I'm searched for a few terms relating to this and turned up nothing, but in the planation video on ign.com ( http://pc.ign.com/dor/objects/14352245/left-4-dead-2/videos/l4d2_gmp_swamp_092109.html ) In the slot that seems to be normally reserved for pills, the player is holding medical syringe similar to an epi-pen (in short, single use needle for delivering emergancy medication.) whether it's morphine or adrenaline, who cares it acts in the same way as the pills....however I'm not sure if the effects vary or if this is just a cosmetic way to vary things you find along the way. It just occured to me that because the syringe says boost, it's more likely adrenaline or steroids, and I'll bet the affects will vary from pills, maybe even boost melee damage to coincide with the new weapons.

I'm pretty sure adrenaline is supposed to give you an extra boost, as well as make it so you do not stop every time you get hit by an infected - you just run right past them, where as pills just give you a little health boost.

On this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsgV5Qlqd-s at around 1:03 it automatically pauses and the annotations say it boosts players speed and decreases melee fatigue. And that its called adrenaline.
