View Full Version : Tab-Screen Ping is Incorrect

Every once in a while someone will kick me because they think I'm lagging. I thought this was weird because I WASN'T lagging. I usually look at my ping using net_graph. I tried looking at tab and realized that it was a COMPLETELY different ping than net_graph was showing.
EXAMPLE (http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i299/Darksagejl/lag1.jpg)
As you can see, the pings in the Tab Screen are off by about 67. This number varies however, because sometimes the ping in the tab screen will only be off by about 10-20. Anyone noticed this? I did a while ago, but it hasn't been fixed. I wonder if it's just me.

It's just it doesn't update as often as it should. So if it keeps spiking or varying a lot, it sometimes keeps the higher ping up there.

Yep. What One Said. WAit a bit and then it'll be the same.

No, it's not that. I HAVE waited a bit. It has never gone down to the level of my net_graph ping. It always hovers a certain amount above it.

Yea, what I'm saying is: let's say your net_graph ping updates every .25 seconds, but the tab ping updates every second or so. If net_graph ping keeps varying and going up and down, the tab ping might be catching it on the higher pings and staying there.
Have you noticed how that when you first join a server your ping is in red, or at least mine is. Then 5-10 seconds later its green. Net_graph told me mine was going to be green but it took the game a while to tell me that.

When hosting a LAN server, my net_graph ping is 0 (as it should be) but my scoreboard ping gets as high as 20 sometimes

my Lan ping is always 5. Dunno why.
I've noticed, also that the tabbed ping is different from the ping reported in the console command "ping." I think that the tabbed ping uses an average recorded over a time period. I've noticed someone's ping jump to 700 when they have a lag spike, and then it takes at least 10 seconds to slowly climb down back to show what their ping actually has been for the past 9 seconds.
As for why it seems that the tab screen is higher on average than netgraph, I can offer no solution. Are you sure that you do not have lag spikes, even little ones? Try looking at that little chart of your ping next time.
