The Blue Screen Of Death

no, not THAT kind of BSOD, hehe... :P

I was referring to the "blue screen" you get in Left 4 Dead when you are about to die. What do you guys think about it?

Do you like it? Or are you hoping it is just a placeholder and that it will get changed to something different?

Personally, I hope it is a placeholder and will get changed later on. Not that it is something wrong with it and that it causes problems ingame, no it's just that... well... it looks like... no actually, it seems to be.... it is......

..Well, let's just say I have a hard time figuring out why everything would look blue when you are about to die :P

I mean, the pounding sound of your hart is good, THAT can stay. But instead of making everything turn blue, can't you just make it like things start to get blurry and stuff? Not much of course. more like it drifts in and out in small amounts, you know? like if you where slowly about to die or pass out

That's just MY example, not the best but maybe you guys have even better ones for how it could look like if it was to be changed? :)

Is it really blue? I thought it was just black and white. But yeah, it should blur in and out. I forgot what game did that (can't name one right now). But the black and white.. they can do better, that's for sure.

Very lame. I thought it was grey? Anyway, they should have the same effect in FFOW when you're near death. (On high settings btw, I'll get an image when I get back home. It varies drastically depending on what settings you use.)

Blurring would be cool too, if FFOW didn't do it. Not so sure, it just looks really nice.

I like it, but if you would like to see something more "realistic" I imagine your view would become more black-and-white-ish and blurry like you said.
If you´re about to pass out your view becomes very limited and at the edges of your sight things start to disapear. The closer you get to the point till you pass out / die the smaller becomes your clear view untill all you can see is black and white points...and than the lights turn off.

I think (not 100% positive on this) that it actually is black and white, just the quality of the footage hasn't been good enough to distinguish.

Maybe it just the cameras being used to film the footeg, or my computer screen or even my graphic card that I use. But to me, it isn't really black & white. To me, it LOOKS LIKE black & white, BUT!... with a blue-ish tone

As I said, maybe it's just something wrong with my sight or something. Or maybe I just have an eye for detail and you guys don't ;P


I mean, things that I've noticed in this game that I love is:

A stream of smoke comes out of the barrel after you've fired your gun. Looks awesome and I love it! :D

All the weapons do indeed eject empty casings. just that in a authentic way and not like in CS and CS:S (thank god! and thank YOU - the devs!!). See, in CS and CSS the person doing the weapons thought that it would look "cool" if casings flied right across your face instead of keeping them away from your view. But this is not something that Turtle Rock Studio went for. (I'm telling you people this because I remember people talking about it and saying that the guns didn't spit out any empty casings, which just isn't true. the guns DO spit out the casings, but those people just failed to notice them flying in the bottom right corner of the screen, from the right side of the gun, not the left one like in CS)

And the hands!! :D For very long did many people want to see in CS and CS:S different/matching arms and hands depending on what team and what character you where playing. Now with Left 4 Dead, you get what you've always wished for! ;)

Legs! if you look straight down on the ground you will see your own legs! Also something that many wanted to see in CS/CS:S but that never came around :P

Bloody cloths! :D when you blow away a infected at point blank range, not only do you get bloodsplatter on your screen, but on your clothes too! :D one moment you could be looking at your arms holding the gun and they are clean. another time coming straight out from an intense firefight, and your arms will be covered in blood from the infected! ;D

that, and many other small and GREAT details that the lovely devs put in for us.. :D ;)

just haven't seen anyone taking this things up, don't know why. maybe it is like I said, I just have a great eye for details. or maybe I'm the only one that cares and appreciates the small details that the devs put in this game, I dunno.. :P but anyways, I love it! so keep the good work up! ^^


(man! sometimes I really wish I could be a beta tester for this game or something :P

All constructive criticism and then the suggestions and all the detail I have picked up so far, have all come from me just watching half-decent videos of the game. imagine how much better feedback I would give and how accurate my posts would have been if I really had played the game instead...

but oh well, I live in Sweden anyways, so what can I do.. :P)

It is very much black and white and very cinematic. One of my favorite features... you're low on health, you hear your heart pounding, and everything has gone to black and white. Very exciting stuff.

Despite what images show, everyone who has actually played the game says it comes out black and white. Is it so hard to accept that the blue appearance may have to do with recording quality or lighting or whatever else?

No, it is not that hard to believe, nor is it hard to accept.

Put I rather put my money on some &quot;physical evidence&quot; rather then &quot;empty&quot; words.

Sure, they have all played the game. But lets not forget that the mind can sometimes forget some things or even alter/change stuff that you saw or heard.

Is it really that hard to believe or accept that they MIGHT saw it in a blue-ish colour, but after a time remembered it as just a black and white or gray-ish tone?

If you look at the faces on that screenshot, you can see that the colors are way off. I asked a dev and they said that it's as everybody here has been saying, black and white.
