I know how exited eveyone is about Left 4 Dead but theres a few things u should all keep in mind...
1. Its been a while since we have seen any new media, which in my opinion can only mean good things. I think there has been a lot of changes/additions to what we have seen in graphics and gameplay mecanics.
2. This is the first full release from TRS so they want it to be as polished and as good as it can possibly be, basically the game could make or break them as stand alone developers so hitting the gaming market with a bang is a must.
3. The game must be in the final stages of development, if there was a release date set for june/july last year. Maybe they could of released a mediocre game but the fact that they realise how much people like it and want to continue working on it can only be a good thing.

That could also mean they've done NOTHING to the game. o.O
I woudln't care if the game was incomplete, unless its filled with bugs and stuff. It's always patchable..

I read a German game magazine (GameStar, one of the biggest of the German market) today. They've got a preview of Left 4 Dead, basically with the same Cornfield pics, PC Gamer had a while ago. The only interesting thing about it, is that they said the game would be about 90% done!
(estimated release date: Q1, of course)
edit: See scan, some posts below.

Thats good news. It means we will see L4D in stores before summer! C'mon, February release!

is that they said the game would be about 90% done
ok wait! here u have would be about 90% done...so what does that mean?
u mean at release? that would not be very fun...a 90% done game at release...jk man, i know it was probably a typo. =)
EDIT: hey wait! if the game is only 90%, it could take forever! the game has been in production for like 3 years, so if its only 90% done, then-oh, wait, if i calculated that correctly, then that last 10% should take exactly 3 months!
anyway, (back to the OP) i think that most ppl here realize that they would rather have the game fully finished, but i think when ppl say they want it out sooner, they are just saying that they wish it would be completed faster, with everything it needs...just faster than it is happening

Heh. ^^ What I meant was: "They said that the game was 90% finished." Is that the correct form of reported speech? :p
Ok, here is the scan, because I'm such a nice guy. I hope this is ok with you squerl, but I figured it would.

The text basically says: "It's certainly a good game, not sure how long it will take you occupied, though. We will see."
edit: Another scan, that just looks cool: link (http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/462/gamestarscan2bg43bh7.jpg)
free translation:
"That Left 4 Dead will be a fun game is without any doubt IMO.The question is: For how long?
Are the levels designed so that the 8 human players can use alternate routes and strategies? And how frequently will there be further game content after the release? I have my doubts that this program will keep me occupied longer than a few days. But I´m more than willing to change my mind in Q1 next year."
meh, this ugly ***** has no idea I say!

To the OP, I can't really make up my mind.
On one hand, it would be nice to have a great, bug-free game.
On the other, I would really like to play what they have, even though I have seen numerous glitches and bugs in the gameplay videos. But those are fixable, and none of them are show-stoppers. So I could get along fine knowing that those would be patched in the future.
And... I can't vote because I can't make up my mind.

Unless there's some absolutely gamebreaking bugs present, I really wouldn't mind a sooner release. My mentality is, I'd rather be occupied now, and have a product that gets continually better so I can say "Wow, that was a really great idea! I'm glad they added it!" than sit around not playing anything.

Why do we assume it can't be a great game that also comes out sooner?
TRS can always update the game via STEAM if they really wanted to.

The way I see the game's development happening, it would seem logical that progress would follow a sort of:
proof of concept -> bug squashing -> features and playtesting -> individual campaign / map development -> release
format. Obviously you might go back and change certain aspects as you move forward with the game, certain steps are revisited, etc. But as far as I'm concerned, once you get past the features and playtesting stage and have something that can be played from start to finish successfully, why not release it? Hell, we live in the age of digital distribution. Get your product out there and get some interest in it, when the people are hungry for more, release additional maps and campaigns, or additional features.

Reviews from magazines and sites etc. are usually based on the released product, and a lot of people decide whether or not to buy a game based on reviews, or at least partially. So, if they release the game finished, like it should be, they should hopefully get good reviews, hence more people care about it, and more people buy it!
This is TRS first game is it not? Like has been said before, the first game is important. They will really want to establish themselves with good games, not releasing half finished ones, whether they can update them or not.
That's my point of view on it anyway :D

Well, playing EmpiresMod with the name "Left 4 Dead - Shrub"
sure gets people talking.
One guy started saying that "L4D is gonna be a big disappointment just like ZP:S"
So I'm willing to wait. I don't want there to be any glitches that make people think less of L4D.

i dont see how ppl can actually watch gameplay footage of l4d and still say its disappointing. i mean we didnt have any footage of ZPS, so everyone was just hoping. with l4d ppl have played it and so far we havent heard any stories of ppl not liking it after playing.
also, if they released a demo now but it would come out in 09...im not sure if i would take that...possibly...lets go make a thread poll about that now

Id rather wait a few more months and have a glitch free game rather then get it now and fall through the walls everytime I move.
But im not scared,i think the game will get GREAT ratings, for lots of reasons,i dint see one guy who played the game and dint say the game wasnt awsome, and its not even done yet :D
