View Full Version : Will there be a competitive side to L4D?
I remember that in the early interviews and articles that was written about L4D, that both Valve and Turtle Rock Studios said that they were very confident that this game would be the next big hit since Counter-Strike. or something like that.
So I was thinking, isn't one of the big reasons that CS/CS:S is so popular, because it has a competitive side to it? that it is played in all kinds of tournaments and leagues around the world and there is money to be made, prizes to win, and that's what makes the game so big?
So when I though that both valve and turtle rock said that L4D was gonna be big, I was simply wondering: will there be some sort of a competitive side to L4D? and if 'Yes', how will it look like?
Personally, I really hope there will be some sort of a competitive side to the game cause I think that would be really sweet and it would make the game more popular, in my opionion. and the more popular the game is, the more people will buy it, and the more money Turtle Rock will get ;)
But anyways, what do you guys think/wish for? :)

The competetive side is the infected want to kill the survivors and the survivors want to kill the infected :D
This game is ALL about teamwork, competetive + teamwork dont go together :P

Well obviously the Infected are trying to kill the Survivors an stop them from escaping. That's sort of competitive. Besides that though I don't know really I thought whole point was to have a game that isn't your standard FPS game. One focused on cooperation instead.
A game can survive without being competitive. I had probably played over 100 hours on each of the Resident Evil Outbreak games. I'm honestly surprised more games like this are not on the market. Cooperative shooters that is there are plenty of online rpg's.
I see what you mean there, toxicbag :P
but I don't think you fully understood my question.
I was thinking more if the game were to be played in leagues and tournaments, like CAL or CPL, surely you cant then just go survivors vs infected? there's gonna be more to it.
Perhaps like, 8 survivors insted of 4. There will be one map, and 2 grupos of survivors with 4 players in each group, and the mission is to get to the rescue chopper (in Hospital map) before the other team does.
or have like one clan first play a map. and everything they do as a team (the survivor) will be taken into account. How far the managed to get, how fast did they get there, how many infected did they kill, how much teamwork were there in the group, etc. etc... And then when they are done, another clan plays the same map and tries to beat the score of the other team.
or I dunno, but something like that...

I'd like to do that, but obviously I can't right now... :(
Due to the fact, that this game is asymetric for the teams, you would have to compare two teams of Survivers and accordingly two teams of Infected. Great thing is, the game already has an awards system, making this easy. So there should be a thriving competitive scene imo.

Counter-Strike is played by millions. Of them, only a minute fraction play competitively.
L4D most likely won't be a hit with the competitive clans, as we all know they prefer the same generic maps with the same generic content with the same generic concept ad nauseam. That's not to say there won't be casual clans.

Neither do I. If you wanna show how big your dick is by being better than everybody else, then do it in Counter-Strike.

damn guys... competitive teams would be good for the game... noones gonna force you to play in a clan... you can still do your regular ole pub with friends and whatnot while all the clan kids do their thing. i sure as hell wouldn't join a clan but if other people want to then it can only benefit the game's popularity
yes, thank you Basic. Glad to see someone who understands :)

Hasn't this been discussed a long long time ago, in a topic far far away?
Seriously.

Or MGS3... or the sensation.
Possibly, but doubtful. L4D is more of a fun game that you wouldn't see at tournaments

People (millions) still play CS, even 1.6, because they don't throw out a new copy every damn year like a company whose name I shall not mention. Has nothing to do with tournaments. GeOW has tournaments. Fighting games have tournaments. Trading card games have tournaments. And the fact gameplay can be deeply altered helps.
As for L4D being popular. Who knows. RE:O was insanely popular when it was first released, they didn't expect so many people to buy it (only had 1 server) and 20,000+ people tried getting on and getting booted for a good... week? But they lost of their consumers because of that.

online? no way!
Yes way. I should know. Me and 3 of my friends were booted every game (sometimes ingame) and had to log in on 3 just so we could log into the same "world", for a solid week.
