I am more excited for this game than L4D :O

And here's why :D

I think it's the only game that combines Diablo II, Mass Effect, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Mad Max, Indiana Jones, aliens, bandits, 750,000+ guns, high speed car chases, salt flats, giant mining tractor things, 750,00+ guns, 4 player online co-op, transferable players between games w/ friends, etc etc etc. Oh, and 750,000+ guns.

Any game that says they have over 750,00 custom weapons, instantly turns to crap in my opinion. That's TOO MANY. Seriously, if a game could pull that off and have each individual gun actually physically different, it would be a miracle. My guess for the game right now is even if a gun does 1 more or less damage than another, they count it as a different gun. I just can't take this game seriously yet. Looks good, sounds good.. but I'm not going to get my hopes up. They are shooting for the moon on this one.. just like fable did.

And Kenny, using the random weapons system they did in DIablo, 750,00+ guns is so ridiculously possible, that it can't be crap. It's simple really. It just randomizes the parts, and that makes 750,000+ combinations, i.e. that many guns. Smae w/ armor and vehicles.

Borderlands looks awesome.

Fallout 3 was interesting me very much, but Borderlands actually lets you use the weapons instead of relying on rpg-style combat. I appreciate randomly roaming around while I find and actually use my weapons. Millions of Procedurally generated weapons is also nice! (although I heard there's only 500,000 right now)

I only just found out about Left4Dead because a Borderlands site (http://borderlandsguide.com/news/borderlands-zombie-stand) was saying the two are similar.

I got interested in Borderlands because the four player co-op. It looks like the game isn't coming out until next year though so I'm psyched I found out about Left4Dead. Its got the co-op side too and the zombie setting looks awesome.

I'm guessing all you guys are interested in Left4Dead (lol) so no need to ask about that but is any of you looking at Borderlands too?

I always cheated on games and just messed around. I would pick levels to beat legitimately, but in the end there were always a few unfinished ones.

i see your point but i'm hoping that the extra's aren't merely aesthetic. like modding your vehicle to actually effect its performance would be really fun imo. also, i hope that the randomly generated areas aren't too cookie-cutter. but you're right in that eventually it has to get old but if we're lucky it will hold our attention long enough to get our money's worth and/or another game comes out that takes its place.

i'm usually helplessly optimistic about sci-fi/fps/rpg/action/sandbox/vehicular combat games (yowza, that is a tall order when you think about it). they give me nerdgasms....

This is the only game I've truly cared about since it was first announced. A true fps rpg, diablo with fps combat in a post-apocalyptic setting. Also, like Diablo it has randomly generated weapons, areas, and other things!

there's more on the gameplay in some of those information sources. A mention of competent ai, and I saw a gameplay video but it didn't show anything clever from the ai since they were all blown up to show off the weapons.

Boasting buzzwords is what happens in interviews usually, so 500,000 weapons in a shooter is their buzzword right now. They will use it in many interviews and already have in most of the ones listed.

If it didn't happen yet that doesn't mean it won't happen. Procedural generation takes very little work to accomplish great things. You don't need proof for possibilities. Also, the ideas in a game are neutral and are used as well as the developer's skill entails.

open world is a neutral idea, it still depends completely on how good the game actually is. Reviews are good.

The art design is called “Concept Style”, inspired as it is by traditional concept art. It’s a combination of hand-drawn work and magical computer tricks to give it the comic book feel

Street Fighter 4 did it. Maybe we'll see more of this "Concept Style" in the future? Comic book didn't really register when I looked at it, unless it was a RockBand Comic Book.

From what I remember there are over1 million guns or something huge like that, since you build most of your guns from scratch, like custom barrel, sights, trigger ect. You really put the gun together from scratch, and there are 5 thousand parts I think, and putting them together in random combos creates that huge gun amount that I said earlier.

Also I liked the old style better, this new one reminds me of a JRPG...

the game plays out like fallout, fable or mass effect, where you can do any mission in any order.
theres like 60-80 main story missions and over 100 side missions, i want to say like, 130 side missions or something.
but yo, thats A LOT of missions!!!
Fallout didnt have no where near that amount of missions and i put almost 80 hours in that game!!!
yea you right though, its not a MMO, its four player co-op. drop in drop out co-op I believe like left 4 dead or resident evil 5.

also about the world size, unlike fallout which give you an entire city to explore, borderlands give you the entire planet to explore.

I think the reason behind everyone seeming to suck in all of these videos (same goes for the early L4D videos) is because it is mostly the press playing, So they haven't really heard about the game or play games in general very often.

If modding tools like the GECK for Fo3 come out then it Borderlands would definately be more successful on the PC. Then again there are more console players than PC players, so measuring success by popularity is a no no. All you can do is wait for the Metacritics to do their jobs.

Its quite simple, look at the sales demographics of any game released for the consoles and the PC. The consoles almost always have more sales.

Thats why almost every mainstream game is a console game now days. The console crowd is the majority, therefore games must be appealing to said crowd. More people who buy it = more $$$.


Its also a lot easier and cheaper to get a console, therefore the average person is more likely to get a console. Getting a decent PC and being able to operate it takes a lot of work. Trust me, I just bought 2 memory sticks and found out they weren't compatible. Now found I out I have to change my motherboard because it won't allow me to use most types of memory and I can't overclock it. Getting a good PC is a pain in the ass.




ON TOPIC:


Replayability is the key to any game. Borderlands has it because of the 3 million guns :D and Co-op. While other games like COD4 have it because of the multiplayer. Fallout 3 has it because of the mods and moral system. Left 4 Dead has both multiplayer and the AI Director.

I belive Borderlands will be a decent game, not an amazing game but atleast it brings some long forgoten features like procedurally generated weapons and co-op to the RPG genre.

Take a long barrel on a shotgun and fire slugs through it. You'd be surprised how accurate it is, certainly enough to warrant using optics if you're serious about it. Lots of people hunt with scoped shotguns and use slugs.

A revolving rifle wouldn't suffer from the same downsides as a traditional revolver, per se. It could operate in a similar fashion to the Webley or Mateba "auto-revolvers". The recoil of the cartridge pushes a sliding block which cocks the hammer. That way your trigger finger isn't cocking the hammer and rotating the cylinder while you pull the trigger, like a traditional revolver design.

tl;dr - it could work.

I'm thinking this one we sold at the gunshop a few years back. Single shot 12g but the entire barrel was supressed so there was no need for a silencer. Strange looking thing.

At first I HATED the new art style, but after looking at the old screens and looking at the new screens and the new gameplay, now I love the new art style.
But compared to Rage.........this game looks ASS.

Items and characters that are usable or can be interacted with have colored outlines. If I recall weapons have a category/tier system that color-codes them when you go to pick them up too.

The black outlines aren't cel-shading really, but sort of a blend of it and comic book-esque style. I'd say it's much more comic influenced than cel-shaded but I'm not art expert. I just feel it looks more like a graphic novel than a cartoon.

I just want to remove the black outlines. They are so distracting, TF2 had very tiny black outlines on characters so they wouldn't blend in. This has it on almost everything...

Yeah I kind of feel the same way, that they focused a bit too much on the characters art-wise and their style didn't carry over to the landscape as well. Game supposedly lands in late October so here's hoping they polish it further during crunch time.

I modded my Fallout 3 so enemies take 5x more damage to the head... The stronger creatures still take 5-7 shots to the head.

We don't really know much about the headshotting in Borderlands as all the gameplay videos feature complete n00bs that don't even use the iron sight button, let alone aim for the head.

Edit: It probably wont matter as everyone is likely to have automatic weapons by the time the enemies get that hard.
