Modern Warfare 2 becomes Activivsion's most pre-ordered game ever.
The news broke after last nights earnings call from Activision Blizzard reports Kotaku.
It seems like the £54.99 GBP price tag Activision has put on Modern Warfare 2 hasn't put off gamers who are eagerly awaiting the sequel on 10 November.

Well considering its looking to be one of the best multiplayer games we've seen to date, I think it's very fairly priced. Still haven't preordered though.. haha
It's $120 here. Fucking expensive. You know I saw Wolfenstein in a game store today - it's $130. How come Activision is the ONLY one raising it's prices?

They should burn for disturbing the face value of a video game.

Well you can't blame them for making the most generic game since Halo.

At this point it barely compares to the blandness of Halo. At least I care.

Thats still no reason to raise the price so much.

That's really the only thing you can compare stuff to, Halo?
Your so generic.....

Isn't every game now days based on Halo?
Before Halo COD still had a health bar.

It will be a continuation of a franchise that has gone on for years, with many devoted fans.
Was there ever any doubt?

Well then maybe other games are bland and copy halo?
Seriously its their games they do what they want and if they copy halo then its there problem but thats what alot of people like, if you dont like it find other games to play.

Thats the problem, there are almost no good games out there that don't have regenerating health >.>
Everybody just copies Halo.

Because Halo invented that, right. And. CE had health packs, but no one really liked them. (Except for you, probably)

I would happily pay £60 for Shadow of the Colossus. This, however (even though I'm certain it will be quite fun for a while) is only worth £30 to me. It's Christmas or nothing.
Activision just seems to be getting greedier and greedier. It's just a shame that they are inevitably going to continue to get fed.
Most FPS are generic, whether they're copying Halo or not. I mean Halo isn't original either, the only thing they did differently was the regenerating health thing really.
I'm sure CoD:MW2 will be a good game to play. It won't be excellent, it won't be groundbreaking but it'll be a solid entry. Definitely a worthy buy, Hell you could do a lot worse. It's like going to see the summer blockbuster, you know it won't necessarily be a good film but it'll be an enjoyable night at the movies. As far as video games go CoD already smells like stale popcorn to me.
BUT
Activision is yet to give a solid reason as to why they're increasing prices. I have refused to buy another Activision game until this is explained. As a PC gamer I already feel like the game industry likes kicking me in the balls with all the anti-piracy shit I have to deal with. I have Microsoft Live AND EA Download Manager or whatever the fuck it's called installed on my computer to ensure that the games I legitimately bought were in fact legitimately bought. This is not to mention all the other shit that gets installed along with a computer game to ensure that I didn't pirate the game. The ironic thing is that if I DID pirate it I wouldn't have to deal with that shit.
I'll try not to rant further but really, CoD with a $20 increase, Wolfenstein with a $30 increase, Assassin's Creed with a $20, $30 or $40 increases depending on what version you get. Meanwhile the quality of these games are stagnating as the games industry reasons "why make a good game when an average game sells better?" I pay $100 per new release game, that's looking to increase thanks to Activision's groundbreaking work into being a corporate douchebag. It's an expensive hobby. But is it too much to ask that I'm not treated like a criminal and actually be given something that's above average once in a while?
Again with the ranting, I'm just going to stop writing now.

*General problem with Activision*
I think all the gamers keeping close track of the news already oppose this whole price increase. But considering that Activision wants to raise prices even further, that leaves only two questions:
1. When will the customer turn back to the big greedy publisher and say "no, this is too far, you've crossed the line"?
2. What will the consequences of this turn around be?

Tyr, I love you.

