I have mixed feelings about an open beta. Kinda like TF2. The beta and the game are pretty much exactly the same. If they release a beta of L4D, it would have to be either near done, done ,or undone. If it was done...they'd just release. If it was almost done, we get like 3 months of buggy play and the giant moment of great anticipation of playing the real thing just...dies. And if it isn't done, then it could just be disappointing.

Just registered on the forums. I've been lurking for way too long.
I, too, got an email from Chet. My schedule wasn't very open, because of finals week, but I do have a good chunk of time on Tuesday, so hopefully things work out in my favor. I think it's great that the developers are keeping connected to their fan-base.

I just got the new Games for WIndows mag. You know, the one with the new info with cornfield. My hunch is that the people who go to test it out gets to play the new content. You could be playing on the new maps with new guns and boss infected. Unfortunately I don't think any of you can say anything about it due to contracts.

Valve has on several occasions described their playtesting system. And having just experienced it first hand its exactly like that. People watch you play the game, and don't really talk to you very much, take notes and then they ask you questions.
how do they want feedback if you cant tell annything?
As they have said in interviews and developer commentary, this sort first hand response from someone who is actually PLAYING the game rather than reading about it is invaluable.
There are certain things that you can't express in words that you can glean just watching someone get frustrated or have a lot of fun.

They need first hand feedback. Of course the people having played the game, told them what they (did not) like. If the devs listened to people who never played the game, they might as well have called it Dead Rising 2. Lawn mover anyone?

We gave feedback at the session. It's not feedback from the public at large after they hear of the session, but feedback from the playtesters once they finished playing (a good two hours, woo).
And they probably won't make major changes, I agree. They don't want (I'm assuming) specific things like controls, interfaces and encountered glitches discussed, as those will probably be changed/cleaned up (respectfully). by the tim eit hits shelves/steam

So did you get creeped out by Mike breathing on your neck or dev's watching you? I'm always wonder about that. I would probably be cursing at the retards and saying "you're blocking me...MOVE F**K HEAD!" Do they ever play the CS:S zombie mod too? They can get lot's of info on that.
Esgar
12-12-2007, 02:06 PM
I don't think Mike was the guy with me (I actually never caught his name....). But no, I wasn't really bothered by my, ah, "watcher" or the person I was sharing the office with. They were fun to talk to whil eI played (I was away from the others, all by my lonesome). Plus, they sat a respectful distance ( 5 or six feet) behind me.
As for CS:S, they probably od play it (I noticed lots of zombie posters around the office, lol), but this was a test for L4D itself. Encountered bugs, menu navigation, yadda yadda.

Esgar
12-12-2007, 03:38 PM
Well, it seemed to be more a matter of preference (as for getting easier). My friend was evil and deadly as a hunter, but I stank. Conversely, my best infected was the smoker (I hung three survivors total). The infected gameplay is really fun, and a stark contrast to the survivors.

Hey guys :P keep it hush hush down here at the forum. It was a fun night, but don't go telling everyone every single feature you thought was great.
Haha Esgar...i melee'ed you :D i was actually thinking of shooting you too because if i heard a yell coming from another room, then i know that you were a person rather than a bot. hahaha.
I really hope they have another play test. im down anyday. that was an exciting night.
Esgar
12-12-2007, 05:21 PM
Well, they said we could talk about general gameplay expieriences, but wanted us to keep specifics hush-hush so that's what I'm trying to keep it to (hanging people as the smoker isn't new information, for example). But I agree, we shouldn't talk about everything we saw/heard/expierienced there.
I probably wouldn't have notcied if you shot me :P. If you had, I'd quietly take my revenge with the hunting rifle, heh heh.
And I agree, I really hope that they have another beta session we can attend.

12-13-2007, 11:44 AM
Did you find the hunting rifle usefull though? Hard to keep a bead on a running zombie, especially using a scope. I'm thinking late Q1, early Q2 now. If they let you play infected then that means it's at the playable state.

whats the blood/gore effects like when u blow infecteds heads off etc, have they changed the white boney bits to a better effect?
what did the smokers tongue look like, is it nice and shineh?
did u play through any new campaigns or was it just the hospital one?
is the gui the same or are there like twaks from what weve already seen?
did u lock any doors to stop teh bastardz coming through? :O

12-13-2007, 01:53 PM
OMG guys, the gameplay was insanley fun! right outside the main building you start in, I pounced my friend(first time ever trying the hunter pounce mind you!) and I almost killed him before being knocked off. had good sucess with the smoker as well(hung someone my first play with him as well, I don't think it was a full chokeout though. As the tank, I punded someone 4 times and they died, threw a car at someone, blocked the entrance to the safepoint, then, get this, I push the car out of the way, then just as someone was shutting the door to end the round I squeeze/bash my way into the room!!!!! and procede to wound them pretty bad before being taken out! I used the hunting rifle once. and blasted a hunter.... we were in the sewers when I was watching our backs(everyone else was faced forward, and wouldn't you know it that like 8-10 infected come running from around a place I thought we'd cleared! I shot a few with my hunting rifle, seems like a 1-2 shot kill on normal infected, but I shot the hunter in the head once and he bit the dust.all in all Awesome stuff, without getting into too much detail, it felt really solid and complete. I also used the pipebomb(LOL Squerl I feel your pain about the flaming tank! someone threw a molotov at him then he ran after me! I also melee'd the tank as a survivor! lol there was a hunter hiding in a closet in the apartment and I threw my pipebomb in there with him and nuked him and some other infected. pipebomb was very powerful! think like the power of two cs:source grenades! used pretty much every gun with the exception of m-16 :( auto shotty and molotov, no finalle for us though. I also played as every playable infected. didn't see a witch, but I had an awesome time fighting hunters, being one,(think avp2's drone alien for the hunter) I wall jumped pretty well, that was hard/fun. any other questions let me know! all in all VERY VERY GOOD, best gaming expeirience I've ever had by far!

