So I just saw the movie, was pretty amazing. It easily blows any other sci-fi out of the water that was released this year. I'm not going to spoil anything for you, but you need to see the movie. The acting is amazing, and so is the story.
ANYTHING BEYOND THIS POINT MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS, READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.
So what did you guys think of the movie?

I went into it very skeptical, thinking it would be ok at best. Boy was I wrong.
It was fucking amazing. Go see it, because my words aren't enough.
Here's what Picard thought of it:

The Wikus (The lead character) goes through such an amazing transformation during the movie, from the pencil pushing alien hater to the savior of the aliens during the course of the movie. I thought the lead was going to be sub-par acting at the start since he was all goofy and did not really care. But it just fits later in the story, the lead actor did an amazing job, and I have to give extreme props to the CGI guys, everything CGI felt completely natural, near the end of the movie you just don't even notice the CGI, it just feels right, like it was real. I did not even care/notice that Christopher was CGI, it just felt natural near the end.
Anyone agree on this? It is just so weird that obvious CGI characters can feel so natural.

Ok I saw this morning and I LOVED IT! I think it was awesome because it had no big stars involved and it was still a geniusly put together work of art. Wikus is one of my new heroes because he is such a real person, he had strong feelings when he is mad, you could really feel that he was genuinely angry. The writing was EPIC as well they felt like it was a real story rather than a regular action movie. The Prawns were also cool characters so new rather than just, ZOMBIES, ROBOTS, BAD GUYS, EVIL GUYS, etc. etc. Plus they had such realistic movements.
To tell the truth I wouldn't mind buying a game based on this movie.

How can you ask "How can it be good" when your post implies that you haven't even seen it yet? :P
I saw it, if anything cranked, it's the opposite of what you described. The plot is a lot deeper than the trailer makes it out to be and it's a must see, IMO.

I don't like movies, or sci-fi, but I found this to be really enjoyable. It just depends on how much movie tickets cost where you are, but I definitely recommend it to anyone. Basically its just a movie that wouldn't be the same on any TV. Unless you have a TV the size of a movie screen of course.

Ah okay. But when you see it, you may think the opposite and if anything the trailer made it look bad, as it showed almost nothing of the plot except a few battles.
But if you wanna wait for Blu-ray, thats fine with me!

What did you guys think of the ending?
*SPOILERS*
I'm glad they didn't go the Hollywood ending of they fixed him or returned three years later to save Wikus either. I'm glad they left it open to the audiences opinion (like many other aspects of the film), and didn't spoon feed you the ending. You kinda got to choose if Wikus eventually changed after the ordeal, or is just waiting for Christopher to return so he can turn back.

I really liked the ending. It added a sense of sadness while at the same time hope. If he had changed back it wouldn't have left the same impact.
My dad commented that it left room for a sequel, but I really can't see that happening. Considering that this was based off a book and that there wouldn't be that much of a plot to go by.

It's actually based on the director's 2005 short film 'Alive in Joburg'. Good mini-film, it feels almost like a extended trailer for District 9.

The reason he did that was because he was in extreme anger, was not thinking rationally. And I believe his name is Vickis.

*Spoilers*
Wikus, from the start and to the end, was a selfish person. I thought that helped keep the humanity in the character. He wasn't an action hero, any heroic actions he partook in where either thrust upon him or were caused by selfish action (i.e., trying to get the fuel back so he could turn back). I to had a WTF moment at the exact moment Binge was talking about, but after realizing he was just a selfish fool untill the very end did it make sense. I don't think he smacked Christopher because "he was in extreme anger", but because he was selfish and wanted to be turned back right away.

Ok, massive bump here, but I finally got around to seeing this. It's really unique in that it belnds traditional hollywood filmmaking with documentary style filmmaking, and it does it brilliantly. Then there's the deep story and great special effects.
The special features on the DVD (particularly the deleted scenes) also give some extra insight. One of the scene tells us how they manage to travel throguh space, they cryogenically freeze themselves while they travel. The human gangs took the technology and used it to their advantage by freezing any Prawns that owe them money, then selling them to and family members.
Another scene is about the reproductive system of the Prawns. Every prawn has both male and female organs, so they reproduce asexually. It also says that they do not have an attachment to their children. Obviously this was cut not just from the movie, but from the lore. Otherwise it would contradict the relationship between Christopher and his son, for one, that there is a relationship at all, and for two, that he calls him his 'son', when in fact, Prawns have no gender at all.
CrAnKeDHigH
01-05-2010, 10:54 PM
Yeah I saw it as well a week or two ago. It really was a well directed movie. I liked the whole documentary style in the beginning and also how the style would change to make it seem as though you are watching the news broadcast like at the end when they had the final conflict. I wish I would have seen the deleted scenes, I guess I should have looked more carefully at the menu when I rented it.
There are some things that just don't make a lot of sense when you really think about it, but I guess that's just how they make movies these days. Just change logic to suit the moment at hand. All in all though it is a definite must see.

No, what I meant was this:
NO FUCKING SEQUEL AT ALL! No matter how awesome the sequel is, this is the kind of movie that benefits from leaving it open. Although a movie based around the same universe, but having nothing to do with the events of this movie would be good. That's what MW2 needed to be.

Me too, and Christopher said "I'll be back in 3 years", so that's long enough to film a movie. I would not be surprised if there was a sequel. Also I grabbed the bluray and got the God Of War 3 demo, was pretty kick ass.

Because he was pissed, and I mean really pissed, he had to let out his anger somehow, and who was the person causing his anger? Christopher. He hit him out of sheer rage. That's why he kinda panicked after he hit him, like an "Oh shit what did I do" moment. Then quickly decides to jump down to start the thing.

Okay that makes less sense then this:
Isn't it obvious? He stole the ship to go fly up to the Mothership so that he could fix himself in under 3 years.
The only reason why he said it was 3 years was because he found out about experiments being done. He needed to get reinforcements and was going to put off fixing him until then.
