So I was looking at the 411 HQ Thread, and I wanted to contribute something to that level, but it seems it's a pretty much dead project now. So I want to make a new project.

A 411 Campaign.

A community project that would include various members of this forum to create a campaign.

I have some ideas for a segment, and other can do segments as well and I will add them together to create one long experience that I know with the creativity on this forum could be epic from beginning to end.

We would need mappers of course, but also texture editors (graffiti is included in this) , maybe audio editors for custom sounds, if anyone wants to make custom models for us that would be great too.

So if you want in, sign up by saying what you want to contribute!

Is this for L4D or L4D2?

Also, I might be able to do some planning, I'm not too good with Hammer but I could plan out the campaign, or at least some of it.

Well it could be for both, if it was developed for #1 it can easily run in #2 with a few tweaks. But if built for #2 the mappers would have a larger library of textures to work with, but it could not run for #1 unless they can make their own textures or replace all l4d2 textures with l4d1 textures, which could get messy. I'm leaning towards developing it for l4d1, since it would be available to more people, and be less of a headache down the road.

The only downside is that custom models might be left out, I was thinking if making a custom gun, but l4d1 forbids that. But it's not that huge of a deal, If I make it I could add that in the future for l4d2.

So consider it a 90% yes for l4d1, but hopefully the other mappers can agree, which hopefully will.

I think you should keep it short so you don't get bogged down and lose interest.

And as long as people contribute, it could be pretty long. I will have something up to show in the next week or so. But it's still in very much beta form.

EDIT: Wanted to test out a small area of my map, but it's saying I have a hole from the pointfile, and the red line goes through a solid wall... I have no idea what's going on lol.

EDIT2: Fixed it, part of the was was func_detail on accident lol. But now my water is destroyed... I think hammer hates me.

Ok, next question, anyone want to go first in the line up of maps? We have 3 mappers so far:

Platypus (i'm pretty excited to see what he can make), One, and Me. I have my level 30% planned out already, and left the start of it blank, so I can insert an entrance there just in case my level is the 2nd or 3rd in the campaign.

And does anyone else want to join in on the project?

What I would like to see is a HUGE cornfield, like BH5, but 5 times as big. It's sad that such a horror inducing moment can just be rushed through. Give the infected bushes to spawn behind, and maybe if you could pull some magic and make the survivor's outlines disappear and a thunderstorm start up overhead making voice communication difficult, I think that would add the ultimate spooky atmosphere. That is, if you can make it.

The ability to spawn in the same cornfield would be nice. I hate that you have this huge cornfield and they can't see inches in front of them, but since you can walk through the corn they can "see" you.

Well you can actually make it like that, where you can spawn in front of them, but the fog has to be thick enough for you not to be seen. So it would have to be pretty thick fog. And the whole level would have to be covered in fog, not just that single spot. I have not figured out how to make one area foggy.

If your talking about actual fog, not the particle effect, then it's easy.

You use a trigger brush and tie it to a fog_volume entity, then use an env_fog_controler to control the different types of fog.

For example, if you ONLY wanted super thick fog in the cornfield, then you cover it all with a single fog_volume entity, then set it's fog name to the name env_fog_controller, which has all the fog settings in it.

Oh, I've only used the env_fog_controller to just cover everything XD. I never really went into doing just certain areas. Thanks for the Info, I have to use that for my map I'm working on lol.

I have a lot of experience with textures, normals, vmt coding, etc. I also have all the proper tools, and can work quite fast. I can make tiled textures for maps, as well as overlays, graffiti texts, signs, all that snazzy shit.

Damn nice work Danger! I'll see if I need anything in the future. I asked Zombie Hunter to do some transparent blood textures for me. But for now I'm alright, I'm still in the planning phases.

EDIT: Also, it's been a while lol, but welcome back, It would be an honor for you to join on, you do awesome work.

I'll try to show off something soon to show some progress, I want to get something functional, or at least semi functional.

So that's just a segment, the giant tower thing is a missile silo type thing, and the box nearest the screen is a secret at the moment. And I say it's a secret since it's no where near finished yet lol.

I can draw up some plans if you give me an idea on what the campaign is going to be generally. My thought was that the players were going to be 'inside' the 411 that would allow for lots of different environments.

A room with golden doors to enter and at the top a huge 411. This room is presumed to be the location of 411 itself. You enter it and there are loads of server towers. You must turn these on so you can single 411 for help. Turning them on however, makes lots of noise and lights attracting the horde. This could be a crescendo event or finale!

I also have a question to ask you guys, how do you change the gravity of certain areas, not the whole map? I have an idea I want to do, and it requires no gravity in a section.

I must say this is looking better everyday, I hope it'll turn into an extremely awesome campaign, I don't have any experience in mapping, modelling, texturing or any kind of that, so I'm not sure I'll be able to help in anything, I'd like to, but I don't know what I could help with.

