Can't Play Multiplayer

I've never got a chance to play multiplayer on l4d2 because whenever I join a game its always laggy and eventually it kicks me out. I don't know if its because of the servers people are playing on or if it's my Internet provider but can someone help. I pretty sure that it's not my internet provider because I called them serveral times and they said that my connection was fine.
