This is a roleplay that is on a different forum, but I think it will do well on this forum.(I don't care if anyone knows which forum its from, but be ready for a very long quote.)
Welcome, to the Halo Universe.
The Story so far.
Jesus tits, get ready for a long read.
It's all gone to shit.
The story of Halo is well known among the UNSC, ONI Section II not bothering to suppress this morale-boosting anecdote. The stories of Spartan-117 are legends to be whispered to the humanity's future generations; everyone knows of the Spartans' exploits on the Ring worlds and at the Covenant seat of power, High Charity. But from there on out, history is a blur. What's known for sure is that the Covenant exited slipspace over Earth and its fleet, bombarding the UNSC fleet as soon as their cannons charged, shredding the remaining MAC platforms.
The UNSC began its bitter war for its home, the trio of Spartan projects were used openly, if not announced with fanfare. What paltry forces that survived the Flood-infested Delta Halo welcome the return to fighting old and understandable enemies in what they believed would be a final stand The weeks dragged on as the Covenant tried every tactic to rid the world of the biting and clawing beast called Humanity, doggedly refusing to withdraw or reconsider their campaign. That same faith hamstringed the efforts of the Covenant juggernaut, not allowing them to unleash orbital bombardment like they had thousands of times before. Where the humans lacked in technology, they made up with sheer determination as they held off wave after wave of orbital drops and endless raids.
When the final magazines ran dry, the Covenant were held at bay with rocks and bayonets. Humanity would barely number a fraction of itself compared to the worst of the times, yet never had such courage and fury been displayed against the enemy. However, there were limited amounts of UNSC troops, and countless numbers of Covenant. The UNSC would slowly begin to sacrifice their own land with nuclear fire, barely slowing the Covenant war machine. In the struggle the United Nations exhausted almost all fissile materials on Earth.
Historians record these actions as part of Operation EXODUS, the final gambit of Humanity on Earth. The North American Republic and Neo-Kolsovic Dominion combined their remaining nuclear arsenal. Blasts ripped across Prophet Truth's ship, the massive EMP shockwave bringing down its shields on the massive, five thousand meter flagship. Radioactive fallout destroyed most of Europe and Russia, but for the price came a decisive victory. SPARTAN II John-117, the Covenant ex-Arbiter, and a dozen assorted Special Forces commandos crashed into the ships hanger and handed out swift punishment. Truth's last words were drowned out by the loud staccato of machine gun fire, and then, when all seemed well...the ship vanished into slipstream, the massive white flash of light wiping out everything within a radius of the vessel. No one has heard from it since, and it is assumed that all onboard perished in a slipspace accident. Along the African landscape Marines fought with renewed vigor, morale raised by the news of the success in boarding Truth's super carrier.
After the Prophet's death, the Covenant made an enraged final and deadly push, entering the Ark in the battle to decide Humanity's fate. In the last desperate moments of Humanity on Earth, the Fleet of Exodus, commanded by Rear Admiral Miranda Keyes, performed a dangerous in-atmosphere jump using techniques stolen from the Covenant, leading sleeper ships, loaded with those that could not be berthed on the three dozen-odd remaining vessels, civilian and military. They entered slipspace; thus sealing the fate of Earth in their final act of defiance
The action had been debated since an unusual informant disclosed the specifications of the Ark, but it was never thought to enter the realm of reality. The four most frightening letters to ever be recorded in the history of Earth were finally declared: NOVA. To deny the Covenant their final prize, Admiral Hood in a final military action detonated NOVA warhead and perished with it. In a single second, a society that had developed over thousands of years completely vanished along with priceless relics from a millennial civilization. It exploded in an incandescent flame that wiped out the planet, its satellite and most of the Covenant armada.
Five Years Later
Humanity had spent almost two years in slipstream, too afraid to travel in a straight line for fear of detection and annihilation. The last fleet slipped through the cosmos, taking a jagged, roundabout path to the outer colonies. Much has happened in that time.
When humanity first defrosted to peek its head into realspace, it encountered a different world. Planets that would have been prime colonies were ignored as hazard to the survival of a race. Flickering radio signals from Covenant colonies were not only the fleet's cue to run, but also stood to mock their lack of a home.
Conflict and strife broke up what was left of the UNSC. Nations once totally united now split into factions that represented a shadow of their now lost countries. The disunity was terrible, people at each other's throats. They each went their own way with little violence, a fatal error, for together they could have stood, now they can only run.
Several ships landed on ruined colonies that were spared the relentless Covenant orbital bombardment, or even reclaimed from their obsidian fates. Small makeshift settlements are slowly beginning to spring up, though they are far from what you will call civilization. Food and water is scarce and less of a priority that anti-detection. Ammunition and weaponry is for the most part outdated, and law depends on the one with the most guns to back him. Shaky alliances have been made with different rebel groups, but trust is always and issue and tension are high. However, there is hope, and the ruined cities of Paris V and Cote d'Azure are slowly returning to life.
The reunified Covenant are not done with Humanity; fueled by the unforgivable sin of the destruction of the Ark, the Covenant has begun to take prisoners for the first time. Nobody is sure what happens to the poor few that enter a Covenant ship in chains, but they are never seen again.
Fighting the Covenant fleet is simply not an option, and engaging in combat is virtual suicide against the Covenant's now vastly superior numbers and technology.
The legendary Spartans seldom see combat, but when they do, you can be sure that the situation is desperate. Kept in cold storage between battles, their lives are a constant stream of losing battles. With the secret to the programs essentially lost, Spartans are a dying breed.
These are the darkest times for Humanity. Survival is the first concern, and there is no place for the weak in this world. And with age-old tensions arising between the Outer Colonies remnants, the fanatically genocidal Covenant, and the first release of the Flood in millennia, nobody can be sure of the future of humanity
Weakness: Untrained and untested ground troops, Improvised mechanized (Cargo lifters, ect), Mainly non-combat personnel.