I could help plan and/or map. Experience wise I have about 5 abandoned projects and 1 that I am working on right now for a contest. The thing that I would rather not do is the nav meshes as I am not very good with those, but if I must then I will. I am kind of tied up in the World of Level Design flow contest at the moment but I could start mapping and/or planning on 5/10/10. Count me in!

Well if you want a custom weapon, it would be l4d2 exclusive, since l4d1 can't support custom weapons. I could look into it though, I would like to make one lol. Instant kill anything, but only 1 swing.

Or the escape from the finale could be crossing a troll bridge while banning all of the trolls(tanks) with your mighty ban-hammer!

What if the campaign generally worked like this:

Trolls: moderate horde event.

Spam attack: huge horde, possibly infinite until button/trigger is activated.

Angry moderator: Tank, "banning" everyone in sight.

Each map could possibly be a different section of the forum, with the idea being that you are chasing down the source of all the spam attacks, as he jumps from thread to thread. At the end finale, you have to press the report button in his lair, and then hold off the endless spam until the admin horn sounds and the pearly gates to Moderatordom open up, acting as the escape point, and the symbol that he has been IP banned and you have ascended to Moderator.

FYI the spammer would be hidden deep in Off Topic (which incidentally would be the fourth map, with the fifth being his lair).

Just throwing those ideas out there.

Best sniper! Has a 1 second reload, and only carries 45 shots, but the crossbow has the ultimate penetration power, along with 1 hit kills for anything except for the tank and which. (It does 600 damage)

I was kinda hoping of something... Original... Maybe I'll come up with something for the ban hammer, but I posted a ton of pictures on my blog of my map, you can visit it on there, the last picture in the series is a picture of a bloody mirror, I have not gotten the mirror working yet, but it will be cool once I do.

EDIT: if you didn't notice, my blog is in my sig, only reason I uploaded it there was because it has a bulk uploader, and I don't want to create links for the 20 something images.

I always wondered why a metal rod heated to melting was more effective than plasma assault rifles.


The Metal Rod isn't just heated, its a spent nuclear rod, generating immense amounts of heat and small amounts of radiation.

Plasma rifles is basically a long range tazer. It creates a burn, but doesn't penetrate through that much skin, especially when the enemies have layers of synthetic fibers on top of it. So, a penetrating, superheated, nuclear rod is more effective than a long range tazer.

I was thinking the finale is when you become a mod you have to run across a long bridge over an endless pit and press a button that Bans all of the "trolls". while you are running a few things to ensure epicness will be happening. 1 it will be continuously raining bodies (all of the banned souls) and 2 you will be chased by an assload of tanks (like 5). they wont catch up if you sprint but it should still cause an adrenaline rush. Ok, after a few days I got a rough test of what the finale should look like in my opinion.
This map is the very end of the finale (think of the BAN button as the escape vehicle). It is completely playable except that when you press the button you dont go to the credits.

You must run across a long rope bridge while being chased by 7 tanks/trolls! at the same time, it will be raining bodies (banned souls). When you get to the end you must ban all of the trolls.

Damn pred! Just when I thought the project was going to be a 1 man team effort! Thanks for proving me wrong lol! I'll check it out in a bit, it wont let me download the .nav file, guess I have to keep refreshing until it allows me...

EDIT: Just tried it out, was pretty cool, the raining ragdolls were awesome, the ban at the end was funny, though the bots got pretty stupid. It was pretty cool, but pretty easy, I can't wait to see the finished product!

yea its pretty easy at the moment. Tanks have a habit of throwing rocks into each other instead of chasing you and the mobs at the end aren't spawning anymore. Once I took out the flaming bodies the mobs came back but.. its just so epic! So I might have to spawn them with more triggers.

If you are really committed to this we need to have a set plan on how things are set up, who does what, and keep up to date with each other

we need to know:
l4d1 or 2. I prefer 2 considering how much more is possible.
How many maps will it be?
Who does what? ( for ex. you do 1 and 2 and I do 3 and 4 and someone else does the textures)

I also need your (and anyone else working on it) steam account so we can keep in touch and send map files to each other.
My steam account is zackman10122 or pred10122 (mostly on zackman10122)

I would advise sketching a top down view of your map/s before you start.

Well I was thinking make it in left 4 dead 1 first, and then it will be extremely simple to port it to l4d2 for those who play l4d2, and then l4d1 players can get in on the fun as well.

I've worked quite a bit on the 411 campaign level, but I'm going to have to put this project on halt for me, I'm working with a good friend of mine and we're making a zombie game of our own, we plan for it to be out for the pc, mac, linux, and android. It may hit the iphone and ipad, but we dont own a mac so we are unable to make anything for it. I'm also working on a personal project, but I'll release details later. I'll eventually make a post when we have some stuff to show off, right now it's just stuff testing the unity engine.

If any of you guys are still working on this, I'll keep my hand in it, but it seems like I'm the only one at the moment. I'll eventually get my part done, just not as soon as you guys hoped. I hope we can get this thing finished some day!
