I'm hedging my bets with rabies type virus, rather than the magical alternative. Any virus that actually killed it's host would not be able to animate the body - muscles need blood to be effective.

That's true, but I think that a virus that spreads like a zombie virus would be more effective because the pattern of infection would be far more aggressive. A virus that just kills people is rather passive and once it has taken place in an area, so long as it's contained, the epidemic will eventually end.

I though people on this site would have read the zombiee survival guide. Slow zombies(ones that can only be killed by destroying thier brain) are really DEAD and NOT ALIVE. They will live from 3-10 years based on the climate they are in(3-Jungle, wet and corosive environments, destroys thier flesh and brains quicker, 10 or more-Underwater or in the desert, very still, thier bodys will survive longer) or, if someone decided to preserve a head, it might be more like 30 years. The fact that soldiers have always been trained to aim for the body for thier whole military carrier (exactly how do I spell that?) and most weapons that are made to kill other humans (machine guns, flachetes, grenades) there is also the posibility that the goverment will ignore the &quot;infection&quot; until the &quot;zombies&quot; will have a large &quot;army&quot; (I am using quotation marks because these words were created by us and are used by us to describe this threat) Also, there will be many rumours going around in th public that zombies are indesructable, curable, and there will inveitably be a drug that will protect you from the zombies. Although it doesn't. What also gives these zombies the advantage is that it takes around a day to fully infect a person. This means that some people that only have a some nick on thier skin (maybe on thier foot) could, trying to escape the area, catch a plane to another country, or if their symptoms were showing and doctors in thier town could not sure the infectee, they could be sent ,by air lift, to another country or town before being completely infected. These zombies also have a good sense of smell and will follow prey many miles away. Both zombies make a noise when they detact prey (us) and will alert other zombies to the area.
Fast zombiess however are really still alive, but have a extreamly contageus virus, that also makes thier mind want to destroy everything they see. Because they are STILL ALIVE they could be left to starve, and die in a couple days if quarentined, or, if the militaru really wanted to make an image of itself(and don't think they don't) they could move into the area and absolutaly ravage those sons of bitches. Also because the virus is passed on so fast, the infected would have to acually move to another location to pass it on. As they won't just travel on thier own (without a lead) and most citizens would have already been infected, it is very unlikely that they would move.

It is a possibility but i believe it will not be the dead that will roam but rather the living that has been mutated and prey on other living. I believe that a cause of a possible outbreak would be a mutation in the common cold. right now the cold seems harmless but we can never cure it as it mutates everytime it reaches new people.Think if some one tried to genetically modify and and changes it. Itll be like a common cold mixed with rabies and it will mutate in people and they would probably infect others with their virus spreading it to many people. I'm with the general consensus about zombies actually being humans that are infected versus humans that died and then came back. Whether it's a natural mutation or formerly unknown virus or governments fucking around with vials, it think it's plausible but not right now and maybe not in the 28 days later outbreak way. My friend has a theory of (in the future) nanobots replacing failing organs and eventually totally replacing all organs until we zomb around with no minds of our own.

technicly its possible...well not the whole dead people being re-animated, but the mindless beings feasting on other human flesh is. supposedly if a human came in contact with a mutated strain of rabiees it could happen. the infection would make them incredibly hostile, even towards their friends and family. (just like any animal that has rabiees). the infection would progress and the aggression levels would increase to the point where it completely takes over their mind. they will completely lose control of all thought and recognition of mankind.(if there lucky they may be able to retain some memories like in Dawn of the Dead. my theory is that say a mother became infected. possibly, the mother would retain her maternal intincts and hesitate or completely refrain from attacking her child.) after the loss of all memory all they will know is basic survival instincts, basicly the need to feed. they will attack any object that moves; animals, humans, it doesnt matter. if a non-infected human comes in conntact with infected DNA, say a bite, the rabiees would spread and infect them as well.
