View Full Version : Death Toll versus is too hard

There is nothing I dread more than playing Death Toll. The levels are miles long. Rape opportunities for Infected are endless. Even the first level is so punishing that it is quite an accomplishment to get to the end as survivors without losing anyone. Death Toll requires me to go into full concentration mode since it is so unforgiving and by the time I get to the end of a level I am completely exhausted that I hardly have the energy to go on. After I play a game of Death Toll I usually log off.

Do you guys feel the same way? Not the whole log off thing, but that its ridiculously hard to the point that it's draining to survive?

Doesn't that mean that it is pathetically easy to play as infected?

No and if i thought it was so horrible to play, i wouldn't play it :P

I've been told Dead Air is longer.

Not to belittle your opinion, but I'm pretty sure the game was supposed to be hard for survivors. They are not meant to make it all the way through, let alone with all four survivors still alive.

I do agree that Death Toll is by far the most difficult campaign to play as survivors. Not necessarily because of the ambush spots for the infected, but because of the distance - as you stated.

Edit: That being said, I find it fun to be stretched to my limits with my team. If we don't survive, sure it's disappointing... but now it's our turn to attack them.

Well, quoting Chet / whoever said this on Valve team (Not exact quote) "Death Toll will be by far the hardest versus campaign to date, blah, blah, blah".

I do agree though it is long and exhausting, I hardly get through the entire thing myself.

But, quoting someone else (Again not exactly) "Versus is not meant for people to finish the map, but to see what team of survivors can get farther".

I've found Death Toll the easiest map to play, and most enjoyable. I personally still hate Blood Harvest.

i love when someone complains that something is "easy for infected" or "easy for survivors"

You get to play as both every map. its not about whats easy and whats hard, its about how well your team is able to overcome the other.

I enjoy Death Toll, and found it to be my favorite versus campaign long before it was made official. I've been playing advanced difficulty versus almost since launch, so I really can't wrap my head around normal difficulty being hard on any of the campaigns. Not to sound like an ass mind you, I'm just used to really working for a win.

Dead Air is a bit longer at times, particularly the construction site map. I like all of the longer levels though.

I also sort of agree with silverx2, though it's still ideal if both teams have a fairly equal chance of victory each round ;)

the only way to make DT and DA easier, the only proven way

before it gets you

find the boomer, kill the boomer

do that, and the levels are all easy.

we played a few nights ago and had some friends trapped right at the beginning of DT 1 when you climb the ladders because we kept getting them with the boomer and then hunters/smokers in the down time. They tried the same thing to us, but I heard it coming the second time and made it a point to run out and kill it, even while i was boomed.

DT and DA are easier for infected, you are right about that. great maps

Last time I played versus it was on Death Toll and found it to be a really great game. As survivors neither team could make it to the end of any level, sometimes my team got close but still didn't make it, until the finale, the other team didn't make it so we won... but it was probably the best winning feeling ever lol!

Death Toll is the best versus map IMO, seems like it levels the playing field for infected and survivors, and it is more of a challenge too.

I don't think I'll play versus on any other map now lol.

Death toll does have some rather unfair settings early on , especially the DT1 tunnel tank spawn. Multiple cars vs no molotovs... DT2 isn't much better either , with T2 weapons *removed* from their campaign spot , but tanks still spawning there. DT3 is long but not completely unfair , lots of open ground. DT4 makes things harder on the infected with tons of invisible walls , DT5 remains the hardest finale in the game obviously (especially since tanks can douse fire) and features a high mortality rate during the rescue from what I've seen.

What? Death Toll is my favorite map for Versus.
The only thing that I think needs fixing is that ladder spot on DT1. If someone is climbing up the ladder and gets to the top then gets pounced, the player below cannot shoot the hunter off of him. Nor can he climb up and melee the hunter off because he is being blocked.
Besides that though, I thought it was loads of fun.

I thought that DT5 was the easiest finale. I haven't played a game there yet where I haven't made it to the boat, winning or losing.

My problem with Death Toll is there are so many hittable objects for tanks. Especially on the first map. Pretty much the entire campaign is a bowling alley for the tank.

