hey guys
so i built a computer about 6 months ago and ive been playing l4d2 since release,

however, recently my frame rate has been dropping ALOT!

i mean like ittl be fine, ill be playing (on highest settings no less) and the game will be smooth but then for like a second ittl just lag. (its not my internet trust me it did the same thing in singleplayer)

this is odd because this has never happened to me before and ive been playing l4d2 for a while now.

one thing is, before this all started happening, my friend told me to type "rate 5000" into the console.
i did that and i think thats what caused the problem.
i dont know what that command means and i dont know how to reverse it.

can someone help?

btw i dont know all my specs, but i do have a nVidia geForce GTX 280, if that helps

thanks!

I think the default is rate 25000 or rate 35000.
I doubt that is the cause of the lag though, maybe.

You could also try cl_cmdrate 101 & cl_updaterate 60 if the other cmd doesn't work (Console commands again btw)

Rate has to do with internet connection, so I highly doubt that is the problem here, but I guess try for it and see what happens.

I think you have the same problem I had.
What kind of Virus Protection do you have installed on your system? I had Nod32 and it was taking up a lot of my Paged Pool Memory. Something I can suggest you do in order to test whether you are using too much is this:

Download and extract Process Explorer (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/processesandthreads/processexplorer.mspx).
Run Process Explorer. Press CTRL + i to bring up the System Information window.
Run the game in a window.

Go to Steam's My games menu.
Right-click on Left 4 Dead 2
Select Properties > General > Set launch options.
Add -sw to the launch options.
Launch the game.

Watch the System Information > Kernel Memory (K) > Paged Physical value. If the value exceeds 150MB, you are using too much paged pool memory.

If you ARE using too much, try disabling things that use up a lot of it. Nod32 and other Virus Protection Programs use up PPM even when they're disabled, and I had to uninstall it.

EDIT: The Rate command has more to do with your Network. If you have the problem in Singleplayer then I doubt it will help.
