A TOP footballer was in a serious condition in hospital last night after he was stabbed at a house in Bedford, believed to be where his family lives .
Calum Davenport, 26, who plays for West Ham in the Premier League, was yesterday undergoing surgery on both legs. Police said the injuries were not life-threatening.
His mother was also wounded in the incident and was being treated in hospital.
Last night police said a 26-year-old man had been arrested in Derby on suspicion of attempted murder. A man of 19 was also being questioned.
Police were called to the address in Kempston, Bedford, at 5am yesterday.
A neighbour said there had been a disturbance that had spilled out onto the street and Davenport had been stabbed in the leg “several times”. Another said: “The police would not tell us what was going on but I saw a lot of blood.”
Davenport, a central defender and former England under 21 international, started his career at Coventry and has also played on loan at Southampton and Norwich City.
He signed for West Ham in 2007 in a £3m deal but has struggled to get into the first team. He was not selected for West Ham’s first game of the season last week.
Nottingham Forest are reported to have expressed an interest in signing him.
The property in the Kempston area of Bedford where the attack occurred was yesterday cordoned off and forensic science officers were examining the scene.
The home is thought to be owned by Davenport’s family; he has a property near Bedford. A police spokeswoman said there was no evidence of a break-in and that inquiries were continuing. She appealed to the public for any further information.