I just played with a team of friends vs random pubbers and we dominated 5k to a few hundred. It's really about who's on your team. I still love the map.

DT is the best, and if a tank spawns just get away from the vehicles. Usually the tank needs to aim before hitting the car, take that time to run away and shoot him in the process.

So far every time I have played Death Toll as survivors I have completed all levels, (except the finale but I still got 100% distance) - except that one time in the 4th level where I was the last person and got pounced. Oh wait and there was this on time I encountered a tank who was very gifted at using the Forklift in level 3. Personally I think Death Toll is excellent for Versus, except in the finale where the Tank blocks the way to the boat. Same goes for Blood Harvest when the Tank gets inside the APC too.

A bit off topic, but speaking of punishing new versus maps, has anyone ever triggered a tank after crossing the fence in DA 2 and not gotten completely massacred? It doesn't seem possible.

One thing you have to remember is if playing as survivors/infected is hard for you as a certain map, odds are it's just as hard for them too. Yes, it is fairly tricky, but this is one of those maps where L4D actually forces co-op, unlike the other versus maps where one can run off on their own and make it.

Remember, if you face it there, they should face it there. And I have a few times in campaign, your best chance is to go into the fire escape once he goes down, maybe even luring him into the hotel.

DA and DT are great for 25-damage pounces.

Yer it's hard which also makes it in my opinion the most enjoyable of all the maps. I don't maybe that's just me.

first people complain that it wasnt released straight up, now they complain its too hard. I think DeathToll and Dead Air are the designers ways of making the infected have their fun for a change. i mean no mercy 3-5 have pretty well protected position for the survivors to fight from. but that means the infected are restricted.

the openess of the last 3 levels levels can make it harder to spawn as infected and easier to get shot at by experienced players.

my friend was complaining that Death Toll was too hard so he stopped playing versus on that map
what a bitch....

I personally loved Death Toll. It is a great mix of open and close quarters that really allows the game to change on the whim.

I don't like both new vs-campaigns! Long as hell and pretty painful playing it! And yeah, both campaigns are full of bugs and exploits!

Best versus campaign, harder> the better.

Why it should be easy for survivors? Best things in L4D is fighting against all odds, blood in your mouth to save your teammates, not trying to get a team which can run through the map like playing singleplayer mode on easy. What's the fun in that? It's called versus for a reason.

Unlike many ragequittin' babies i dont mind gettin killed, its part of the game experience.
Play some singleplayer FPS and wear you quickload key to the max if you cant handle a fair match. Leaving and running away scared wont change anything.

So and whats the fun in being totaly exhausted and unmotivated after playing a DT-campaign, even after a clear victory?

I mean in scrims BH/NM are hard enough. When you try scrimming Death Toll? its just. no one lives. ever.

I could understand if there were more medkits everywhere, but when the levels are miles long and you've only got what you have on your back, then brother, you ain't makin it past half a Death Toll level.

The thing that is so annoying in Versus is the fact that it's so Hardcore now. Nothing is about fun, it's all about winning and being devastated when you are losing. The winning team is 9/10 of the time filled with Assholes who trash talk you the whole time (and they wonder why people RageQuit?) and call YOU an asshole for trash-talking back.

Unless you play with all friends, then it's fun. Unless those friends can be assholes... then it's not.

Wow, I must play with that 1/10th then when we do get owned. Else the team i play with doesn't so that.

I personally don't like getting my ass kicked, it just isn't fun. I also don't like being the ass kicker, that isn't fun for me either. I enjoy a nice even game which is very hard to come by.

This is one of the things I like about the 360 version. If you wanna trash talk, you have to take the time to join someone else's party (Not console bashing, just saying).

But yea, I know what you mean. People take this way to seriously nowadays. Hey, who's ranks are being tracked again? Nobody's, so STFU and play for fun or don't play.

Dead Air Just kicks ass for both teams, havn't lost on it yet, still need to play death toll but yeah that is definetly the hardest until finale and even then theres a mile long trek to the radio
