Best two tips I can think of are to go through commentary mode before playing online and to play a little as each class while in there to get a feel for them. The commentary covers most of the basics of the game and you can learn a lot of things just by seeing others do them in game.

Other tips: (bear in mind that I'm not super experienced myself.)
- Practise rocket/sticky bomb jumping offline for a little bit. It's an essential skill as a soldier (well for me it is anyway) and can be useful as a demo man. (rocket jumping up the nade hole or onto the sniper nest on 2forts is a personal favorite. lol)

- When you're a soldier go for splash damage with your rockets. That way even if you don't get a direct hit, you still do damage.

- When playing as a spy keep in mind that everyone shoots teammates to spy check, especially if they're running in the wrong direction. Also note that cloaking/de-cloaking isn't instant and that getting close to anyone while cloaked = semi-cloaked for a short time.

- When playing as an engineer, metal can be replenished from anything that usually gives ammo. (ammo boxes, supply cupboards, dropped weapons and dispensers) And always build your dispenser before your turret when you can, that way you can replenish enough metal to build/upgrade your turrret, instead of hunting for metal to upgrade the turret. (upgrading/repairing is done by hitting it with wrench, both consume metal)

- If your playing as a medic waiting for the map start counter to go down, have a soldier shoot himself while you heal. Your ubercharge will go up faster than if you healed someone who wasn't being damaged making it easy to have full uber right at the start. Also remember this as a soldier if a medic is running around healing all the soldiers.

- If the center of a turret cant see you, it wont shoot. And failing that, corner bobbing is usually a good anti-turret tactic. Both of these are considerably harder if the engi is actually watching his turret from close by. (I don't think this is classed as en exploit because the turrets sensor is in the center so it makes sense)

- As a scout you can sometimes outrun an unprotected turret and kill it with your bat. e.g: http://www.leetfish.com/other/windsorgaming/index. php?option=com_content&task=view&id=539&Itemid=1 (http://www.leetfish.com/other/windsorgaming/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=539&Itemid=1)

I probably missed a lot of stuff, but most of that should be helpfull.

EDIT: Saw a link to this on kotaku and thought it would be worth linking it here: http://www.custompc.co.uk/features/601396/the-comp lete-guide-to-team-fortress-2/page1.html (http://www.custompc.co.uk/features/601396/the-complete-guide-to-team-fortress-2/page1.html)
Looks like it covers all the basic gameplay elements like control points, the intel briefcase, sudden death, classes etc.
