hey guys, I know you can specify who to spawn as in versus mode. you could type it in autoexec and prefer to spawn as a boomer, or francis, or smoker etc. anyone knows the command?

Hm, maybe I am wrong but I swear I read about it at some place and even saw the code. It wasn't for like constant spawning but only for random instanced like when the new map is loaded and AI director chooses randomly something for you.

There used to be cvar for a preferred or desired character, though I forget what it was offhand. The lobby system uses it to set your survivor character when you begin a game from the lobby, though it's no longer usable through the console. You could at one point put it in a config, so when you use the server browser you would drop into the game as whoever you liked, assuming the character wasn't occupied by another player already.
I believe the cvar itself was removed quite some time ago however. It was present in the demo and shortly thereafter but I'm almost certain it's no longer usable, at least on the client side.
*edit* The cvar in question is team_desired. It accepts two arguments, team and character name, so you could input "survivor zoey" to prefer Zoey over other characters. I checked it in the console and it seems to be a developer/hidden cvar now. There's also a team_desired2; no idea what it does though.
I would imagine team_desired2 is some sort of second choice, if the first one can't be done :P

team_desired2 is the desired team for the optional 2nd player. (For when you run splitscreen in Xbox or PC)
I'm gonna say that an "infected_desired" cvar does not exist, although i would love to see one implemented. I'd imagine that valve removed the feature from beta versions because most players would be frustrated when they had chosen a desired infected but the director had to force them to be otherwise....
I would like it if Valve brought this option back in cvar form. This way, the method of choosing your desired infected would be hard enough that the players who know enough to set the cvar would also understand that it will guide the director's decision but not force it. Therefore, they wouldn't feel cheated or let down when the director has to spawn them as something they don't want to play as.

I'd like this to be a feature, as I have never, ever, played as a Smoker or a Tank in Versus!
one of them

LOL I was going to guess he didnt even complete one round. There aint no way you can play more than one game and not become a smoker. Depending on the number of tanks that spawn, maybe he hasnt played as a tank in 3-4 games, but thats tops.

Aint?
EDIT: Oh, nevermind!
Ain't = are not, not a substitution for is not. :P
I would like there to be a command like this, but one you can always have on in a .cfg file or something, so sooner or later you forget about it.

This might be slightly off-topic but is there a way to choose who NOT to spawn as.. say, the Tank... I don't suck at it, I just hate the Tank and I hate playing as the Tank. It is just too much pressure sometimes! lol

You could always just move out of harms way and let the rage meter empty out. That will give the tank to another person on your team, and take the pressure off of you. Careful though, because you don't always know who the tank will switch to, and if they let the timer go down, you have an AI tank to try and protect.

Wait, I think I know what this guy is talking about.
Back in the OLD OLD OLD Left 4 Dead, back when the first preview was up on the site, it was said that you choose which infected you prefer, and then spawn in. Well, it has changed. Now spawning is random for the most part. Sorry.

Humm... Even tho I'm a Finn and English isn't my native languge, I'll have to disagree.
Aren't = Are not
Isn't = Is not
Ain't = slang for both of those in some cases.
"It ain't gonna be easy"
"You ain't gonna make it"
"I ain't doin' it"
Or am I wrong?

Well, since its not actually a real word recognized in the english language, I would think you can use it for whatever purpose you want. But, apparently, the forum grammar police (DeAdLy)have struck yet again to let me know that im wrong.

so update, im using:
team_desired "survivor francis"
team_desired "infected boomer"
works 100%, unless someone else has already taken it.
good when you join random games with pubbies etc.
