I've been looking for a new avatar for a few mins now,on the websites I get them from they look transparent (like here:http://board.ikariam.org/index.php?page=Thread&postID=604198) but when I download them and put them as my avatar they show up with the white backround which I hate.
If you don't know what I mean, I want something like http://www.left4dead411.com/forums/member.php?u=1539
I would just use my old transparent one but I lost it :(
Thanks for the help.

Download Gimp, open the image, use the background eraser on the white portion, save as PNG (or any format that supports transparency).
:D

Yeah, PNGs are quite useful.

I can do it for someone if they need it, I have Photoshop which seems to work better. It IS really simple.

There you go. Was as simple as copying it, pasting it into photoshop, magic-wanding the white, hitting delete and saving it as a .PNG.

I remember using GIMP and having to make sure the Alpha was down. That was a pain in the arse.
But you forgot about uploading it and linking it :P

Gah, just tried it in Gimp...what a pain. It really is much easier in Photoshop.

It's easier in Photoshop, but not TOO bad in GIMP.
But no matter what, I'd take CS4 over GIMP any day.

I fucking hate GIMP. Just made an entire campaign poster in it, I felt like punching the monitor numerous times.
