LucasArts has announced it's teaming up with the KOTOR developer once again, on an undisclosed "interactive entertainment product".

I can't wait for that new Jedi Academy thing. Coolness.
EDIT: How can this game turn out bad? It's BioWare and LucasArts, they both make good games. Yay.

Looks real REAL good, I'm lookin forward for that one maybe in the story you get to kick vader's ass

Force was the third Academy, but it kinda got switched, same thing though really. The plot is like you are Vader's apprentice or something, so if you turn on him, maybe a Vader fight.

I've always wanted to kick Vader's ass with hardcore force powers. No pussy force push like the other games where your hand glows and the enemy flies back. One where your hand does glow but pushes a big ass wave of energy towards the enemy and shit

Its fun, but then gets boring. I just want a new Dark Side power where you mess with there insides and then turn them inside out. Or one where you make their eyes burn so bad that the enemy themselves scrape their own eyes out cause of how painful it is

I'm pretty sure it will, it will defenetily be good for me if they make force powers like I described. I would be so damn entertained, storm troopers running around trying to take out their helmets, then hear their screams, then when they pull ou the helmet blood just comes out and you sit there watching and saying
"Bring me joy through your pain"
Thats true darkside

Wouldnt it be better if you can force choke, then slowly twist their heads all the way around then rip their throats out. And to know that you bring Extreme Fear to all those that just HEAR your name?

No I mean gameplay wise, it looks like it resembles the movie games and not the freeform stuff like in JK series.
JKA was great fun, I didn't notice many bugs... and there was LOADS of user content. Took skill too to play, I loved duels.

October 30, 2007 - BioWare's been busy. Acquired recently by Electronic Arts and already developing a number of projects, they just announced their cooperation with LucasArts on yet another title. So far we know BioWare is busy with a Sonic RPG for Nintendo DS, Dragon Age (an MMO for PC), and as well as whatever's in the works for the future of the Mass Effect franchise, as it's intended to be a trilogy. The first Mass Effect just went gold, and is scheduled to release late next month.
Add to the list yet another MMO, something being worked on by BioWare's Austin branch. EGM speculated a while back that the MMO could be based on Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR), something that initially seems to be confirmed by the LucasArts announcement. Yet BioWare's site lists Austin's MMO and a "New Next-Gen Game" as being in development, the latter of which isn't specifically stated as the LucasArts project. Though it's not confirmed it makes sense that the LucasArts project and Austin MMO would be separate games. Otherwise, why would LucasArts feel it necessary to release a nebulous press statement that didn't tie it directly to the Austin MMO already known to be in development? To confuse the public? The more likely scenario, though it's not confirmed, is that the "New Next-Gen Game" is the announced LucasArts project, and the Austin MMO is a separate game.
When contacted, LucasArts and BioWare representatives were, as you might expect, unwilling to divulge any further details.
"We don't have any details on the story or genre to reveal right now," said a LucasArts representative, "but we look forward to talking more about the game soon." A BioWare representative added, "We don't comment on rumor or speculation and are referring everyone back to the release. We haven't announced any specifics, except to say that we are working together on a project."
So what does it mean that the LucasArts project and BioWare MMO are likely separate games? Only that it's not such an obvious lock that the announced LucasArts game is, as many hope, a KOTOR MMO. If it were, and we were still operating under the assumption that the Austin MMO and LucasArts project were separate titles, that would mean BioWare is working on two different MMOs: the Austin MMO, and the KOTOR MMO. Sound likely?
So, in the interest of stirring up the hornet's nest, let's speculate on what the LucasArts project could be!
Knights of the Old Republic III
Gamers have been asking for this one for quite some time. While KOTOR II was well enough received, there has been some sentiment in the KOTOR community that Obsidian wasn't quite up to the task of following up the original and were hoping BioWare would be tapped for the next sequel, which many considered to be a foregone conclusion.
With two projects unannounced coming out of BioWare, it's also probable that the newly announced game is the "next-gen game" listed on their site. We're guessing that if the MMO was, in fact, a LucasArts property that Lucas wouldn't have permitted such an early leak unless this is a multi-sectional PR attack to get people excited bit by bit.
Knights of the Old Republic Online
The release of Star Wars Galaxies was a disappointment. While there were plenty of people playing upon release, it was not, in general, what the Star Wars and/or gaming community was necessarily hoping for. After years of rocky production and gameplay changes, the Galaxies audience has shrunk to a dedicated few. Lucas employees have mentioned in the past that thought of another Star Wars online game had not been abandoned, though no confirmation was given aside from that passing remark.
So as not to run into problems with the current state of affairs in the Star Wars universe, the Knights of the Old Republic setting makes a perfect kind of sense. There were plenty of Jedi, both Dark, Light, and Grey back then. There was plenty of conflict in the galaxy with plenty of opportunity to explore. The universe that far back is relatively untapped which could provide a huge opportunity for world creation. There is plenty of lore with both Knights of the Old Republic and the sequel to build on and create an even richer history to one of the most successful and cherished properties in entertainment.
Indiana Jones RPG
It's also, possible, though highly unlikely given that Lucas has their own Indiana Jones game in production, that BioWare has been given the task of creating a whole new RPG system for the Indiana Jones property. With the new movie releasing next year, it's conceivable that Lucas is looking to capitalize as much as possible on the license while it's still fresh in everyone's mind. Frankly, this announcement would shock the hell out of us.
Completely New IP RPG or MMO
It's also very plausible that Lucas and BioWare have teamed up to do something entirely new. There have been some in this office to suggest that had it been a game in a big existing Lucas license that they would have been more than happy to announce the game and begin beating their chests about how great it's going to be. The game is apparently really innovative and neat-o (not their exact words) so it may, in fact, be something entirely new. I'm sure Star Wars and KOTOR fans specifically would have a good groan if it wasn't in that universe, but it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility.
Maniac Mansion MMO
Do it.
Thoughts? Speculations of your own? Share and rejoice.

