I heard that over-heating it in a towel is a temporary fix, but I'm not sure if you're looking for something more permanent.
I feel for you man. This happened to me last year but I was still under warranty. Waiting for the replacement was the longest 5 weeks of my life :(

Get it fixed, pay the fee, and therefore don't have an unuseable towel-covered Xbox.
Google it.
Towel trick does NOT work. I don't even know where that rumor came from. It might work for a few minutes, but it will eventually break.

Unless you're willing to open your xbox and try some of the more advanced fixes, this would be a better option. Do NOT try the towel trick, it will work for a while but I've heard it can have worse side effects.

Replace the x-clamps. Best solution and mod you can do for your XBox 360. That or cut the housing and install another exhaust fan on the top/side of the 360.

Another fan will only help if it's over heating. There are 4 different red warning lights that can appear:

Geeeeeez does the picture have to be that big wikipedia? We can all read.
Mine had 3 lights, but displayed the error code E72.

Uhh i've heard the towel trick works i've had a few friends try it and in about an hour it started to work. If that doesn't work then just pay the fee to get it fixed because trying to take it apart may just damage it more

The general hardware failure can most of the time be fixed by replacing the x-clamps, bros.
