View Full Version : Request to bring back the old blood

(hmm.. I wanted to do some research first before posting, but since I couldn't find the video I was looking for, I guess I'll just have to do this without it)

Anyways, as the title says: I would like to see the old blood-splatter-on-your-screen get back into the game.

Why?

Becuase I never saw a problem with it in the first place. Quite the contrary, when I watched those ingame videos and saw for the first time blood splatter showing up on the players screen, I was like "wow, that's awesome! :D"

But somehow, by the looks of it, I was the only one?? :(

Becuase next thing I know, I see a mob of angry people creating threads about it, going "Hey..!! >:( I don't like the blood splatter!! Take it away or I won't buy this game!! Do it, do it NOW!!! >:( "

hehe, okay that was a bit melodramatic and overexaggerated, but you get the idea... ;)

But anyways, after that. other ingame videos showed up, and this time you could clearly see that the blood splatter had been changed... :/ And at first, I was O.K. with it. I really didn't seem to care.

But after a while, when watching some videos, it suddenly struck me. "The new blood looks awful, just awful! It doesn't even look like blood at all! :("

Or Yes, but not like the fresh warm blood that would run in a persons veins. No, this new blood that gets on your screen looks more of a several weeks old, coagulated and dried up type of blood, that someone tried to clean off by simply splashing some water at it a couple of times. that's how the new blood splatter looks like.

And...... when I think about it, the old one just seemed better compared to the new one. At least the old blood looked like REAL blood...

(or so it might seem, I dunno, my memory might betray me. that's why I said I wanted to do some research first before posting. but oh well...)

That's all for me.

They had screen blood-splatter in the version I played. And it didn't look...fresh. Kind of a rust color (brown-ish red). I think they may have made the change to reinforce the "horrible zombie-like infection" theme in the game. The blood could theoretically be so polluted with viral bits that it's changed color.

u mean when the boomer throws up on u?

has that been changed?

Nah, like when you nail an infected close up with a shotgun blast.

I have no idea what you are talking about Pain, I thought they always had that. Thought it was great, and according to Esgar, they still have it.

I think the blood splatter looks great. The original blood effect looked too.... fruity for my taste.

The early blood effects were obstructing the screen a lot; too much for my taste, if I remember correctly. I think I still have some older videos, brb. ;)

edit: here we go:

This is from the PC Gamer Video Podcast from July: (shooting the Tank with a shotgun)

This is the screenshot posted by Pain (beneath this one). It has some better image quality:

This one is from gametrailers.com called "Zombie Onlaught" I think. I didn't see any blood effects bigger than those:

I like the new ones more. In the first version, there was almost a third of your screen covered, and it stayed for 3 seconds!

Got it! :D

Managed to find and download one of the early ingame videos and take a screenshot of it! :)

This is what I was talking about - the old blood-splatter:

(is it just me or does the blood-splatter in that picture remind you of the movie "300", lol :D)

I like the new one way more than the old one, it looks like they were using the old one as a placeholder anyways.

Who knows? Maybe you could choose which type of blood you want? That would be cool, and please more people.

I think I prefer the new one. I mean, you're not going to get waves of blood from shooting someone, the spatter effect is a bit more realistic (and it looks less cartoony and more gritty)

Haven't played with the new blood but the spatter effect was based on how close you were to the zombie and what have you, so your obstruction of view varies and we can't tell by a couple screenies.

Obviously the Boomers vomit is meant to blind you.

In all honesty I'm not super impressed by either effect because it doesnt make me feel like I have blood in my eyes. I feel like theres blood on my camera.

The new blood in your pictures is more realistic. The old blood looks like it's just a simplistic blurred-out texture.

Well, it isn't. it's just that Diabolic Forelle used a crappy picture that was filmed by a crappy videocamera for the old blood. and then used a very good picture, taken from a High Definition video for the new blood.

so of course the new blood splatter comes out as the winner compared to that lousy example that Forelle used of the old one :P (Oh I see what you did there Forelle, very sneaky..... ;) hehe :P)

No, but I wanna admit some things now. As I said, I didn't do the research at the time I started this thread, but now when I have, I suddenly realise the flaws in the old blood too.

The people who say that the old blood took up too much of space on your screen are absolutely 100% correct! :) the old blood DID indeed cover quite a lot of the screen with blood. And yes, when you take a real close look at the colour, it almost seems like it was ketchup, lol. Or as someone else said, "cartoonish".

But even though, there is still something about the old blood that I prefer over the new one. hmmm.... can't really put my finger on it, on what exactly it is that makes me prefer the old one....

I dunno, maybe it's the "Left 4 Dead" slogan, I dunno.... You ever noticed that in the Left 4 Dead slogan, the number "4" is laying in pile of blood, or in a big drop of blood? Maybe I just like the old blood because it looks so much closer to the type of blood used in the slogan...

heh, sounds silly doesn't it?? :P

oh well...

(P.S. don't really know if "slogan" is the right word for it, but I hope you know what I'm talking about anyways)

They should make the blood like gears of war when you're chainsawing people.

I want:
1. graphics of the new blood work
2. covers more of the screen like old blood

Or Yes, but not like the fresh warm blood that would run in a persons veins.

Technically, the veins transfer blood with deoxygenated hemoglobin to the heart in an afferent manner, the exception being the pulmonary vein, which is essentially an efferent blood vessel and is thus by definition not a vein, but rather an artery.

The problem with the larger, old splatter, is that if you gun down seven infected point-blank, your screen would end up blinded like boomer vomit.

Yes, you are right. Sorry for that. ;) I couldn't find any older direct feed videos, but your screenshot is better, so I put it into the post. ^_^

FUCK THAT. I hated that in gears of war so much. You cant see shit unless the guy happened to be standing directly infront of your shotgun. It was bad. It looked cool, but it sucked gameplay wise.
