I came across this idea the other day and i want to share it. I don't know if this idea has been brought up and talked about before.
Recoil based weapons. Why? Because for one, it is more realistic. Secondly, it adds more of a challenge and excitement. And lastly, it will diversify the weapons.
Now if any of you ever played any FPS shooter like CS, rainbow6, etc. You get recoil from guns. And you will notice it ranges from gun to gun. I think that if we implement this into L4D, it will immerse the players into the game more.
Cool down = Time it takes for the reticule to reach back to normal position after running or firing the gun.
Recoil = How wide the reticule expands after one shot or running.
rated out of 10 (This just a general number. I don't know the real numbers that the guns can do in game.)
Examples (Real basic numbers here, it is just to give an idea) :
Sniper Rifle - Damage = 10, Cool Down = 10, Recoil = 10.
M4 Rifle - Damage = 5, Cool Down = 5, Recoil = 5.
UZI - Damage = 3, Cool Down = 3, Recoil = 3.
Shotgun - Damage = 3-10, Cool Down = 5, Recoil = 8.
Pistol - Damage = 3, Cool Down = 2, Recoil = 1.
So there you have it. The complete (but very crude) way for me to explain my idea. I know you guys all have a very big imagination. So please take a second and visualize playing the game with the new Recoil element.
Let me know what you think.

Make an extremely difficult game.. more difficult? I think it's cool you thought it out so much.. but it really isn't needed.

I voted yes for recoil, don't know about that damage thing you said there.

i think adding chance to your aim on a game that is about co-op, fast paced, casual fun is a bad idea

No it's necessary. Certain guns have certain advantages such as the shotgun has little recoil compared to the machine gun which has a lot. Or a pistol compared to dual pistols (you have one hand on the pistol...think about it). It makes sense too. Different guns in CS have different recoil as well so it should have it in the game.

Pretty sure it has it, but you have to realize that there's only two weapons that have it, the Uzi and M16, and the rest don't fire fast enough for it to become any problem. This is different from Counter-Strike in that if you want to be a viable player at all in that game you have to use an automatic (Colt, AK, MP5, all other rifles and SMG's). Fortunately for those that don't like dealing much with spraying, shotguns will actually be useful.

Personally I think that the sniper recoil should be more around a 7.5 if you take wind resistance into consideration.

More like 7.75 in my opinion. You have to consider the Coriolis effect as well. ;)

I should restate what I meant. I think that a CS style recoil is needed - however, I don't think that recoil that makes your gun actually jump on your screen and shake is needed. There we go.

Interesting... gathering from the negative poll and the posts.
I guess everyone has their own opinions.
I sense that there are two groups of players here:
1) Fast paced shooters. Halo, Goldeneye 007 = little or no recoil on guns. Run thru the map blasting anything on site with your buddies.
2) Role play shooters. Rainbow6, counter-strike(league matches) = different guns affect the way you play. Use strategy and team work to get thru the levels since the recoil elements reduce your chance of survival by a long shot imo.
I think the original Counterstrike 1.0 featured little to no recoil in the gun system. Only until 1.3 when they added gun feedback.. and later versions when they added the reticule open/collapse.

Judging from the L4D videos. I see little to no recoil from the guns. Compared to CS. In CS, when holding down the trigger for the M4 rifle.. you will be lucky if you even get a shot off. Have you played CS before?

The definition of L4D.
Like squerl mentioned, there is a CSS like recoil system on the assault rifle and the smg so there's a time for burst firing and a time for spraying with these weapons. I believe you may even see this with the auto shottie, but the spread is so large and deadly it was hard to notice.
L4D is very fast paced, but as the difficulty gets cranked up the team generally slows way down. Don't let one detail make you think that this game is anything like a lone wolf "run and gun." I think where extreme recoil brings your team together in Rainbow6 , you'll find sheer numbers versus a limited clip size (relative to the zombies, at least) has the same effect. Left 4 Dead, however, has a wealth of additional features that really result in amazing team work, things that you haven't seen in previous cooperative shooters.
Squerl and I were both heavy into competitive CS:S at one time and we understand where you're coming from. I think you'll be satisfied with the way the guns are implemented.

You're right that the system is more forgiving than in CS:S... I don't have any experience with 1.6, so I can't say.

^^ You are correct.
There is indeed recoil and reticule open/collapse for L4D.
I never really noticed until i look closely.
BUT, it is very primitive, exactly like CS 1.0/1.3. Which isn't so bad!
Okay... So this post should now be voided.
Thanks for all your time peoples.

From 2 feet? Nah.
Hmm. don't know on what to vote on. I'm quite sure that the game already has weapon-recoil and expanding and retracting crosshairs to go with that. AND the damage-system that you pointed out too. (I think...)
However, if the question was changed to: Would you like the recoil to be even bigger? I still would have been unsure on what to vote. But it would probably lean towards the "No" answer I'm afraid of, sorry :(

I see that someone has been playing Call Of Duty 4 quite a lot, hehe, nice.. ;) *thumb up*

I certainly wouldn't vote for anything that frightens me.

Rofl, does CoD4 really talk about the Coriolis effect?

It does in one mission, though it's merely a hint at a very interesting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coriolis_effect) phenomenon.

Yes, a scripted shot, with a distance of 900m IIRC. My favourite mission. :P
