if you don't want to watch the whole thing it basically says this: The story is just as unimportant as every other Mario game, but everything else is just about perfect

On the Wii no doubt, but I say its two biggest competitors will be CoD4 and Mass Effect.

Are you forgetting the wii's biggest hit, smash bros brawl. I grantee you that it will sell more copies than galaxy

Are you forgetting that Brawl is being released next year and therefore will not be a contender for this years GotY?

this year's GotY would be either bioshock or halo 3 hands down

they are the strongest competitors right now
bioshock is awesome story, one of the best effects i have ever seen, and the upgrades are creative and fun
Halo 3? it exists for xbox live the story is best left ignored
Super mario galaxy might be a strong competitor for goty we will see...
hooray for zombies

I admit to them being competition, true. But the reviews so far for Galaxy are going to be giving it a pretty strong position.

man i played halo 3 in hari's house once though, and seriously disappointed, it did not feel like a new game, just another add-on. But bioshock was awesomeness and maybe i ll check out smg later

I love Bioshock, and as strong as the atmosphere and story is with the game, the actual gameplay elements start to repeat themselves. Don't get me wrong though, its definitely one of my favorite games this year.
I'd hate to see Halo 3 rewarded simply because its an example of refining not innovating. Just like Unreal 3 is a good game, it doesn't deserve that sort of praise because its just a more polished version of its predecessor. According to critics, Mario refines (and defines) its genre.
From the critical responses (I can't speak from experience except demo play) Call of Duty 4 looks like it may have Halo 3 beat out. Even looking at a most anticipated of E3 from game informer, it was slotted at number 1, edging out Halo.
This is all just my observations from how the critics have been taking the games, since I haven't played Mario (clearly), Halo 3, and I've only played the demo for CoD4.

Maybe gears of war pc take the spot if it is as good as 360 version
Uncharted:Drake's fortune looks stunning
Ratchet and clank TOD got good ratings and fun
So... we got a lot of competition going on

Gears of war from editors and readers of gamespot. My pick would be the second or third on the list, oblivion and zelda, but I didn't play GoW (no 360). I'll be able to decide on that one now that GoW is being released to PC.
Its good that Gears of War, a new intellectual property, won last year, but I doubt that will happen again this year: Halo 3, Mario Galaxy, Call of Duty 4.... Bioshock is the only new IP that I could see having a chance at GotY anywhere.

***Spoilers***
I don't think bioshock and halo 3 can compete tbh. I loved bioshock for a good 3/4ths of the game, but the gameplay quickly loses its initial wow-factor and becomes stagnant. The story stopped being intriguing after killing ryan, and the last boss/ending were pretty disappointing. Halo 3 was just halo; it was fun, yes. But there wasn't any innovation.

Inevitably will... Nothing can match Mario in sheer sales alone, and it's quite obviously a high quality game.
Pretty much 300 except with PC, 360 and PS3(Athenians) games vs. the Wii and King Mario... sounds cool, should make a video of that.

Super Mario Galaxy is officially better than Crysis, UT3, COD4, and even Bioshock.
Let's toss Gears of War in the list of games it's better than just for fun.
you can see the average ratings of them all at www.metacritic.com (http://www.metacritic.com) for proof.
Funny that Mario is still the king of video games.