1. When will the customer turn back to the big greedy publisher and say "no, this is too far, you've crossed the line"?
2. What will the consequences of this turn around be?
Of course gamers oppose a price increase. No-one likes paying more. But look at the real reaction. CoD:MW2 is Activisions most pre-ordered game ever. Gamers saying that they don't like the increase means absolutely fucking nothing if they keep paying. Gamers will vocally oppose something while bending over so game companies can roger them up the arse. This is not a new thing.
Parents won't mind buying a slightly more expensive game for their bratty kids come Xmas and many gamers think, "eh, it's only such a very small price increase, it wouldn't hurt me too much to buy it." I keep thinking that maybe Activision is just asking, "How far can I go before my dedicated consumer base says "no more?" I mean I still want to play Modern Warfare 2, I'd still feel like buying it if I didn't suffer from this accursed moral outrage. And the fact that I'm fucking broke.
But what will the consequenses be if the consumer base does ever say "no more"? I don't know. It would probably take quite a lot for Activision to admit they were wrong and bring prices down again. What might also happen is that other big producers like EA want to try raising prices too. That's why we have to take somewhat of a stand and say, "look I'll buy your game if you sell it to me at a reasonable fucking price." We need to do that sooner rather than later because the longer we leave it the more likely it is that:
- Prices will increase further.
- Activision will be more staunch in it's decision to raise prices.
- Other Distributors will follow suit.
That would really suck.
So all those rich boys who think "meh, it's only a small increase" and all those gamers sending their parents out to buy their games for Xmas and birthdays to avoid the cost of the increase to themselves and ESPECIALLY all those dopey pricks who have already pre-ordered - hold fast. It's still a consumers market and if we want to keep it this way we have to learn when to say "fuck off" and, FAR more importantly, when to actually stick to our guns instead of eventually caving in as we usually do.

Okay, the problem I have is that they try to use fancy words for something obviously the same as something in the last game.
Heartbeat sensor is just another word for radar. Really guys?
And with WaW, they just renamed and reskinned... Just about everything! Bouncing Betties? Claymores. Bandolier? Extra magazines. If you give me an M16 for a certain price, then give me a "new" M16 with a slightly different appearance and a different name, such as "Super Effecient Bullet inserter", I don't care, it's still the same goddamn thing as the M16 you sold me not long ago.
What I'm trying to say is, it's become complete reskins for this game from the looks of it and it seems like that way is how it's gonna go up into CoD:15 Space Warfare, which will probably be priced at 760 USD, and up to 150 for your "Anti-Darkness goggles".
Wait, that's already happening. How long till they just paint the goggles white?

Then add on top of all this the fact that content will have been omitted from the game to serve as 'DLC' later down the road.
I never did get World at War, and I pretty much can't for the simple fact that in order to play most of the playlists and (the only thing that interested me) the zombie maps, I have to pay an extra £20 on top of the £30-£40 main game. That's just not a plausible purchase for what I consider to be a sub-par rehash of Modern Warfare with a different skin.
Car Manufacturer: "I've made a car without headlights but if you pay me a little more I can put the headlights in."
Consumer: "But a car is supposed to have headlights."
Car Manufacturer: "Not mine. Mine is a special car without headlights, if you want the headlights you're going to have to pay for the Deluxe Version."

Wow it looks like I started a huge rant.
BTW I actually liked the Health packs in Halo I still have no idea why they got removed >.>
Tyr is pretty much right on all this :3
Its way easier to make an average game and still get tons of money just because of the title. This is one the bigger problems especially with companies like Ubisoft that buy the title to a game and then make a horrible sequel.
Ironically I was playing COD4 SnD with my sniper friend since my last post :) I would be a ghost and bait people to his bullets. Any game can be fun with friends :o
Also isn't the price increase going to encourage more pirating? People would react with "Fuck this I'm not buying, although I could just torrent it and hope for a big enough hamachi community to play it pirated."

Where do you see the price has gone up? I see it on amazon.com pre-ordering on the 360 for the usual $60 USD. Unless you guys are talking about the pc version? Or the "special edition" versions, in which case, what kind of moron would spend the extra money for some shitty trinket that just sits on your shelf anyway? I never understood why people waste money on the stupid special edition games. I just want to play the game, not become part of some culture by collecting all kinds of knick-knacks.

PC Versions of every important game are always 50 dollars. This is because the developers do not have to pay large sums of money to SONY, Nintendo and M$.

Well, now you guys pay the same as us console players do.....
CrAnKeD, while I never use Amazon I do notice that they put up products for pre-order even before the final price has ben set. I think they're just lagging behind with updating their prices. Activision has added the price increase to console versions too.

That's OK. Om not buying MW2 anyway. I refuse to buy the same rehashed games year in and year out like all the sheep that suck on the teet of such franchises as Madden, Halo, COD.......

Fair enough eh. PC gamers aren't as fortuitous as console gamers though, we don't get as many titles so we settle for what we can get. One more reason PC gamers get shafted.

I don't think COD is rehashed the only real COD games are 1,2,4,6 and only 4 and 6 are different from 1 and 2. 5 does not count and also 3.
I dont know if i will preorder COD6 yet might get it off Ebay 2-3 weeks after it comes out to get it cheep like i did W@W(20$lol)
