I think it's because you don't have enough memory.

Oh this problem sucks! Valve has no answer! I had it, and the only thing that got rid of it was wiping my entire hard drive. Not to worry! Other people ahve fixed it by reinstalling the Game, or Steam, or new video drivers, or direct x. It seems the fix depends on the person, as I tried all that, but as I said the only thing that worked was a wipe. Good luck man, that problem sucks. Some people say it's literally 'bad' memory, i.e. RAM.

EDIT: And oh my god, what settings are you running it at?

He means as in RAM. How much RAM do you have?

Edit: ^ Posted 1 second before me. He answered your question pretty much.

Make sure you try verifying the GCF's before doing anything more drastic. (right click the game > Properties > Local Files tab > Verify Game Cache)

Valve has no answer!
You're thinking of a different problem, they have answers for this one.

the people here are also having the same issue, so its not me.

I get the same error, only mine is about 5 minutes into the game. When Alyx is talking to Dr. Kleiner & Eli Vance in the comm station, Dr. Kleiner says "I bet it's the Combine porti-porti-porti-porti-porti-porti-..." Then it crashes to the desktop giving me the good old:

HALF-LIFE2: hl.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x10978f3f" referenced memory at "0x043f3fc0". The memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program.

Happens in the same place in the story line every single time.

I've done everything I can think of as well as some of the things mentioned in this thread to find a work-around with no success. From the sound of this & many other threads, Steam is gonna have to fix this one.

GG STEAM! I'm SO freak'n glad you have my $30.00. Put it towards all of your night school degrees from DeVry.

Going by what the thread you linked to said:
I was able to get around the crash by following the crash thread in the episode 2 forum.
When you fall down into that pit, shoot the webbing without moving forward.
Then look to your right, then look down at the ground and strife left through the tunnel you normally would crash in.
Basically, you're trying to avoid looking straight down the tunnel and move forward at the same time.
Have you tried doing it without looking through the window? Like look at the floor or in the opposite direction.

Well the have answers but the answers don't help much if they just don't work :P
But most of the things you said worked for some people were on their page. :P

EDIT: Have you tried loading up a save thats just past that part? If you can't get anyone else to make one I'll play up till that point and make a save not like its far into the game.

Well they didn't work for me! No one ever suggest that I reinstall EVERYTHING, and I did, and that was the ONLY thing that worked. I am an expert on this error as I've had it at least 3 times.
