I was bored so I decided to do as many others before me have done.....wirte a fictional story about a zombie apocalypse! It's probably not as great as some ohers may be, but since I've already started I would like to know good everyone on the L4D 411 forums thinks it is. No zombies in this part though. I want to try to make everything as long as possible and I wasn't writing very long. By the way I am only 14, hope no one thinks any less of me because of my age.

Prologue

Mark signed out of work, punching his card to show the time he left. He was exhausted, as the day had been unusually busy for a mall. It had seemed like everyone was in a rush to stock up on supplies, for nuclear war or something. It hadn't been this busy since Y2K. Mark had no idea why everyone was stockpiling these enormous amounts of food and equipment. He had thought for a second that maybe the people of Evergreen Heights had gone crazy, but he had also forgotten how superstitious they were. They had probably all been preparing for some disaster rumoured to occur, although just the idea of something as ludicrous as that brought a smile to his face. There was no way he would ever believe such things. Mark didn't believe in any paranormal or religious ideas or concepts because you see, Mark was a skeptic. He would need to lay eyes on god and see him perform a miracle before accepting Christianity as his religion. He also didn't believe in any superstitions, which was the opposite case for the majority of the citizens of Evergreen Heights. Then it hit him, tomorrow was All Hallows Eve, or Halloween as it is more commonly known as nowadays. The people of the town had always thought that the undead were to rise from their graves and consume the flesh of the living as they were said to have done in 1807. The people prepared as it was the two hundredth anniversary of the event, the same was done on the one hundredth anniversary. Obviously nothing had happened in 1907, but the people insisted it would happen again.

Mark pulled on his GORE-TEX Mountain Parka, while he looked out the window of the mall. It was pouring rain out and the sky was the darkest he had ever seen it. Good thing I brought my parka today, Mark thought happily. His happiness soon turned to bitterness as he ran through the nearly empty parking lot. He fumbled around in his jacket pockets, looking for his car keys. He slipped the key into the lock and turned the key. After hearing the lock click he opened the door and took refuge from the rain in his dry, yet cold, car. His breath was clearly visible and despite his jacket he was shivering. His pants and shoes were completely soaked even though it was only the mere distance of five metres from the front door to his car. Mark slipped the key into the ignition and turned the key. It started up instantly. After waiting a few minutes to let the engine warm up he turned on the heat. No longer shivering Mark put the car into drive and exited the parking lot. The streets were almost completely empty and some of the street lights had appeared to go out. He turned on his high beams and increased the speed of his windshield wipers; it was raining even harder than before. He could hear a spraying sound as he drove through one of the many puddles formed by the rain. I wouldn't want to break down out here, Mark thought as he drove down the highway.

Mark glanced at the clock which read 11:00 PM. He had left the mall later than usual as he had to help usher the customers out of the mall along with the other security guards. He signalled and then turned right as he had reached the exit leading to the outskirts of town where his house was located. His house was barely considered a part of Evergreen Heights; in fact part of his property extended past what should be the city limits. As he drove down the badly paved street he passed the houses belonging to the few others who lived this far from the centre of the city. He pulled into his long gravel driveway. He could hear his Rottweiler, Rocky, barking and the gravel crunching underneath the tires of his car. After coming to a halt and putting the car into park, Rocky jumped up to the passenger side window panting heavily. Mark opened the driver side door and locked it before closing it and having Rocky jump up. Mark patted him on the head and handed him a dog treat. He always had one ready to give to Rocky when he arrived at home. Rocky was a gentle dog which is a little unusual considering how many reports there have been of attacks by Rottweilers in Evergreen Heights. Mark walked towards his front door and was soon joined by Rocky as he had quickly finished his treat. As he reached into his pocket to grab his keys, he looked down at Rocky and smiled as he jumped up and down. After unlocking the door and hearing the tumblers turn, Mark opened the door. Rocky rushed past him and into the living room. As Mark closed and locked the door behind him he could hear Rocky settling himself down into his small bed of which he was so fond.

Mark kicked off his shoes leaving them lying astray on the floor. As he walked into the kitchen he threw his parka into the open closet where he kept various jackets, shoes, and boots. He looked around the kitchen noticing how messy it had become and made a mental note to tidy it up tomorrow. Upon opening the freezer a frozen steak fell out, the loud noise made by the hard meat hitting the floor startled both Mark and Rocky. Shaking his head and muttering curses under his breath Mark place the steak back into the freezer and pulled out a T.V. dinner. He closed the freezer door and shuffled over to the counter where he proceeded to remove the frozen dinner from the cardboard box along with the plastic wrapper covering the top. After placing the dinner into the microwave and setting the timer to five minutes he pulled out a steak knife and fork. While the dinner was defrosting in the microwave he walked over to his front door, tripping over his shoes as he went. There on the floor was a newspaper and other various articles of mail that he had received. Picking up the newspaper and the mail he walked back into kitchen, throwing his shoes into the closet as he went. Mark dropped the mail onto the counter then sat down at his kitchen table and started reading the newspaper. The front page had an article about a recent election for the mayor of Evergreen Heights, the picture showed both the candidates debating over various political issues. He quickly skimmed through the paper not seeing anything of interest. Until he came upon article elaborating on several cases of rabies that had been reported in Evergreen Height's recently. Suddenly the timer on the microwave went off, making him jump. Closing the paper and throwing it onto the table Mark walked over to the counter and opened the microwave. Taking the now steaming hot dinner out of the microwave, he shuffled back over to the table and sat down.

