The Tank does not follow the pipe bomb, so he is smarter then that. Yet he can only really randomly appear and will only hit car alarms randomly and slam around. He is smart enough to see a decoy, but not enough to wait and super punch you when your healing up in the closet or crouching on the toilet making your friends laugh(Trust me it's been done before). Is it an error in the A.I., or just blind rage that drives him? Your thoughts please.

A smoker is smart enough to not go after a pipebomb, but can't control his cough.

A tank is smart enough to not go after a pipebomb, but can't control his RAEEEG.

The End.

Yeah just put in your mind the infected from 28 days later. They're not dead, just infected with such powerful rage that they'll do whatever they can to get at their target no matter distractions, getting shot etc etc. For example in the 28 days later when the main character gets attacked by that infected boy in the motorway restaurant he manages to pin it to the ground where he squirms and you can just about hear him scream 'I hate you!!!'. Tank's a bit like that I guess - Still technicaly alive but far enough away from human that he'll charge blindly at anything he sees, ignoring even pipebombs.

Indeed , the virus merely causes overriding impulses - it is not proper zombification.
Possibly the infection spread that fast early on because the infected started rather smart - not like those you encounter with their minds clouded by 2 weeks of sleep deprivation. Even then they can still figure how to use ladders and climb to reach you , and lead your moves. Their attraction to high pitched noise and boomer bile is just another symptom of infection , that is why gunshots don't have the same effect - they can get their attention but not instantly compell them to run towards the source.

And they will even jump off of a building to follow a helicopter! lmao
