I can get a response, either by email or in this topic. This is a pretty frustrating issue.

I do believe they are working on it hiryu. Just give them time as they update the site with the new system and figure stuff out for themselves.

Remember, they just updated what, less than 24 hours ago? Maybe 48 hours ago? (sorry, my sense of time is utterly gone due to cramming and lack of sleep) So, for a total system change, I think things are going pretty smoothly actually.

edit: I assume they knew that very well and fine, but they wanted to take baby steps. As once you have something wrong, adding something more (and usually it doesnt matter if its right or wrong) totally topples everything.

I assume they just want to get everything they have now working, and make sure they have no underlying problems before opening the flood gates.

Heh, I hope I wasn't sounding too impatient! It's just that I'd rather have some form of acknowledgement, be it positive or negative, than be completely in the dark. I'm sure I'm not alone there.

I can appreciate that they completely changed the forums in the past few days and things still need to be worked out.

The timing is a little unfortunate though, because the fanfic competition is ending soon and the quotation marks have been screwed up for all the old chapters that people wrote.
Could somebody do a Find/Replace on all the """s and replace them with quotation marks?
Most peoples' are here.

I did yours.

If other people want theirs changed, they can PM me; I'm not changing them without specific requests.

Yeah... don't laugh at me but I sometimes go through some of my old posts and correct the wrong doings of the past. Just something I do when I'm bored. Now it's no longer possible :(

Unless...
SOOOOOO, SHRUB. I heard you liek correcting posts?

you should ask one of them.
Don't ask me, I don't know anything.

You have to add more text. you can correct grammer without it caring, but when you add more text such as a whole sentence it appears.

Not too sure on that. I edited "to" = "too" and the edited by stamp didn't show up.

I edited "your" = "you" on a different post and it put the stamp on my post.

Then I added a full sentence to a different post and it didn't put on the stamp.

R: 5 (Repeated, and bleh, but nice title!)
L: 630 (/100= 6.3)

5(.25)+6.3-.25=

The time limit for editing has now been set to a week. That should be about the same as the old forum's limit.
