So, I just got Left 4 Dead for the PC and I'm having a nagging problem. Every time I quit from the main menu I cannot open it back up again. The only way I can play again is if I restart my computer.
P.S. Sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm not very good with computers but seeing as how Left 4 Dead is now half priced on the PC I couldn't pass it up.

This happened to my on my computer once, but to all programs except Internet Explorer, etc. I don't know how to fix this, it just stopped one day. Sorry that this wasn't any help.

My PC has a habit of doing that. When it happens I just hit ctrl+alt+delete and bring up the task manager, usually it closes after that, before i have to end the process. If you exit to the menu and close the game with alt+f4 it usually works better.

The thing is, when I do ctrl+alt+delete the task manager doesn't show left 4 dead is running. I have also tried to alt+f4 out and it still won't open. Thanks for the suggestions.

It says there is another instance of it open (something to that extent). But on the task manager it does not show it open.

The problem is (and it happens with alot of source games for whatever reason) hl2.exe is still running. So open up the processes tab of task manager and look for hl2.exe. Click on it. Then click "end process". A message will then say somethin about how it might unstablilize your comp. Click ok anyways. Problem solved.

Not a problem. That warning message is just a standard windows safety net because you could crash your comp if you ended an important process. But since hl2.exe is not important for your computer's stability, it has no risk besides ending your game session should you be playing.
Lemme know if this fixes your problem :)

Update: I didn't get to try it out until this morning because I was busy helping doing yard work, so sorry for the delay. When I went to processes on the task manager there was no hl2.exe but I did see where left 4 dead was running from. Its name was something like left4dead.--- (--- = not sure). I closed it out and I could open up Left 4 Dead without restarting my computer. However every time I closed out and wanted to get back on I had to keep ending that process. While this works ok I was wondering if there was a permanet fix so I wouldn't have to end the process everytime I wanted to go back into Left 4 Dead.

This only happens to me some of the time. Not sure why it's a constant thing for you.
Try uninstalling L4D and redownloading it. In your My Games tab in Steam right click L4D and select delete local game content. After it's done, right click L4D again and select install game. Something might have downloaded incorrectly. If this doesn't work all I can think of is sending your computer build to Valve with the problem.

Right click on it and choosing "end process tree" would be a better option, it will stop everything having to do with hl2.exe. That was pretty much what I was saying I just didn't for whatever reason lol. All you really have to do is click the 'applications' tab, right click 'Left 4 Dead',and click 'go to process' then what I said above, that way is easier if the processes tab has a huge list.
