View Full Version : Valve's future games??

SickDaza

I'm a big fan of valve games as most people on this forum are so does anyone know if any new valve games are on the slate for release anytime soon (in the next year or so).
Discuss any details known, if it sounds or looks any good and what your general thought about whether the game will be worthwhile buying.

EDIT: My mistake, can a mod please move this to the Games forum. Thanks.

The only thing we know about is Half Life: Episode 3, and DLC for the current games.

Valve is already loaded enough from the games they have released and the huge amount of cash that they rake in from Steam. I wouldn't be surprised if they finished Half-Life 2: Episode 3 and took a break for a while or started work on a new engine.

Companies don't just take breaks, doing nothing. I think it's very likely that they are working on a new engine right now or are at least doing some planning. After HL2:EP3 is released they will have to deliver something entirely new yet again, if they want to continue innovating.

Btw, Portal 2 is very likely. They have been searching for voice actors to record dialogue for that game a few months ago.

Ya best bet is HL:ep3 will be one of the last major titles for the source engine then valve will prob. make a new engine that can support DX10 and then make games for that the source engine is at its end.

if they DO make a new engine then i hope they make an updated version of CS, like they did when the source engine came out

one of them

If they made a new engine, you know what that means.
Upgraded CS, L4D, and TF2.

SickDaza

Well I guess I don't have much to look forward to in regards to valve games except perhaps an updated engine which would be great and a new half life ep.
It just seems strange that in 2007 they release four games and yet in '08 only one and it looks like in '09 only one again. I'm not a big wiz when it comes to developers so I don't know if this is entirely normal or what.

Valve tends to do that if u look at when HL came out they put out a lot of stuff in a short amount of time then put out less when HL2 was coming out same thing it seems like

Jesus christ, haven't you heard....

I'm waiting on HL2ep3 and Portal 2, but I'd expect they'd also focus on improvements to steam in order to better compete with Stardock's Goo and the upcoming Onlive. I'd also like to see Source move away from the bsp format, it just seems so goddamn outdated. A reliance on small corridors and large corridors painted with a skybox is a large reason many people see source as outdated.

I thought the point of episodic games was to release more in a short amount of time?

Half Life 2 - Episode 1 : June 1, 2006
Half Life 2 - Episode 2 : October 10, 2007
Half Life 2 - Episode 3 : 2009-2010?
Half Life 2 - Episode 4 : May 14, 2020

Wow, you could have at least said that is guess work. The episode 3 is probably pretty accurate but the episode 4 is WAY speculative and just silly imo.

Also, you thought correct. They were supposed to release more in a short amount of time. 3 episodes in 4 years is pretty good imo since I would say those three episodes probably have as much content as hl2 or hl.

Also, you forgot half of your comparison to even DO a comparison.

Half Life 1 : November 1998
Half Life 2 : November 2004

6 years total for both, but more release.

so its more releases in the same amount of time, MAYBE less time if episode 3 is released before nov 2010.

The HL2 Episodes have always been planned as a trilogy. The current story arc should end with EP3. What happens next might or might not involve Gordon Freeman.

And yes, the Episode 4 date/game was completely bogus. Sorry if you took that seriously.

Also guys, you do realise that the source engine has been used in:

HL 2 + episodes
TF2
L4D

All of these have different art styles... if the source engine is that ajustable then why would change ever be needed? At least in the for see able future.

Anyway, HL Ep3 and Portal 2 are in the works I believe.

eh, That might be kinda cool, but I'm not sure of my feelings for OpFor. I almost feel like saying "its not really canon!"

Anyway, I also recall hearing Valve say in an interview somewhere that they were looking into some new stuff; there was mention of MMOs and kids games: http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/52495

Yes, we realize that, but have you seen the physics problems with it?
Hunters go shooting off in random directions when you kill them.

Besides, they way source engine works is the reason on DT where we can't get onto buildings.

I don't remember the whole explanation, but they need to update it.

I don't even want that fixed XD. I once saw a hunter fly so far off the roof of the hospital that it landed on that crazy invisible ledge that's a long way off from the roof.

As funny as it is, it's still a flaw.

The reason they need a new engine, despite the different art styles is because the art styles themselves aren't anything major. Any mod can replace textures and models to make a new art style, that's essentially all L4D and TF2 are.. hl2 mods.

The engine itself is the problem, as mentioned above you can either have small corridors or large corridors textured to look like they're outside. There's no true outdoors like in Quakewars or Battlefield games.. try it and you'll be lucky if you can squeeze 20fps out of the map.

Add to that problems with physics, lack of proper dynamic lighting, heaps of missing effects which are standard in other engines and you have a dire need to come out with something new.
(foliage in source is a joke for example)

It's nice that valve has managed to keep source alive this long, but I can almost guarantee that they are working on something else.

Also, next full game to get a release? Probably the last thing to be done on the source engine will be to "combine" (lol pun) all the hl2 episodes into one game:
Half Life 2: Aftermath.

Maybe they'll release it on the hl3 engine! :D

A Valve MMO would probably be the last game I would ever want.

As funny as it is, it's still a flaw.

Every game with ragdolls (except CoD4 maybe) does this. I think it's intentional, because having dead enemies fly around is much more fun than just seeing them slump to the ground.

UKMD Elmo
05-20-2009, 10:25 AM
Yeah, the source engine has had one helluva run with plenty of good titles being released for it: HL2, all the episodes, Portal, Vampire:Bloodlines, L4D, Tf2, Counterstrike Source, and on and on and on...

I agree it is getting to the point that the once gorgeous engine is showing its age a little, but for an engine that is nearly 5 years old it still has the ability to make us gawk at the prettyness occasionaly. I think the old girl's got at least a few more years left.

EDIT: With regards to ragdolls, anyone seen the preview for the Euphoria physics system? That's the immediate future folks

I doubt Valve would make an MMO. I remember reading an article somewhere about how all MMO's nowadays will have to either have massive production budgets or cater to a smaller niche if they want to succeed because of WOW. I don't think Valve has the kind of funds to compete and I don't think they're a niche company. Moar shoosting from Valve, plox.

Or somehow find a way to reinvent the gameplay mechanics of an MMO (don't ask me how they'd do it)

My guess is that Valve will release Half Life 2: Episode 3 next, maybe along with Portal 2. Then I'm guessing that they will begin work on a new engine, because like some of you already said, the Source Engine is definitely beginning to show its age. I'm also guessing/hoping that they release a new Count Strike when the new engine comes out.

It might look like you're outside, but those skies are actually walls with pritty sky textures on them.

Well one may argue that any in game's map is set in a huge box, since all maps are built on planes with invisible walls.

It's just the size that varies.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is something like a Lost Coast 2. Maybe they are not ready to release Episode 3 this year, but still want to show a tech demo. How awesome would be a free mini-episode (one small map), that gives a glimpse of Half-Life's future?
