View Full Version : New gameplay mechanic.

So I just got this idea and thought it was great to put it on here. The new gameplay mechanic would be very similar to the, "tap the button to do an action moment". You know the moments in God of War in which it says, "tap the O key to do that action". Well what if the same mechanic was applied to the spacebar or use key in L4D? A great example would be at the end of the hospital map with the zombies. You could have the Vietnam veteran find the helicopter and fix it. He should know how to fix and fly helicopters after his service as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. Meanwhile the rest of the team members could be fighting off the horde. Or get the entire team involved in the action scene. The possiblities are endless and I think it would'nt be too cliche. In fact in would fit in perfectly with the entire survival/horror scene. It could be just hold the button as well to fill up a bar.

I'd think it'd be cool to have a panic button, where the faster you tap a button the faster you do an action, like running or reloading or applying a health pack, though with the action having a higher chance of failing the quicker you slap the key.
That's just an idea of mine I don't know if you guys would think it's good, but it wouldn't necessarily just be applied to L4D.
hooray for zombies

that's... a pretty damn good idea, I would like to see this at least tried somewhere. Seems like a system that can only be proved in a "trial by fire" so to speak

Well I know that some people will try to hack it but I know TRS would prevent that. A really good scene is a scenario in which you get in a safe room. You don't just easily close the door, but rather just make it and shove your body against the door while tapping your use key. Meanwhile the zombie horde is trying to get through the door while your team frantically pushes the door. Hands could be coming out of the sides and heads reaching for survivors. Then somebody puts a chair in to hold the door shut. There are a lot of possibilities such as that scenario. The way it is now it's just to get your team in and press the use key and that's it. By adding the teamwork of tapping the keys I think it would enhance the fear and suspense of the game. If you fail the action scene, there will be consequences too. *It would be great for console gamers as well. **Oh these action scenes must me in 3rd person as well. This shows the entire team working together for one goal. Could be applied to boss zombies but idk about that one.

If you could expand it to allow ALL the characters to fix things, because I doubt all of them were in Vietnam, then it would be a reasonable idea.
I'd also like to mention that communication would be an essential for this thing, and some people would have to typing if they don't have a mic, which is hard when you are slamming the use key.

I'd personally find it extremely boring to be forced into a sedentary position next to the helicopter, mashing various keys while my allies have fun shooting zombies.

and what if you're the last one alive?
guaranteed fail
Class specific abilitys is what TRS intentionaly did not make. If there were certain things only 1 character could do it wouldn´t be the same game anymore. Every Survivor is equal; therefor everyone has the same chances of surviving.
I like the idea of action sequences but I dont know if tapping buttons like mad would be the right way to set this off.

i was going to say this to, its a good idea but unfair for the person who has to just mash keys

Basic hit the nail on the head there, no chance of having this in the game..

It would be cool if, say you get pounced by a Hunter, both players tap the use button really fast. Say there is a bar in the middle, and if u can get it filled, you knock the Hunter off. The Hunter can do the same thing to drain the bar, and if the bar is empty, the Survivor simply died. The more the bar is filled, the less damage the Survivor takes, the less it is filled, the more damage the Survivor takes. It would be better than the simple "If a hunter pounces you, you're toast unless someone's nearby." thing.

Except thats the point :P Yay for forced teamwork.
If it was Xbox only I'd say the button mashing was a good idea but I would hate to bash away at my keyboard.
I think a better mechanic would be Gears of War's quick reload stuff (havent played just read about it). That way its more timing and less how fast you can push a button.

Don't like this idea at all. If you had good reflexes nothing could kill you, and that isn't the point of the game. There are no "super-1337 loltastic survivors" who can survive on their own...

Wow, it's just a suggestion. Besides, Hunters will get the jump on survivors and already be pressing it anyway.

i dont like the hunter idea, but i like the door and helicopter ideas.
i would NOT want button mashing tho, onlly hold-down a la CSS defusal.
this would be cool, but i would hate to bash away at my keyboard.

well, i would love the idea of something like interactive cut scenes,
which is like a real 3rd person cutscene and you would have to press a certain button at a certain time. Like Resident Evil 4 and Tomb Raider Anniversary
but i dont think that it would go with the game quite smoothly

That doesn't really sound like it would go with the game quite well, it would get very repetitive.

Make it unrepetitive? There's 60 keys on my keyboard, they can come up with something.

No, I counted 18, added 27, then 12, then 20, and assumed 60 for the rest.