Just keep in mind guys that what we say may not acurately reflect on the final build, as our feedback may have gotten them to make changes, they may have their own plans, yadda yadda. So take our tester info with a grain of salt.
Hool: While the rifle has a scope, I don't know if it's functional. I liked the rifle myself though. It was accurate and powerful, and I generally prefer accurate weapons. But that's just me.
Shrubs: The AI was excellent in my opinion. As bboi said, he was going to shoot me to TEST if I was a bot.
Pusifer: I think that's a little too specific for TRS' tastes :P. Though I think it's okay to tell you that we did play hospital. The gore factor was good, but not overly done. I enjoyed making infected heads go "pop" with my shotgun.

I think this may not be vague enough, but assuming you'd read the preview for Boss Infected on this site, off the top of your head, did you notice anything changed, maybe not slightly, but changed on the Infected side? No need to say what, to keep it vague, but I'm curious.

Reading the preview here, there were some very minor changes from what the preview says, and what I expierienced, but nothing overly dramatic.

Thanks Esgar, Bob and Bboi for all this info,
I know it must be hard not to blurt out all that you experienced but your doing a great job.
Still hate you all of course, but it's a respectful hate ;)

What do you think might be changed because of your feedback? Also what did you find that wasn't so fun? Thanks for the reply too. *Oh yeah how was the run speed?

We gave feedback at the session. It's not feedback from the public at large after they hear of the session, but feedback from the playtesters once they finished playing (a good two hours, woo).

something that I think will be changed is they will make the AI pathing better, that was my main concern. Infected getting hung upon stuff but that's nothing new from what I've already read, Oh, as far as the hunting rifle goes, the scope IS fully functional. I don't know why they'd have a scope on it if it didn't work. Did I mention I got to meet Mike Booth!?!?!?! very cool expeirience. everyone was very professional as well. I had alot of the guys watching me while I played bc I caught on really quick. You guys are in for a real treat. All the hype is very waranted. I also asked about release, and it's still the same as it was(not releasing any info) the run speed was good, It felt like it was the right speed, let me put it to you this way, the tank can catch you in a race! melee also kills if you smack the horde in the front enough as well. Felt like 300 melee'in all of those infected horde, "Wave after wave of infected attack smashed against survivor rifle butts" Squerl hit the nail on the head as far as the weapons go, SATISFYING!

yes! i was hoping for melee kills
it seemed dumb that u could just keep bashing the hell out of the infected and they keep coming back/getting up.
thats a real positive for me

In all honesty, I don't know. They were rather cryptic to me at least. Run speed was fine. It may seem fast, but a few smoker chokes takes the run right outa you :P.
As for not fun? Hard to say. I wish infected players respawned a little faster, but the system right now makes the game very balanced, so that'll be hard to change. One idea I've toyed with is letting infected players play as regular infected until they can respawn ( thus eliminating any long bouts of watching other people play). Another thing is maybe let the Boomer self-destruct, instead of giving him a claw attack. It's a little hard to gi "boom!" when your detonation relies upon surviors making a mistake. Other than those two minor quibbles,, I really had a blast with everything.

I think the idea of player controlled infected horde is a great one! It really would elminate the boredom factor. But you DO get to spectate the game when you die as an infected boss. There were a few time where I was genuinley enjoying myself just watching, Like for example, watching an AI controlled smoker do tongue latch(mind you the person wasn't being hung, just pulled) on someone. One time, I was being choked out, and for the life of me could'nt figure out how, until I look down, and A smoker was choking me THROUGH A HAND RAIL!!!!!! I almost got choked out too! I thought I was stuck and just getting hit by someone or something, but the bastard was pinning me against a gaurdrail. I can't imagine release being to much farther off guys. The game seemed pretty polished all in all!

so, did any of u get shocked? like enough to jump and go "wow" in a crowded lit up room, and do u think playing it alone in a dark room will be scary?
also, did any of u see that ur team was done for and just ran for ur own life?
:D thanks

Punsiher: I don't know if I ever "jumped" per se, but I did have several "Oh [expletive]" moments.
At the end of hospital though, I did ditch the last survivnbg member of the team, lol. I was running for the hospital when a smoker choked me. I didn't have alot of life left, so I went down quickly. I had about 1 HP left at that point. The other survivor helped me up, and I made a beeline for the checkpoint, blasted two infected and got inside. I spun around ready to close the door when I saw something quite scary. My last teammate was backing up with a Tank attacking him. I quickly decided to leave him for dead and promptly shut the door, with him outside :P.

Squerl and I really enjoyed spectating so its good to hear other people confirm this. The games just a lot more cinematic than most games so its more fun to watch. Takes out some of the tedium of waiting for a respawn.
