Super Smash TV for the SNES is a game I still play and enjoy today. I think if the theme of the game had been zombies as opposed to a futuristic game show (set in the year 1,999!), it would have made an excellent precursor to Left 4 Dead.

For those of you unfamiliar with it, the concept is simple: it's a game show where the contestants are given a gun and then thrown into an arena where hundreds of guys with baseball bats pour out of the doors to beat you to death. You have to stave off the masses by mowing them down with your gun.

It's straightforward and very arcade-like (and was actually a great game to play in the arcade) and reminds me very much of Left 4 Dead. In the later levels, it gets insanely difficult, with mutants and robots and tanks and power-ups.

Have there been any similar games since?

I played that emulated on my computer and it was awesome. It even has 2 players.

The only similar game is robotron 64 :D

Also, there's invasion mode in ut2k4, and actually, if you find my "Killing Floor will hold you" topic, you'll see that killing floor is just like that! It's basically left 4 dead but you play on the same level and fight harder and harder waves of enemies!

Smash tv was awesome, had it on the sega mega drive! Damn that was one hard game after you beat the first boss, the furthest I ever got was the end of the 2nd level and got destroyed by that boss.

Loved that game, so simple and addictive. the bit (in smash tv) where the snake things just come pouring out of the walls and you gotta mow em down, made you feel like a badass if you got to later levels ^_^

Hope that comes out on Wii Virtual Console.

the Smash tv maps for WC3 and Starcraft were pretty sweet.