The dinner smelled fairly good despite its previous frozen state. He had now forgotten all about the article in the newspaper and started to eat the T.V. dinner consisting of Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, and corn. Rocky came out of the living room and into the kitchen after smelling the dinner, his nails clicking on the floor along the way. He sat down beside Mark hoping for even the tiniest scrap of food. Mark threw him a small piece of steak which he quickly devoured. He sat up hoping for more, until Mark shooed him away. Instead of trying again for more Rocky whimpered and walked back into the living room to continue his sleep which had been interrupted by the aroma of warm food. Mark finished the dinner several minutes later. It hadn't tasted as great as it had smelled, but food was food and he had been hungry. Yawning he walked off towards his room, leaving the remains of the dinner and the utensils on the table. Before entering his room he caught a glance of Rocky's nearly empty food dish. Groaning he grabbed the bag of dry dog foods and poured into the dish. Dropping the bag next to the dish he shuffled into his room. He let himself fall onto his bed and went to sleep, fully clothed. The last thing he heard before drifting of into a deep slumber was the clicking of nails.

Mark awoke with a start. Sleepily he hit the snooze button on his alarm clock. The clock read 6:00 AM. Rubbing his eyes he got out of bed and nearly tripped as he walked out his bedroom door. He glanced into the living room on his way to the kitchen. Rocky was just waking up, he yawned loudly before walking over to his food dish. Mark turned on the coffee machine and put in the ground up coffee beans and water. He then proceeded to pour himself a bowl of cereal. The coffee machine clicked away as he put a spoonful of Rice Krispies in his mouth. I have to go buy some more cereal today Mark thought, as he finished eating the cereal. He had just place the bowl on the counter and went to do the same with the steak knife when something started banging on his front door. Looking out the window he saw that it was his neighbour, Rob. He looked as if he had been attacked by a wild animal. There were many cuts and bruises covering his body. His right arm sported a particularly gruesome gash, which was dripping an unusually small amount of blood. His skin had turned a light shade of grey and his face was void of emotion. Worried, Mark rushed to the door. "What happened, Rob?" he asked as he opened the door. He had barely uttered the question when Rob rushed at him, knocking him over. Rob was now on top of Mark and was try desperately to bite and scratch him. Just barely managing to hold the creature at bay, Mark took the knife he still grasped in his hand and buried it deep into its side. It didn't even seem to notice the wound, so Mark stabbed it repeatedly. Each attack had little or no effect on the snarling creature. On the edge of death Mark started panicking. His arm gave in to the creature just as the blade plunged deep into its skull.

Hey that's pretty cool. If you put that much effort into the action sequences and the main body of the story then it could turn out pretty damned good. There were a few bits I would've changed, but all in all it's a pretty good start.
I'd like to see more.

Ghost Lead out.

EDIT:

Mark pushed the decaying corpse off of his body and sat up panting heavily. Looking over at body he could see that wound created by the knife, which was sticking out from under its chin, was not gushing, or even dripping, blood. The case was the same with the several other wounds dealt to the creature's side. This startling observation made Mark very uncomfortable. Perhaps the beliefs he had once thought to be ludicrous were actually things a man could believe in and still be considered sane. As it seemed that the dead had either risen or had been reanimated by some form of strange and rather indigenous virus. While Mark had been deep in thought he hadn't noticed Rocky run out the door which he left open foolishly. Standing up, Mark peered out the door looking for Rocky. Hearing a yelp he grabbed his gun and ran in the direction of the sound. His ex-neighbours were kneeling over what looked like Rocky. "Get off of him!" he yelled. The creatures turned around, giving Mark a view of the now mangled body of Rocky.

Standing up the creature shuffled towards him. He aimed at the middle creature and fired a shot off. The bullet impacted the body of the ghoul with a sickening thud. It didn't slow down or make any noise aside from the horrible moaning sound, which was escaping from the lips of all three of the creatures. Aiming at the middle one again, yet more carefully, he fired another shot off. This bullet hit the zombie in the forehead and exploded out the back of its skull, carrying with it bits of brain tissue.