The new Bioware game will be fine as long as their lovely parent company doesn't start having input!
I think one of the main reasons behind EA's purchase of Bioware is partly because of the potential deal with Lucasarts (let's face it they've cornered the market in every other film to game franchise). Lucasarts is interested because if it is an MMO, EA have a pretty good server structure to host an MMO and can buy the talent required to produce it (i'm Lucasarts weren't exactly thrilled with the player level and general Sony screw up regarding SWG).
Oh and Bioware announced recently that it was openinga studio in Austin dealing solely with deving an MMO.
All the signs point in a pretty sexy direction .................... to me!!! .............ok, I mean to KOTOR 3.

I REALLY hope. But I'd be fine with JKA2... Hope its not Indiana Jones, an MMO or a new IP.
It won't be JKA2 because thats not how they do things. The next Jedi Knight will be Force Unleashed (its hard to say for sure since the stories aren't real connected anymore. But the Jedi Knight is basically: Dark Forces, Dark Forces: Jedi Knight, Jedi Knight Outcast, Jedi Knight Academy, and presumably Force Unleashed. Anyways, I'd doubt Bioware would be in charge of this series.
I'd love Kotor3 but Bioware making an MMO (and one that isnt High Fantasy) would be exciting for me. And I'm so tired of the lack of good new IPs that I would never hope against one.
So, I'd say that its not a Jedi Knight game, not a new IP because of Mass Effect and Jade Empire (its time for a starwars), and Indiana Jones would be unlikely.

Well so far FU doesn't look anything like a JK game, and you forgot Jedi Outcast 2!
frogopus
11-02-2007, 05:55 AM
As far as I know, there is no Jedi Outcast 2. You must be thinking that because its Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast.
I'm pretty sure that in the mind of the developers, FU is the next JK game. I doubt there will be any other Jedi action game that really parallels with it, it's just focusing more on force powers and less on guns/sabers. The story is obviously not following Kyle Katarn (which they broke away from in Academy) but hopefully it will return to the more linear storyline than the mission based single player in Academy.
I really haven't looked into FU much because I don't want to get excited til later, will there be online play like the JK games?

Well as much as its going to upset KOTOR fans I do think its going to turn out to be an KOTOR MMO they are developing. All the rumors so far point to that.
I think it could turn out great though. SWG was loved at first. Great license for an MMO as everyone always wanted to live the life of a Jedi or be a Tie Fighter Pilot or Bounty Hunter. But the game just went bad due to the fact there wasn't much content at all when it came out. An then the live team made bad decisions changing game mechanics an ruined the game.
The makers of KOTOR on the otherhand know how to make a good rpg with great content. So im not as worried about that. An its a better time period for this type of game since players can do whatever without needing to worry about the continuity of the Star Wars saga. Everyone can be a Jedi or Sith if they want an it wouldn't seem out of place.
Honestly if its done well I think its the only franchise that ever has a chance of getting numbers close to WoW.
