In case somebody is interested I translated the first page of the gamestar article. Iīm no native english speaker so you have to live with my misspellings and faults, nevertheless i did my best. I think its easier to translate english articles into german because the german language has too many phrases that are difficult to translate without changing the sense.
Left 4 Dead
Splattermovie on PC: Four fleshly humans flee from 4 human zombies and countless ai-undeads.
Long ago in the 60`s, everything was wonderfully relaxed, one swayed rhythmically to "free-love"-songs,
drove around in the 34 horsepower "old beetle" through the landscape and could run away from the first movie zombies
("night of the living dead" 1968) with ease.
Today, things have changed people twitch to 170 bpm (beats per minute) in strobe-lights, drive their cars with 250km via highways,
and if they come across a horde of zombies, they better get movinīfast. Times of the rather cosy, aimless shuffling braineaters are over, at least since Danny Boyles movie "28 days later".
Nevertheless Boyles undead werenīt even undead. A virus changed normal humans, as fresh as a daisy, into bloodthirsty and considering zombies, quite fast monsters.
These could have been taken by turtle rock as an archetype for their new coop-shooter Left 4 Dead. In this shooter 4 players go
up against counless, freaking fast and agile ai-zombies. If startet in versus-mode, there are additionally 4 special player controlled man-eaters waiting for you.
4 super-zombies
The common ai-monster attacks with jaws and claws only, but because of the exaggerating numbers they are nevertheless quite
dangerous, especially because they often strike from dark corners. The player controlled beasts however are coming up to you with
much more than that. The tricky hunter for example, is able to pin his prey to ground until they are freed by another player or ripped apart.
Similar thing happens by an successful attack from the so called "smoker", who lifts up the survivour with his glibbery tongue. In contrary to that the boomer spits disgusting poisonous slime that takes away the survivours view, while the tank is just extremely strong and resistant.

4 humans
Considering the varied monsters the humans look quite indigenous, in fact they use rather conventional weapons
like pistols, machineguns, shotguns and molotov-cocktails to resist against the zombies.
But the developers at turtle rock studios want to provide for plenty of diversification: Though there are at maximum 4 player controlled
monsters and the rest is affected by ai only, every session of L4D should feel different.
The program alway generates the bloodthirsty hordes at varying places. If you had to fight through a totally "zombificated" apartment,
the next time you play through this part you see absolutely nothing but desolation, while down at the street were you formerly
could go for a walk safely suddenly 30 braineaters are lurking around.
In order to not getting lost between all the "living dead" in the street canyons, one can dimly see the other survivours through walls
and edges. But only if there is enough light, in complete darkness this effect isnt visible. In that case strong flashlights help,
but they also call up more enemies.
4 Areas of fear
At release the game will come with just 4 scenarios, each with 5 maps. The goal of each Scenario is always the same:
The 4 survivours need to arrive at a certain location, where they are picked up by an helicopter for example, while the zombie-
faction tries to stop them on their way to safety.
One time the survivours have to go through urban street canyons and destroyed subway stations of a city then again they have to
fight through cornfields and homesteads or even woods.
Neat: the humans are able to clos doors behind them, so that the chasers have to open them troublesome. To keep this game
interesting the developers plan to supply the program with new free of charge content after release at regular intervals.
Because the "zombie-gaudi" (gaudi means fun maybe funny event) is made due to an appointment by valve new content will be
released via steam.
There you go^^

I don't know if you already know, but i havn't read it anywhere in this forum.
The PCGames, also a german magazine wrote in 12/07 a interesting thing about left 4 dead.
There will be no difference between german, english oder other version. in language of course, but not in things like gore.
the law in germany is very hard for games.
so my panic is that theres no blood in the final version or that there a no corpses on the ground. that would mean that this is not only in the german version, also in the others.

Yes, I read the same thing a while ago, but I just can't imagine that they will dumb down the game worldwide that way. They must be somehow mistaken. ^^

There will not be reduced gore worldwide to match german standards. Americans don't buy goreless zombie games :P

The only game i bought via steam regardless of any cuts was TF2, īcause the funny guts fit very well in the overall setting. Hope there will be serious Info if L4D is cut or not if it is I guess I have to wait until import-versions are available and canīt purchase via steam.
Generally its a setback for steam imho that they still have no age verification for germany. Well my online store will be happy though.

Just translated the editor's conclusion:
"I don't question that L4D will be fun to play. But for how long? Do the maps offer different routes for the players to choose from, are they designed to support different strategies? How often will they release new content? I doubt L4D can really hook me for more than a few days. Still I hope I TRS will prove me wrong this spring."
I wonder if she even played the game..
Everything said in the article we already knew a year ago. ;)

I get the feeling the UK is slowly going the way of Germany, about how over sensitive they are about sex and violence and swearing in the media.
Now I can kinda ( and I mean this in the loosest sense) understand why Germany is very paranoid about certain things (WWII games depicting certain iconic images ...... ya know ....... that rather embarassing political party about 70 years ago), but there is a limit.
The whole 'Think of the children.... won't someone think of the children!' mentality is just getting stupid. Message to all the do-gooders out there ..... that's what the parents are for! That's their job. If they get it wrong every so often then so be it, that's life!

I cant see the UK getting close to how 'censor happy' Germany is tbh.
If you look back at how violence, sex and swearing has been depicted in the over last few years in UK, general tolerations people have now would probably never be considered as little as 10yrs ago, it atleast should give an indication of how we change.
Common Sense +1 is all thats needed :D

Hm I think you got something wrong there, atm the censorship in germany only covers blood and violence. If some hot girl would do a gogo dance in front of some rotten corpses with blood all around, singing a hiphop song full of strong language, our censorship would turn the corpses into some fluffy animals or maybe a green meadow everything else would be "intact".
Just like with vietcong a few years ago, strong violence in the US, in germany we got no realistic violence but strong language . UK version was fully uncensored and had both.

Sucks for the german ppl,u really need blood in a zombie game, really helps creating the atmosphere of a rotten zombie city...
I could understand in the WW2 games like COD and all,but the rest is kinda shitty, replacing red blood with crappy unrealistic green blood is rediculous(not insulting the germans btw)

I cant imagine how they would cut the gore for a game like this. I mean the Boomer pukes up blood at you an explodes into bloody chunks. That's just what he does. They going to just remove him from the game? lol
It has to be a mistake no way they would censor it worldwide for the sake of one censor crazy country. If it was a german produced game maybe.
